PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH S. THOMPSON, OF MILL VALLEY, CALIFORNIA.
ELECTRIC-CIRCUIT-BREAKIIN'G SWITCH.
Specificationof Letters Patent.
Patented June it, 1921.
Application filed September 29, 1920. Serial No. 413,557.
T all 720m it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosnrH S. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mill Valley, in the county of Marin and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electric-Circuit- Breaking Switches, of which the following pin (3) is a specification. 7
My invention relates to switches for handling high voltage electric current and my object is first, to secure a simple automatic overload release circuit breaking switch for outdoor installation, and second, to arrange the tripping mechanism of this switch so that it is supported solely on'the line insulators necessary to support the contact and blade portions-of the switch.
I attain these. ob 'ects by' the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure I is a side elevation of a single pole switch complete, Fig. II is a view of the switch in the open position, and Fig. III is a partly sectional view of the tripping coil,
latch, plunger and contact.
Similar. letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In my design 1 is a metal base, 2is aiixed projecting pin, 3 is a pin so mounted on the base (1). as to permit a rocking motion to be imparted to it by the shaft 4,Ithe pro jecting pin of the base (1) and rocking supporting the insulator 5 and 5'. On the insulator (5) is supported by suitable means a projecting member or plunger face, 6, which may be of insulating material, and a contact member 7. If convenience required. the contact and other portions supported on insulator (5) could be made up in one piece. Supported on insulator (5) is a plunger chamber 8, in which is carried the plunger 9, and the plunger spring 10, supporting acontact 11,- a coil housing-12, and the coil 18, mounted in such position over the plunger (9) that by means of a latch 14, it can release the plunger permitting the spring (10) to force the plunger out andpushing the rocker unit supported on pin (3) outward, gravity completing the travel of the unit to the point where a suitablestop '15, checks its movement, thus opening the switch. It will be seen that by extending I the shaft (4) and mounting other units on it, a multipolar switch can be made, and that the releasing of any one of the tripping latches will accomplish the opening of all the poles of the switch. A suitable handle 16, mounted on the shaft (at) can be operated to close the switch, the projecting member (6) pressing back the plunger it is engaged by the latch (14). It will also be seen that the trippingmechanism of this switch is mounted on the line in sulatoi's used to support the blade and contact, which insulators can be similar to those used throughout'the rest-of the line, and that it does not require insulated rods or extra insulators for conveying the tripping movement, a
What I claim is:
1. In an electric switch, a plunger engag- 9) until ing face and a switch blade on a rocker insulator, and acontact-.clip,a spring actuated plunger, a releasing latch and actuating series coil on a fixed insulator, the rocker insulator plunger face capable of being open ated to force back the plunger into a latched position and the plunger capable of forcing away the rocker insulator plunger face, and with'it the switch blade upon the release, through a predetermined flow or .current through the series coil, of the plunger releasing latch.
a 2. In an electric switch, a plunger-engag v mg face of insulating material, and a switch blade on a rocker insulator and a contact clip, a spring actuated plunger, a releasing latch and actuating series coil on a fixed insulator, the rocker insulator plunger face capable of being operated to force back the plunger into a latched position and the plunger capable of'forcin'g away the rocker insulator plunger face, and with it the switch blade upon the release,.through a predetermined flow of current through the series coil, of the plunger releasing latch.
In witness whereof, I havehereunto set my hand this Q Othday of September, 1920.
' JOSEPH S. THOMPSON.
