JOHN A. OLBON, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY, AS$IGNOR TO AUTO SAFETY DEVICE COMPANY, 013 'UNIOiV, NE'W JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
ROCKING-CHAIR.
inseam.
Application filed October 28, 1919, Serial No. 334,664. Renewed November 3, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jon A. OLBoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rocking- Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in rocking chairs.
An important obj ect of the invention is to provide a rocking chair of the swivel type adapted for use in hotel lobbies and the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide such a chair, simple in construction and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent throughout the following description.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein like numerals designate like parts throughout,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a chair embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4: is a plan view of the chair base, and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detailed view showing the arrangement of the springs.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings the numeral 10 designates an annular plate provided upon its under side with lugs 01' casters 11, spacing the same from the floor. The plate 10 may be secured against shifting by means of screws 13 passing through outstanding lugs 12, formed upon plate 10. These lugs 12, it will be noted, do not contact thefioor but are spaced from the floor. Plate 10 is provided with bracing arms 14: extending inwardly toward the center and provided at the center with an opening 15.
Slidably mounted upon the uppersurface of plate 10 is a second annular plate 16 having a depending flange 17 which engages the peripheral edge of the plate 1.0. The plate 10 is provided with inwardly extending arms 18 having a central opening 19 adapted to co-act with the opening 16, the arms 14, to receive bolt 20. It will be obvious that the plate 16 is rotatable upon the plate 10, but is held against removal therefrom.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 31, 1921.
Serial No. 421,597.
Plate 16 is provided with additional bracing arms 21 extending from the junction of the arms 18 and secured to the upper surface of the plate.
Slightly forward of a line taken through the center, the plate 16 is provided with inwardly extending portions 24 having openings 25 forwardly therein. The chalr 26 is provided with rockers 27 adapted to rest upon the upper surface of the plate 16. Each of these rockers has secured to the inner face thereof as at 28, a bracket 29 having a horizontal flange 30 provided with openings 31. Extending intermediate the flanges 30 and the inwardly extending portions 2 of the plate 16 are tension springs 82 having their inner ends secured within the openings 31 of the flange 30 and their lower ends secured within the openings 25 of the inwardly extending portions 24.
It is to be noted that two of the springs are provided upon each side and that one of these springs approximately alines with the center and the other one is situated forwardly thereof. As clearly shown in Fig. 1 the chair 25 when in normal position has its rockers contacting at a point alined with the center. It will be obvious to those familiar with the art that as soon as the chair is rocked rearwardly the springs arranged forwardly of the center come into play and that the springs approximately alined with the center function to prevent excessive rearward motion.
As many changes are possible in the shape, size, and arrangement of the various parts shown, I do not limit myselfto the specific arrangement herein shown, but may make any such changes without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
What I claim is:
A revolving rocking chair comprising a lower annular plate, a plurality of integral arms secured to said plate, extending radially inwardly therefrom, joined at the center of the plate and provided at said center with an opening, an upper annular plate right angular in cross section, one leg of the angle being horizontal and adapted to contact the upper face of the lower annular plate, the other leg of the angle being vertical and adapted to contact the outer face of the lower annular plate, a plurality of integral arms connected with said upper plate, ex-
tending radially inwardly therefrom, joined at the center of the plate and provided at such center with an opening, means extending through said openings for rotatably connecting said plates, a rocking chair having its rockers in engagement with the upper surface of the upper plate and adapted to rock thereon, pairs of springs secured to substantially diametrioal portions of the upper plate and connecting said plate with said chair, and a plurality of braces extending from the center of the radiallydisposed arms connected to the upper plate and secured to said upper plate at points between and spaced from the outer ends of one of 15 the upper radial arms and the portions of the upper plate to which the said pairs 0 springs are secured.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
