' which the following is a This invention relates to flushing devices,
' nothing UNITED STATES, PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES BLACK WABES; OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
AUTOMATIC rnusn.
. Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed ma 13, 1919. Serial no. 298,768
Tb all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1. JAMES B. VVARES, a citizen of the United States, residin at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and tate of Nebraska have invented newand useful- Improvements in Automatic Flushes, of
specification.
particularly to those adapted for use inconnection with urinals or toilets of any kind, and has for its object the provision ofa. flush which is so constructed that the'reservoir tank will be emptied at predetermined intervals whereby the urinals or other toilets may be kept in a thoroughly sanitary condition. K
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which is constructed entirely of 'Inetaland which eliminates the use of moving parts whereby there will be to get out of order or to wear, the flushing by siphoning.
details, and view on the line 2-2 ofi Fig. 1.
may be formed of wood,
Referring more particularly to the draw ing, the numeral 10 designates a tank which metal, or other suitable material, and which may be of any desired size or shape.
Disposed within and extending through the bottom of the tank 10, is an outlet pipe 11 which is externally threaded for engage- ,nient thereon of a suitable waste pipe and also for engagement thereon oi a pack nut 12 hearing against the bottom of the tank at its underside. Intermediate its ends, the pipe 11 has formed thereon a circumferential flange 13 bearin upon the top of the bottom of the tank. cured upon theupper end of the pipe 11 is a cylindrical shell 14 which is open at its upper endl A cylindri- 19' which is disposed {cal member 15 and shell 14 and which ter action being accomplished purely adr construction to be hereinafter,
ing 23 communicates throu with the 3 re 1 is alongitudinal sectional'view cal member 15 is disposed within. the hell 14 and extends to the top thereof and this member 15. is preferably ofthe same diameter and forms i in effect, a continuation of the pi ,e 11. he space between the shell 14 an member 15 constitutes an annular chamber 16.
Supported within the tank 10 in any suit- Patented may 31 1921'.
able manner is an inverted c lindrical shell 17 which extends outwa y' beyond the shell 14 and which has its bottom end open ace and terminating between the u per sur of the bottom of the tank and t e bottom of the shell 14.. This shell 17 forms with the shell 14, an annular chamber 18. Formed orsecured upon the closed upper end of the shell 17 is a depending cylindrical member minates in spaced relation to the bottom of etween the cylindrithe shell 14. This memberJQ forms with the shell 14, an annular chamber 20 communicating with the annular chamber 16 and the cylindrical men is!" 19 forms with the member- 1 5 an annular chamber 21, also communicating with the chamber 16 and with the space 22 above the member 15.
Formed'upon one side of the shell 17 is.
a casing 23- which is preferably cylindrical rand which is of relatively small diameter compared withthe diameters of the above described shells. At its upper end,'the casv pace above the ell'll and. at its lower end is provided-with a nipple 25 providing sin/entrance opening 0 ve small diameter.
Immediately above the member 15 the shell'17 is provided with an opening closed by a plug 26 through which extends one end of an inverted U-shaped vent pipe 27 which extends abovethe top of the tank 10 and which has ltS 'OtllBI' end extending through a hole in'the plug 28 closing the top of the casing 23. This and of the pipe 27 extends downwardly into the casing 23 and terminates above the bottom thereof, A second inverted U-shaped ipe 29 has ,one end extending downwar extends through a second hole in the pl'ug 26 and has its below the maximum water level in the tan 10. The bore ofthis pipe must be lar 1 than the opening in the nipple 25 is iipper portion of the pipe 29 is coiled to pro-- highest portion terminatin h an' opening 24 y into the pipe 11 and vide a convolution 30 and the other end of this pipe extends through a second opening in the plug 28 and downwardly adjacent the bottom of the casing 23.
The operation of the lows Assuming that the tank 10 is empty, the
device is as 1- water entering the tank'through any suitable inletpipe, not shown, will rise throu h the nipple 25 into the casing 23, and w' 1 also rise into the annular chamber 18, which it will fill. When the chamber 18 becomes full l the water will flow over the top of the shell 14 and through the chamber-20 into .the
chamber 16, whence it will flow into'and fill the chamber 21. This forms an air trap within the chamber and space 22 and the parts are so arranged that this air trap will prevent water from rising sufliciently far' within the chamber 21 to flow into the momber 15 and eventually the pipe 11; As the water rises within the pipe 29, which is initially supplied with water, anair trap will be formed within the convolution until the water level within the tanklO ,reaches its maximum height, whereupon the air trap in the convolution 30 will be broken and the water will pass through the pipe 29 and into the pipe 11, causing a siphoning action, which willreduce the air pressure in the space 22 and start a siphoning action in the pipe 11 whichwi'll dram'the tank. As soon as the tank is empt the cycle of operations will be automatical y repeated.
From the foregoing description and a.
study of the drawing, it willbe apparent that I have thus provided a simple in.- expensive automatic flush for urinalstqilets, and the like, which involi'es the use (if 7 no moving parts and which also eliminates the use of gaskets. valves. and the like',-and\ q volutinn adapted to which will consequently be freefrom any derangement. T
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is of course to be understood that I reserve i the right to make such changes in the form,
construction, and arrangemenuof parts as i will not-depart fro'm'the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claimz-e a a -In combination with a tank, an outlet. pipe extending through the bottomof the"tank,--a
