To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, ANroiNE ANDnnANI, of Geneva, Switzerland, a subject oi the King of ltaly, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Locks, of which the following is a speciiication.
The invention relates to locks of the type wherein a barrel is normally locked, against rotation, by means of sliders adapted to be retracted by means of the key.
According to the invention the sliders are small rods or cylinders disposed in two rows in the barrel, at opposite sides of the key way, the sliders in these two rows being thrust in opposite directions by springs, to
, engage a shell or casing inclosin the barrel, and each slider having a latere projection extending into the key-way so disposed that insertion of the key retracts the lseveral sliders to the proper extent. rlhe lateral projections may be in the form of hooks, oppositely bent as regards the two rows, the key 4having two side plates which engage under these hooks .and an undulating web which penetrates between the tips of the hooks and F int e sliders Ain the locking position.
ig. 3 is a longitudinal section, and Fig.
d a cross section, showing the lock with the ke inserted and the tumblers retracted.
Fig. 5 is an velevation of the key and Fig.
6 a cross section thereof.
Fig. 7 is an elevationv of the shell, with the sheath removed.
Fig. 8 is a cross-section of the barrel in the I second modication, and
Fig. 9 is a plan view thereof.
Referring in the first instance to Figs. l
to 7, a designatesthe shell, b the sheath, -c
the barrel and al the sliders. The sliders are disposed in two parallel rows at the sides of the key-way in the barrel. Each of the sliders is acted on by a spring e, tending to thrust it into a hole f in the shell, the sliders in the two rows moving in opposite directions. The spring is coiled upon a shank g of the slider, which is in line with a hole m in the shell. The key consists of a handle and two parallel narrow side plates or strips Specicaton ofi Letters Patent.

k having between them an undulating web h1, and the plates are chamfered or beveled to a point at their free ends, somewhat beyond the end of the web. rlhe sliders have I hooks g projecting into the key-way, the hooks bei the respective sliders are thrust by ltheir springs. en the key is inserted into the key-way obstructed by thehooks the beveled ends of the side plates enable these plates to slide under the hoomand slightly retract the sliders, but complete retraction of the sliders is not edected until the web of the key has been pushed between the ti s of the oppositely directed hooks. When the key has-been fully inserted, each slider has been retracted to the extent required to disbent in the direction in which engage it from the shell o. Any excess.
movement beyond this retraction, by the use ot a wrongly shaped key or other implement, will cause the shank g to enter the hole lm., so that the slider will again lock the barrel. When the barrel is free it can be rotated by the key to actuate the stem o and phekbolt or other appropriate member of the ln the modihcation shown in Figs. 8 and 9, the sliders p are dat strips cut away at one edge to form a shoulder, and in the barrel there are members r, each having a similar shoulder, the springs g being lodged between the shoulders of the sliders and members r. Y
lt willbe clear that a single key may serve for opening two such. locks, which are alike in all respects except that in one of them some of the sliders are omitted, say two or three sliders near the key entrance, but that in' that case a key designed solely for actuating or setting the smaller. number of tumblers will not open the lock having the full number. f
lt will be noted that the key entrance may be made very small, as its size can be limited to the small cross sectional area of the key.
What l claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is In a lock the combination of a shell, a barrel rotatable in said shell and having a key-way, two parallel rows of sliders mounted in said barrel at opposite sides of said y key-wa said sliders having o positely directed ooked members extending into said key-way, springs thrusting said sliders in opposite directions into engagement with Q Let/eee@ seid shell, and a push-key having two par- In witness whereof JI bave signed ehs adlel side plates adapted to engage seid specification in the presence of two 'withooked members, and an undulating web messes..
