To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. STRoUr, a citizen of the United States, and residentof Jersey City, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Coupling Releases, of which the following is a specificain the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
This invention relates to means for with drawing coupling pins and has for an object the provision of a device of this nature that shall not be injured by the movements of the draft gear due to buff, draft, or rounding of curves in the track.
An illustrative embodiment of theinvention isshown in the accompanying draw ings in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a device embodying the invention shown as the end of a car;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of this device removed from the car, on a larger scale;
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the device seen from the right of Fig. 1 with a portion of the car in section;
Fig. 4 is a section on line 44 of Fig. 3 looking upward and Fig. 5 is a detail section on line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
The end sill of a car is indicated at 10, the buffing plate at 11 and a coupler ofwell known type at 12.
For operation of the device embodying the invention there is shown a lever as 13 pivoted upon a stub shaft, as 14, which may be formed integral with a base plate, as 15, shown as secured to a portion of the car end, as the buffing plate 11. Lever 13 is shown as adapted to be operated for withdrawal of the coupling pin, as 17 by a pull upon a rod, as 18, preferably having the handle end supported in a bracket, as 19, adjacent the side of the car.
Stub shaft 14 may be formed with a reduced portion, as 20, providing a shoulder against which the lever 13 may seat, and the lever may be retained by a washer, as 21, and cotter pin, as 22.
To apply the lifting force to the coupling pin 17, a hook, as 23, may be connected with the pin, as by a link 24. To allow the hook 23 tofollow longitudinal movement of the coupler due to draft or buff, the arm 28 is preferably pivotally supported on lever 13. This may be readily accomplished if thejend of lever 13 be vided with a cylindrical socket, as 29, and if the arm be provided with pin,
portion ofthe wall of the than elsewhere so as to-provide a dovetailed form of wall, and the arm 28 is provided with an arcuate slot, as 32, which is dovetailed in vertical cross section, as plainly shown in Fig. 5, to mate with the socket wall. A portion of the socket wall is made of equal thickness from top to bottom, as at 33, and therefore if the arm 28 be revolved about the pin 30 through an angle of 180 from the position shown in the drawing, it may be freely removed.
The arms 13 and 28 with the hook 23 and its shank 25 constitute a bell crank having P Q- depression or as 30, to fit the depression;
an extensible arm, the arm made up of parts I 25 and 28 pivotally mounted on the other arm. lVhile, strictly speaking, the portion 13 below the pivot 14 constitutes one arm of the bell-crank, and the arm 28, shank 25 and socket 33 constitute the other arm,-yet it is as a portion of the first arm of the bell-crank for the following reasons: The action of the bell-crank to lift the coupler pin would be fully accomplished if the horizontal or weight arm of the crank extended directly from the pivot. The sole function of the extension of arm 13 upward beyond the pivot to provide socket of pivoting the weight arm of the bell-crank on the power arm. An equivalent construction would be a socket corresponding to 33, laterally offset from arm 13 and located at the left of stub-shaft 20, as seen in Fig. 3. The expression one arm pivotally mounted on the other arm is to be read as applying to 33, is for the purpose 7 the structure illustrated and its equivalents. The arm 28 and the hook 23 and its shank 25 also constitute means having universal movement in a single plane adapted to move with a coupling pin and When so considered the arm 13 constitutes means to move the first named means out of its plane of movement to pull the pin. By reason of this universal movement the device'may be operated to pull the pin irrespective of any lateral or longitudinal change of position of the coupler, and no injury to the release device Will result from such changes of position.
Many changes may be made in thevphysical embodiment of the invention Without departing from its spirit.
I claim as myinvention 1. In a coupling release, in combination, a bell. crank pivoted adjacent the coupling, said bell crank comprising two arms, one arm being extensible, the extensible arm as a Whole pivotally mounted on the other arm,
means for connecting the extensible arm to the coupling pin, and means for moving the bell crank about its pivot.
