`N'AIITIER F. GAGE, OF SMITH, NEVABA.
QUILTINGr-FRAME.
Application filed May 6, 1919. Serial No. 295,041.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, WALTER F. GAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Smith, in the county of Lyon and State of Nevada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Quilting-Frames, of which the following is a speciiication.
rihis invention has for its object to provide an improved frame embodying such novel features of construction as will permit the dimensions of the frame to be varied to accommodate it for use in connection with quilts of different sizes.
Another object is the provision of a quilting frame having a binding along the corner edges of the supporting members to which the material of the quilt or other object may be pinned or otherwise secured.
l/Vith these and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds the invention comprises the novel vfeatures of construction, accompanied by elements and arrangement of parts which rwill be more fully described in the following specification and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.
Figure 1 represents a plan view of the improved frame,
Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and,
Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of one of the leg attaching members of the frame detached.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views the numerals 5 indicate a pair of companion side members which may be constructed of wood or other suitable material and are formed at corresponding intervals with transverse recesses 6 adapted to be received within the recess portions 7 of the end members 8 whereby the side and end members are interloclied in adjusted position. As will be understood, the distance between the end members 8 may be varied, as desired, by engaging said members with the proper recesses 6 in the side members 5 and likewise the relative position of the side members may be varied by engaging1 them in the proper recesses 7 in the end members 8.
A pair of substantially U-shaped com,- panion leg attaching plates 9 and 11 is secured to the underside and adjacent each end of the members 5 by rivets or suitable fastening devices passed through registering apertures 13 formed on the facially abutting web portions of the plates and the terminals of the plates or attaching' members are directed angularly in spaced parallel relation as indicated at 10 and 12, the terminals being spaced an adequate distance apart to accommodate the reduced terminals 15 of the inclined supporting legs 1li and the latter aredetachably and pivotally supported in the attaching members by winged bolts 16.
The inner edges of the side and end members 5 and 8 are bound by a strip of fabric 17 secured in posit-ion by headed fasteners 18 and constituting adequate anchoring means for pins or other penetrating elements capable of securing the quilt or other object in position upon the frame.
in the foregoing it is evident that I have provided a quilting frame, which, when not in use, may be disassembled and stored in a comparatively small space, owing t0 the compact manner in which the parts may be grouped subsequent to detachment. in use, the legs 141 are secured in position by the screws 16 and the quilt or other work is secured in position by inserting pins through the edges of the material and through the fabric binding strips 17, proper adjustment of the side and end members being had by engaging them in appropriate recesses in the respective members.
TWhat I claim is:
1. A quilting frame including an adjustable frame structure, leg supporting members carried by the frame structure, said leg supporting members including substantially U-shaped plates having web portions of different lengths arranged one above the other and in facial abutment, said web portions being provided with registering openings, means passing through said openings and engaged in the frame structure for maintaining the leg supporting members in position thereon, the angular extremities of the lower plate being arranged in spaced relation to the angular extremities of the upper plate to provide spaces therebetween, inclined legs having the upper terminals coniined between the spaced angular extremities of the plates, and means to clamp said legs in position between said angular eX- tremities.
2. A quilting frame including an adjustable frame structure, leg supporting members carried by the frame structure, said leg supporting members including substantially U-shaped plates having Web portions of different lengths arranged one above the other in facial abutment and provided With registering openings, means passing through said registering openings and engaging the trame structure. to rigidly secure the leg supporting members in position, the angular extremities of the lower U-shaped plate being disposed in spaced relation to the angular extremities of the upper plate, in-
clined legs received in the spaces between the extremities of the plates, a pivotingl member extending through the spaced extremities of the plates and the leg for pivotally mounting the latter, and means to draw said angular extremities of the plates together to clamp the legs in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof, I aiix my signature hereto.
WALTER F. GAGE.
