Be it known that I, ALDEN L. PUTNAM, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ve.
hicle-Wheels, of which the following-is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to vehicle wheels of the dished disk type, and the invention consists in the construction of reinforcing means for the disk as hereinafter set forth.

In the present state of the art certain constructions of wheel of the above type have the dished disk arranged to cross the central plane or plane of impact. This adds strength and resiliency to the wheel, but as usually constructed the wheel cannot be reversed without altering the location of the tread. Again, it is usual to form such disks of a section tapering from the center toward the periphery so as to combine strength with lightness. With my improved construction the advantage of a dish crossing the central plane is retained in a construction which is reversible; and a further feature is the securing of strength and lightness in a construction dispensing with the tapering cross-section and which may be pressed from uniform gage metal.
As shown, A is the hub which is provided with an outwardly-extending flange B to which the dished disk C is secured. This disk is secured at its peripheral edge to a flange Den the rim E on one side of the central plane or plane of impact of the wheel, while the central portion of the disk crosses the plane of impact and is upon the o posite side thereof. Thus to secure the disk in proper position upon the hub the flange B is arranged at one side of the central plane of impact or adjacent to the central portion of the disk.
It is usual to secure the necessary strength in the disk by making the central portion, which is secured to the flange of the hub, of heavy gage and tapering the section from this point toward the periphery. Instead of following this construction in the present invention, the disk may be formed of uniform gage metal and the central portion thereof strengthened by a reinforcement F. Furthermore, this reinforcement is preferably oppositely dished so that its inner portion 18 arranged upon the opposite side of the central plane of impact from the corresponding portion of the disk proper, while the outer edge of the reinforcement is riveted or otherwise secured to the disk intermediate the center and the periphery. This construction has the twofold advantage of making the wheel symmetrical so that it may be reversed without change in position of the tread and also of reinforcing the construction where uniform gage .metal 1s used instead of a tapering cross-section.
The disk is secured to the hub by suit able clamping bolts or studs G passing through alined apertures in the main port1OI1 and reinforcement of the disk and engaging the flange B. There are also provided a series of driving pins H secured to and extending laterally from the flange B intermediate the clamping bolts and engaging alined apertures in the disk and reinforcement. I is aspacer or strut arranged between the disk and the member F; this being preferably an annular member of channel cross-section, the sides of the channel being respectively inside and outside of the bolts G and pins H.
Where the reversible feature of the construction is dispensed with, the clamping bolts may be permanently attached to the disk with provision for successively operating the same in clamping 0r detaching the disk from the hub. As shown in Fig. 1, the bolts G have an unthreaded shank portion passing through the disk and the spacer I and a threaded portion engaging a threaded bearing J in the flange of the wheel. As shown, these threaded hearings are formed of separate nut members having heads J seated in recesses in the rear face of the flange B and sleeve portions J extending through apertures in said flange and projecting forward therefrom to engage corresponding apertures in the member F. The bolt G has a collar K preferably formed by an interiorly threaded ring screwed upon the threaded portion of the ing between said rim andhub, an oppositely dished reinforcing disk spaced from the first mentilmed disk at the hub and secured to the main disk at a point remote from the rimv thereof, a spacer between said disks having concentric inner and outer portions, and means for securing the disk to the hub passing through apertures in said disks intermediate the concentric portions of said spacer.
2. In a vehicle wheel, the combination with a rim, a hub and a flange extending outward from said hub, of a dished disk extending between said hub and rim, an oppositely dished reinforcing disk having its peripheral edge secured to the main disk intermediate the hub and the rim, a spacer between said disks, a securing member for said disks passing through alined apertures therein and having a threaded engagement with tlie flange on said hub, and a retainer on said securing member in the space between said disks permitting longitudinal movement of the fastener in screwin independent of t e movement of the disk.
