To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. PIERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at W'aterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stop Devices for Wire-Drawing or Similar Machines, of which the following is a speclfication, reference being had therein to the accompanyin drawings. 7
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for wire drawing or similar machines that will sto the rotation of the wire block whether t e same be actuated deliberately or by reason of the operator, the coil of wire or other object becoming entangled and drawn against it.
It is the object of this invention, among other things, to provide a mechanism for this purpose that will be certain in its operation and that will insure the stopping of the block When the operator desires to dis continue such operation or when by reason of accident or inadvertence the wire coil is dislodged or drawn toward the machine or the operator or any other person should by accident be drawn into the machine or should fall against it.
To these, and other ends, my invention consists in the stop device for wire drawing or similar machines, having certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate like parts in the several figures;
Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of one form of bench, to which my improved mechanism may be applied;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof; and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view showing some of the details of the mechanism that are associated with and actuated by my invention.
I have adopted for illustrating my invention a type of wiredrawing machine or bench that is shown in Letters Patent, N 0.
1,025,421, dated May 7, 1912, in which the block and the means for operating it are therein generally disclosed. In the structure the numeral 10 designates the table, supported upon suitable legs 11, that are connected by the front and back angle plates 12 and 13, 14 is the main driving shaft which is rotating continuously in the journal boxes 15 connected with the legs 11, 16 is the block shaft rotatably mounted in the cap 17 of the journal box 15 and havin a beveled gear 18 thereon, the teeth of whlch mesh into those of a pinion l9 fixed on the shaft 14. The wire block 20 has a make and break connection with the shaft 16, one form of connection mechanism for accompllshmg this purpose being shown in the patent above referred to. Said make and break connection mechanism is operated through a collar 21 slidably mounted upon the shaft 16 and connected with the aforesald mechanism through a pintle 22, the lever 23 pivoted to a fixed part by the pintle 24 and normally held in its up position by asprlng 25. A foot treadle 26 is pivoted to a fixed part at 27 and near its outer end passes throu h an opening 28 in the front plate 29 an connected with the lever 23 through the turn-buckle connection 30. The outer end of the foot treadle 26 is provided with a foot pad 31 for convenience in manlpulatlng it by foot pressure and mounted thereon is a latch 32 which cooperates with a notch 33 in the front plate 29 to hold said lever in a partially depressed position.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings the lever is shlpwn by full lines in its up position, that is, w en the make and break connection between block 20 and shaft 16 permits the] shaft 16 to rotate while the block 20'may remain stationary or be rotated by manual manipulation if desired, and by dotted lines in its down position, that is the relative osition occupied by it when the connect1on with the block shaft 16 and block 20 is such that the latter rotates with said shaft. This latter is known as the drawing position, at which time the treadle 26 is held under the shoulder 34 by the spring 35 pulling upwardly.
A. brake mechanism designated by the numeral 36 to retard the rotation of the block 20 is also operated from this treadle through the turn-buckle connection 37 having connection with the bell crank 38. A partial operation of the treadle 26, so that the latch 32 engages the notch 33, releases slightly the brake pressure upon the block mechanism suflioient to permit the same to be manipulated manually.
The mechanism above described constitutes no part of my present invention and is only shown and described to illustrate the general construction and operation of one form of wire drawing machine to which my invention may be applied, the subject matter of the details thereof being more or less set forth in my co-pending application for Letters Patent designated bythe Serial No. 282,399.
The numeral 39 designates the die holder which is pivotally connected at 40 to a swivel block 41 having a pivotal connection with a block 42 by means of the pintle 43. The outer end of the die holder terminates in the usual hook 44, against which is the die 45 held in place by the hand screw 46.
In operation, when the treadle 26 is in engagement with the shoulder 34 the wire block 20 is connected with and rotated by the block shaft 16, at which time wire is being drawn through the dies 45 by the block 20. To separate the block 20 from the block shaft 16 so that the latter may continueto rotate without imparting movement to the block and to actuate the brake mechanism, the treadle 26 will be, disengaged from the shoulder 34 and the same is drawn upwardly by the sprin 35. My improved mechanism is designe to provide means for disengaging this treadle from the shoulder so that the results above indicated may be obtained. This mechanism comprises a rod 47 journaled in the bearings 48 mounted on fixed parts, arms 49 mounted on said rod 47 and connected by a rod 50, a lever 51fixed on the rod 47 bell crank lever 52 mounted on the stud 53 in the front plate 29, a turn buckle connection 54 between the levers 51 and 52, and a screw 55 threaded through one arm of the lever 52, the end of which engages one side of the treadle 26. The spring 56 holds the rod 50 in its outermost position, this being determined by the stop screw 57 threaded in the table 10 and engaging the outer end of the lever 51. By reason of the turn-buckle connection 54 between the levers 51 and 52, the relative position of the parts may be varied. That portion of the rod 47 between the bearing 48 may be omitted if desired. If the rod 50, which it will be noted, may be operated at any point along the length of the machine is pushed toward the table 10, either by accident or design, the lever 52 will oscillate upon the stud 53 and the end of the screw 55 will push the treadle bar 26 away from the shoulder 34, which then moves up vertically in the slot 28 by the action of the spring 35 and the rotation of the block is stopped and the brake mechanism is applied to facilitate this stopping operation. As soon as the pressure is released from the rod 50 it will return to its normal outermost position by the action of the spring 56.
There are minor changes and alterations that canbe made within my invention, aside from those herein suggested, and I would therefore have it understoodthat I donot limit myself "to the exact construction herein shown and described, but claim all that falls fairly within the spirit and scope of the ap ended claims.

In a machine of the character described, the combination with a rotary shaft; of a block having a make and break connection therewith; a brake mechanism for retarding the rotation of said block; lever means for initiating the action of said connection; a member extending substantially the length of said machine; and an operative connection between said member and said lever means whereby the movement of the former I will actuate the latter and initiate the stoppin of said block and the action of said bra ing mechanism.
6. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a rotary shaft; of a block having a make and break connection therewith; lever means for initiating the action of said connection; a member movable in the path of said lever means when in one of its positions to release it therefrom; a member extending substantially the length of said machine; and an operative connection between said two members whereby movement of the latter will be transmitted to the former and through it to said lever means.
7. In a machine of the character described, the combination with the block; of means for rotating the same, a rock member extending along one side of the machine, and an operative connection between said rock member and the means for rotating the block.
8. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a rotary shaft; of a action of connection; means for holding said lever means in position to maintain a constant connection between said shaft and block; a trip lever mounted so as to disengage said lever from its holding means when actuated in one direction; a member extending along the front of said machine; and an operative connection between said member and trip lever, whereby movement thereof in one direction will, through said trip lever, break the connection between said shaft and block.
