This invention relates generally to metal wheels and more particularly to a box felly to be used in connection with sheet metal wheels of either the disk or spoke type of construction.
The object of the invention is to provide a strong and durable felly which is adapted for use in connection with any and all types of felly bands to which are applied de-V mountable tire carrying rims. y
Another object of the invention is to provide a box yfelly of strong and durable construction and to which the felly band can be secured either by riveting or spot welding.
With these objects in view, and certain others which will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel features of construction and in the novel manner of combining the several features, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and set forth in the claims.
. In the drawings forminga part ofthis speciiication I have shown one embodiment of my invention and in which Figure 1 is a sectional perspective view showing a portion of the box felly; Fig. 2 is ar plan view of a portion of the boxfe'lly; Fig. 3 is a plan view of a portion of the felly band; Fig. 4 is a plan view of a portion of the f elly band upon the box felly; Fig. 5 isa sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 6 6 of Fig. 4.
The felly is made circular in form from a strip of sheet metal the ends of which are united by welding. The felly comprises an inner or bottom portion A, side walls B, and the outer or top portion C. These outer or top portions C are the opposite edges ofthe metal strip turned inwardly and madek to approach each other as shown, saidouter or top portions being parallel with the inner or bottom portions of the felly thereby providing with the side walls an angular box like structure.
' Upon this box felly is arranged a 'felly Specification of Letters Patent.

D, linclined or shoulder E atthe inner, orrearedgethereof'while at the outer or front edge there. isjprovided a lflange FprojectingradiaHy inward or towardthe center of the wheel body. This {iange F snugly fits over the outer side wall of the box felly as most clearly shown in Figs. 5 and 6 and the edge Gr of this felly band is beveled as shown for the engagement of a wedge fasteningring or wedge clamp (not shown) used in connection with theordinary construction of automobile tire carryrims upon the wheel. The depending flange F'may be omitted if desired.Y It will be noted by reference to 2 that the top portions C are cut away at opposite points as shown at H so that when the felly is folded, central openings will be provided 'entirely around-the box felly. p
It will also be noted by reference to Fig. 3 that the felly band has a series of openings K produced therein, the relative location or spacing of these. openings corresponding with the openings I in thebox felly and when the felly band is applied to the` box felly, theseopenings K are brought directly in alinement with the openings I and by reference to Fig. 4 it will be seen that the openings K while of the same gen# eral contour as the openings I areslightly f Patented May anliegt.
ing rims for the purpose of securing said 'smallersothat thevedges vof the openings I are entirely concealed from view after theV felly band has Vbeen properly placed. The openings I and K materially decrease the Yso weight of the device as aY whole without materially detracting vvfrom the strength of the article as these openings are so positioned that the felly band and the box felly will not'be-weakened. In addition to making the article lighter, provision is made for the insertion of suitable riveting or welding tools it being understood that the opposing members of-said tools can be brought into engagement with the top portion C and un-' connected however a complete unitary article will be provided having the maximumv of strength toward a` given quantity of weight and the felly structure will be provided capable of use in connection with any and al1 types of demountable tire carrying rims as it will be understood that the surface of the felly band will be of the proper contour to receive its particular type of rim. It is also obvious that a feliy structure of the kind described can be used in connection with either disk wheel bodies or spoked wheel bodies and in fact could be used in connection with the ordinary wooden spokes.
walls, and inwardly projecting top portions cut away at intervals, and a band having openings at intervals, and arranged* upon and attached to said top portions, the openings in the band registering with the openings in the felly top.
v2. A felly for metal spoked wheels adapted to receive a tire carrying rim comprising top, bottom and side portions, and a band arranged upon said top portion and having openings at predetermined points.
In testimony whereof, hereunto affix my signature.
