COUPLING.
Specification of Letters Patent. 1
Patented June '1, 1921.
- Application filed RovemberQB, 1918. Serial No. 264,558.
. new and useful Improvements in Couplings;
and I do hereby declare that the followin is a full, clear, and exact description thereo My invention relates to new and useful improvements in coupling devices, particularly those forms which are for uniting the sections of piping or cylindrical bars and the like.
In the construction of sanitary cow stalls and similar constructions and in the formation of knock down pens of various kinds, it has usually been necessary to employ coulings cast from malleable iron or steel. uch couplings are usually internally screw threaded to receive the threaded ends of the pipe sections and are therefore not adjustable to any great degree. They are also prone to crack when any considerable amount of strain is placed on the same. A further objection to their use is their expensiveness.
The idea of the resent invention is to overcome these disa vantages by providing a simply constructed, yet very stron coupling made from a single piece 0 sheet metal. In carrying out the invention a metal blank is stamped into shape by suitable machinery, and after this formation the bars or piping which is to be connected thereb is adjustably secured in place by suitab e fastening elements.
With these general objects in'view the invention resides in the novel formation and arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawing and hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
In the drawing: c
Figure 1 represents a side elevational view of a T coupling constructed in accordance with my invention and having a pair of pipe sections secured together thereby.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the parts shown in F g. 1, one of said pipe sections being in cross section.
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1, and I F ig'. 4 is a detail plan view of the sheet metal blank from which the coupling is formed.
Referring more p rticula y to the draw- ..Figs. 2 and 4-.
ing wherein similar reference characters inviews the numerals 1 and 2 designate respectlvely a palr of pipe sections which are to be held by a coupling formed froni the blank 3 shown in Fi 4. It will be noted that this blank is su stantially rectangular in plan now, although if desired, itsoppo s1te corners may be cut away as shown at 4',in
To form the coupling the blank 3 is first bent upon itself midway its ends, as shown at 5, and the consequent arms 6 thus procured are bent lon itudinally into substantially semi-cylindrical sha e with the concave sides toward each ot er. This curvature of the arms 6 is continued from their free ends to points spaced from the .bend 5 as at 7.
The portions of the blank adjacent the bend 5 and between said bend and the points 7 are bent into substantially transversely cylindrical shape to thereby form a sleeve '8. This sleeve is adapted to slidably receive the sectlon of piping 2, whereas the socket 9, formed by the curved arms 6, receives the section of piping 1. The section 1 is adapted to be ri 'dly secured in the socket 9, while the ot er section is permitted sliding movement in the sleeve, or the sleeve is allowed to slide on the same, depending upon whether the section 2 is stationary or movable, to permit adjustment of one or the other.
- The means for holding the sleeve 8 and the section'v2-in adjustable positions relative to each other is procured by a set bolt 10, the
shank of which is screw threaded to engage similar threads in a bushing 11 which is disposed in a circular opening 12 in the sleeve 8. This bushing is held against rotation by an annular flange 13 that extends from one end and is curved to conform to the curvature of the bend 5, as most clearly shown'in Fig. 3. Thus upon inner movement of the set bolt 10 its inward end is brou ht into engagement with the section 2 and ites into the same to hold the members against relative movement.
The section 1 is held in the socket 9 and .the arms 6 which comprise the socket are secured against spreading apart by a bolt 14 which extends transversely therethrough and is provided with a nut 15. When this bolt is once in position the section 1 and dicate like parts throughout the several coupling are held against movement relative to each other inasmuch as it is not necessary to frequently adjust these two parts From the foregoing descriptlon 1t 15 0 vious that a very simply constructed T coupling has been produced from a single rectangular piece of sheet metal whlch will have a great many advantages over the ordinary cast coupling of similar shape. Although the coupling shown n the drawing has the axis of the socket 9 dlsposed at right angles to that of the sleeve 8, it is obvious that these two parts may be dls osed at other an les without departing rom the objects or the gresent invention as defined in the appende claim.
I claim: 7
A coupling of the class described formed from a single piece of sheet metal bent upon itself, the portion of the piece adJacent the bend being transversely substantially cyl ndrical to receive a section of cylindrical p 1ping, the free end portions of the plece belng longitudinall substantially semi-cylindrical with their concave sides toward each other to provide a socket for the reception of the end of a second section of cylindri cal piping, said cylindrical portion of the iece havlng an aperture, a bushing extendlng through said aperture and loosely mounted therein, a flange on the inner end of said bushing between the cylindrical portion and said section of 'cylindrical piplng,
said flange being curved to conform to the curvature of the latter to prevent rotation of the same, a set bolt adjustable in said bushing and movable toward and into engagement with the first mentioned section of cylindrical piping, and means for holding the free end portions of the piece against spreading apart. 7
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin.
