*nIsPLAY-cABI'nn'r. I i V f To all whom it may concern.'-.
Be it known that I, BURTON L.'Jo11riso1 r,a
' citizen of the United States, residin at Knoxville, in the county of Knox and tate of Tennessee, have invented a new and use- 'ful Improvement in Display-Cabinets, of
which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanymg draw- 1n Tr 'g,
y improvement relates particularly to structures used for displaying articles of merchandise, for example, candles. The
object ofthe invention isto; provide such a structurefadapted' to display-at the same time a considerable number of-samples of candies, portions of said samples being accessible and others being visible but inaccessible and excluded from'the atmosphere.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a structure embodying my improvement;
Fig. 2 1s an uprlghtsection on the line,
22, of Fig. 1, looking toward the left;
Fig. 3 is an upright detail section'showj frlctlonal engagement in said chamber as ing one of'the drawers and walls forming'a compartment for the drawer; 1
Fig. 4; is an upright section on the line,
" 4-4, of Fig. 3, looking toward the right;
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal upright sectlon through the front or outer {part of one of thedrawers; Y W Fig. 6-is a perspective view of a box-like container, the two parts being separated from each other. f
Referring to said drawings, A. is a base or floor; A? is a back wall; A A are upright end walls; A is a horizontal top wall; A, A are upright partitions extending from the front rearward as far as the drawers are to extend; A A, are horizontal partitions extending rearward as far as the drawers are to extend. A stop bar, A, extends horizontally across the rear end of each upright partition, A between the partitions, A", to form a stop or limit for the rearward movement of the drawers. The front edges of the end walls and the partitions, A"; are inclined rearward. That makes the front of the structure slant rearward. The rear edges of the partitions, A slant rearward in a plane which is parallel with the plane of the front of the structure.
The base or floor, A, and the top wall, A and the end walls, A, and the partitions, A and A, form horizontal compartments which receive drawers, B. The ends of said Application filed arch 11,1919. .se iaiivoxzsrets;
i se men of.eemireea- 1 Patented May, 31, 192i.
1 orinner endsof the drawers are inclined so compartments are inclined rearward because .the part1t1ons,A have their front and rear as to conform to thei'slantaofthe ends ofend wallra' chamber or-recessg i B in which The faces of said chamberwhich meet the ,outerxfaces'ofthe drawer are perpendicular to the end'of' the drawer. On account ofthe Said "container is'in boxform and comprises a'body, C and a lid, C having side w1ngs,-O?, adapted to extend over the side walls, C of the body, "C 1 The wings, C are to be bent-outward far enoughto cause theirafree" edges tobear against the inner faces of the chamber, B ,.and make such said compartments." The rear or inner ends 1 of the drawers-bear agalnstithe stop bars,.A Every drawer has in'the front of its outer restsa container, C, formed of sheet metal. a
will holdsaid lid-in said chamber. -The depth of said chamber and thecori'esponding dimension of the container arepreferablyequalfso as to bring'the outer face of the container" flush with theouter 'facebf v the end of the drawer. H v M In the. lid of the container; is a-w'indew opening, (3. On the inner face vofthelid', a plate of glass, 0 extends over said opening and is held in'positionv by retaining members, C seated on the inner face of the lid and extending'over theedge of the.plate, C
An aperture, B extends from the chamber, B rearward through the outer end wall of the drawer. A finger or other object may be extended through said aperture from within the drawer to bear against the container, C, and force the container out of the chamber, B A knob, B seated on the outer end wall of the drawer is to be engaged to pull the drawer outward.
Immediately at the rear of the place 00- cupied by the front wall of the drawer when the drawer is closed, a stop member, A", is secured to the lower face of the adjacent superposed partition, A or, in the case of the upper compartments, top wall, A. When the drawer is pulled outward horizontally, the inner end wall of the drawer meets said stop member. This engagement prevents pulling the drawer forward horiinserting the drawer, a reverse movement is made, the outer end of the drawer being I raised and the'drawer then moved rearward until the inner-end wall has passed therstop member.
This action is made possible by constructing the rear end of the drawer "to incline rearward, whereby theupper part of the rear end of the drawer is made to extend farther rearward than the lower part of the drawer is extended. The upper part of the rea'r'end of the drawer isstill in engagement with the stop :member ':while the lower part of said rear end is free to move outward. Furthermore, this form of the drawer and the positioning of the front edges of the .the drawer when it has been pulled forward far enough to expose the rear part of the drawer to view. The rear end of *the bottom of the drawercan rest on the next lower horizontal partition (the partition serving as a fulcrum) while the rearward-extending upper part of the drawer engages the next upper horizontal partition, the latter being set backward far enough to permit looking into and to afford access to the rear part of the drawer. By the use of the structure forming compartments for the drawers as above described, all the drawers may be identical in size and form andfreely interchangeable.
Every container, O, is to be filled with a sample lot of candy which the customer can see through the glass, O", in the window opening, O But said candy is not accesvaried.
The drawings show the structure supported on a table, D. An-y similar support may be used.
I claim as my invention 1. In a structure of the nature described, a drawer havlng a front wall, a container fitted for frictional engagement in the front face of said front wall and the container having-a window in its front wall.
2. In a structureof the nature described,
a drawer :having a fixed front wall in the outer faceof which is a:chamber,-a container fitted into said chamber and comprising a body anda lid'one of which has a window.
'3. In a structure of the'nature described, a drawer having front wall in the outer face of which is a chamber, a removable container fitted into said chamber, said contamer having a'lld havlng free-side wlngs adapted to bear against the faces of the frictional engagement with the faces of said chamber. 7
In testimony whereof I have signed my name this 4th day of March, in'the year one thousand nine hundred and nineteen.
BURTON I1. JOHNSON.
