IMPROVEMENT IN MlLL-PICKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,080, dated April 22, 1873 application filed February 8, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, E. Brown FORGY, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in MiILPicks, of which the following is a specification:
The invention consists in the improvement of picks, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a sectional side view of the pick, showing the parts which constitute my invention. Fig. 2 is a section of Fig.1 taken on the line .00 a2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the pick-head. B is the handle. 0 is the clamp. D is the pick-blade, and E is the clamping-screw by which the blade is fastened in the head. F is the projection in the interior of the head, which forms two right-angled shoulders. In the center of the pick-blade there is a recess, G, which fits onto the proiection F, as seen in Fig. 1, so that, when the blade is clamped down, it can have no longitudinal motion, but must remain fixed in the head. The clamp-plate O is curved, and is slightly raised in the middle from the center of the blade, so that there will be a slight spring when the screw is turned down. The
screw is attached to the clamp permanently,
but not rigidly. The clamp is raised and lowered by the screw, while the screw turns freely in the clamp. The screw works through the back of the head as through a nut, and is formed like a thumb-screw, so as to be turned with the thumb and finger but it may be in any other form, and to receive a wrench, if desired. I is the socket for the handle.
When the pick is constructed in this manner the blade may be easily removed, and, when in use, the blade is held rigid and immovable in the head.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent- 1. The curved clamp-plate 0, applied within the socket of head A and against the pick D, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The head A having projection D and socket I, and the curved clampplate 0 having swiveled screw E, combined with pick D G, as and for the purpose specified.
