' Fowl-metre f- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VINCENT TERRANOVA, a citizen of the United States, and a. resident of the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Folding Bed, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates tobeds adapted to be collapsed into a small space.
An object of the invention is to provide a bed frame which may be folded up into is). Small package, or opened out to form a The invention possesses other objects and features of advantage, some of which, with the foregoing, will be set forth in the following description of the preferred form of my invention which is illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the specification. It is understood that I do not limit myself to the showing made by the said drawings and description, as I may adopt variations of the preferred form within the scope of my invention as set forth in the claims.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of the bed, a portion being broken away to disclose the structure. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one-end of the bed frame. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the bed frame partially folded. Fig. 4 is a view showing the frame completely folded up.
My folding bed comprises a pair of end rails, each end rail being formed of pieces 2 and 3 pivotally connected by, a knuckle oint 4. A reach rod connects the pivot pins 6 of the knuckle joints, and consists of center piece 7 end pieces 8 and intermediate pieces 9, all knuckle-jointed together so that the reach rod is foldable as shown in Fig. 4.
After the bed frame is unfolded and set up, a fabric sheet 14, which may be of canvas or wire is stretched between the end rails. Preferably the fabric is fringed with Specification a Letters Fatent. "P t nt d u e *7, 1921. Application filed June 24, 19 20. seam-391,412; l
a number of coil springs 16 terminating in hooks adapted to be engaged through apertures 17 formed in the end rails. fabric top in place, a comfortable bed is provided, especially suitable for automobile touring and camping use. The pull of the fabric prevents the folding of the reach rod, which is curved upwardly at the ends, so that the greater portion of it lies well below the sag of the fabric top.
The end rails are preferably formed of angle section members as shown in Fig. 2 and the reach rod of channel section. If desired the frame may be formed of wood suitably reinforced at the joints by metal fittings.
To fold the bed, the top is detached and the legs are turned in, then the end rails folded together. Fig. 3 shows the device at this stage. The folded end rails inclosing the legs are then turned toward each other and inwardly, the reach rod folding about them as shown in Fig. 4. The detaching of the fabric top and the folding of the frame occupy but a moment, and thesetting up of the bed is equally simple and rapid.
I claim:
1. A folding bed comprising a pair of end rails, each end rail formed of two parts p-ivotally connected by a knuckle joint, and a reach rod formed of a pluralityof parts pivotally connected by a knuckle joint connecting said end rails and pivoted in said end rail knuckle joints.
2. A folding bed comprising a pair of end rails formed of parts lmuckle-jointed together, a reach rod formed of parts knucklej'ointed together for connecting said end rails, and braces pivoted to said reach rod and to said end rails for pivotal movement on each about two separate axes.
,3. A folding bed comprising a pair of end rails formed of parts knuckle-jointed together, a reach rod formed of parts knuckle-jointed together for connecting said end rails, and braces formed of parts knuckle-jointed together and pivoted to said reach rod and to said end rails for pivotal movement on each about separate axes.
4. A folding bed comprising a pair of end rails formed of parts knuckle-jointed together, a reach rod formed of parts knuckle-jointed together for connecting said end rails, braces formed of parts knucklejointed together and pivoted to said reach rod and to said end rails for pivotal move- With the V ment on each about separate axes, and a ing legs on said end rails, foldingbraces fabric sheet resiliently secured between sa d interposed between said end rails and sald 10 end rails. reach rod, and a fabric sheet resiliently 5. A folding bed comprising a pair of end mounted on said end rails. 5 rails formed of parts knuckle-jointed to- In testimony whereof I have hereunto set gether, a reach rod formed of parts knucklemy hand. 7
jointed together and connecting the pivot pins of said first named knuckle joints, fold- VINCENT TERRANOVA.
