To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, VERNON A. Jew, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Displaying the Covering of Boxesand other Containers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to devices for displaying the coverings of boxes or containers in such a manneras to simulate the actual boxes orcontainers.

In the sale of some articles, the covering or ornamentation of thebox or container plays an important part, since the containers are frequently selected with the view of matching .or harmonizing with other decorations. For example, boxes containing hairpins are frequently bought for the purpose of having the box create an ornamental or artistic appearance on a dresser or in a room, and consequently salesmen of such articles are obliged to carry with them many different boxes in' order to demonstrate their wares to dealers or retailers and these boxes occupy much space, and frequently become broken or injured in transit. Merely carrying samples of the covering material is not satisfactory, since the prospective purchase erscannot get a good idea as to the appearance of the boxes or containers by merely inspecting these samples.

The objects of thisinvention are to provide a device of this kind in which a sample of the covering material is used and in which the fiat sample is so-cut and lined as to represent the actual container or box; also to improve devices of this kind in the other respects hereinafter specified.

tainers are covered and which is out in such a mannerthat this part will form the basis fora representation, preferably of a box standing on a cover or lid, the outer edges of the part A corresponding to the outer edges of therepresentation of the boxand cover, and an upper part B, which is preferably made of paper and onwhich is preferably shown a representation of the interior and contents of the box. The upper part or member B is preferably either printed or otherwise formed to represent the upper edge, and the interior of the box, with or without the contents of the box.. For example, if the inner portions of the boxes are generally white, the upper part of the device may be printed on plain, white paper, the lines Z thereof representing the upper edges of the inner portions of the box. The upper part B is preferably cut along the outer edges of the representation erative relation to each other, as slipwnin Figs. 1 and 2, thereby producing a representation of a box standing upon its cover.

The device described has the advantages that it can be inexpensively produced since the upper portions B can be printed and cut in large quantities and the lower parts A can be also cut and printed at verylittle expense. The two parts of the device can then be placed in operative relation to each other by pasting the two parts on a page of a book, catalogue or other fiat display device, and the device then occupies very little space. By having the flap g of the upper part of the device extend under the lower part, the two parts of the device can be secured together, but if the devices are to be pasted in a book, the flap may be omitted if desired. In looking at the device, a correct idea can be obtained as to the appearance of the actual boxes and if it is desired to inspect the quality, color or design of the covering material of the box, this can be done since the material from which the part A of the device is made is the actual covering material which is to be used on the boxes, and not merely a lithographed copy or imitation thereof. A large number of devices of this kind can be pasted or secured in a book and the necessity of carrying the actual boxes or containers is eliminated.

I claim as my invention:

1. A device for displaying the covering material of containers, comprising a fiat part made of the covering material which it is proposed to use on the containers and which is cut and lined to represent the container, and a flat part arranged above said first mentioned part and which isprovided with a representation of the interior of the container. 1

2. A device for displaying the covering material of containers, comprising a flat part made of the covering material which it is proposed to use on the containers and which is cut and lined to represent the'container and the cover therefor out of'engagement with the upper portion of the container, and a'flat part arranged in operative relation to the upper. edge of said first mentioned part and which is provided with a mentioned sheet and which is provided with a representationof the interior of the 'box and which is arranged above the upper edge of said first mentioned sheet, to form therewith a representation of an open box standing on its cover.

A device for displaying the covering material of boxes com rising a sheet made of covering material which it is proposed to use on the boxes and which is cut in such a manner that the cut edges thereof represent the outer edges of a perspective view of a box and cover, and which is provided with lines representing other edges of a box and cover, and a sheet provided with a repre sentation of the interior of a box and 1 adapted to be secured in proximity to the edge of said first mentioned sheet which represents the upper edge of the box.

5. A device for displaying the covering material of containers, comprising a part made of the covering material which it is proposed to use on the containers and which is cutand lined to represent the container, and a part arranged above'said first mentioned part and which is provided with a V.

representation of the interior of the cont ainer and which hasa portion which is adapted to be secured to the rear face of said first mentioned member, said two parts being arranged substantially in the same planewhereby the device may form a part of a page of a book.
