TOOL.
T 0 all 20 7mmit may concern lowing is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
.The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in rotary rasps.
Rotary rasps are generally used in combination with a wire brush by mounting the brush on one end of a driven shaft and the rasp on the other end thereof. Heretofore it has been common practice to make the rasps out of a solid piece of steel which has proven very unsatisfactory as the driven shaft is unbalanced, the wire wheel weighing about a} pounds, whereas the solid steel rasp weighs approximately 18 to 20 pounds.
Hence with the above and other inherent objections in mind, my invention has for one of its objects to provide a rotary rasp which will be so constructed as to be extremely light in weight and to evenly balance with the usual wire brush or the like generally employed in combination therewith.
Another objection to the solid form of rotary rasp is that the same is very expensive as when the teeth become dull it is necessary to buy an entirely new tool. There fore, my invention has for another of its objects to provide a rotary rasp in which the rasp proper is carried by a holder and is capable of ready removal.
A further object of this invention is to provide a rotary rasp formed from tubular material and having a holder for securing the same upon a driven shaft.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the hereindisclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention con- Specificaticn of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 1, 1919. Serial No. 341,569.
structed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of my novel form rasp illustrating the same as arranged on driven shaft with a rotary wire brush. ig. 2 is an enlarged view of my novel foun rasp detached, said view having parts roken away and in section to more clearl illustrate its details of construction, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken through a portion of my novel form of rasp on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 to illustrate the novel form of cutting teeth I provide.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, the numeral 5 designates a machine standard having a shaft 6 j ournaled in the upper end thereof, which shaft is rotated by means of a motor direct therewith or by means of a driven belt 7. lVhile in Fig. l I have shown my novel form of rotary rasp as fixed to one end of the shaft 6, to the other end of which is fixed a wire brush or the like 8, it will be understood that my invention is readily capable of use alone, but it being common practice in the art to mount a wire brush or the like on one end of the driven shaft and a rotary rasp on the other.
My novel form of rotary rasp consists of a tubular member or ring 9 having a plural ity of cutting teeth 10 formed thereon by gouging the periphery thereof as at 11, see Fig. 5. The ring member 9 is formed from ordinary steel tubing and hardened, as will be later described. The teeth 10 are arranged in staggered relation as best shown in Fig. 2 so that material cut thereby will work to one side through the alined staggered channels formed therebetween as will be seen by reference to Fig. 2.
The rasp proper is detachably mounted upon a holder whereby the same may be renewed when the cutting teeth 10 thereof have become worn or broken. The novel holder which I employ consists of two complementary flange members 12 having hub members 13 formed centrally therein and provided with axially alined bores 14 for en-. gagement by the drive shaft 6 or the like and each having a peripheral rim 15 for telescoping engagement with the adjacent ends of the ring or rasp proper, as best shown in Fig. 2. r
The flange members 12 have a plurality of spaced apertures 16 therein adapted to be brought into alinement to receive suitable binding or securing members 17 for holding the members 12 together and binding the rasp member'therebetween. The telescoping engagement of the members 12 with the rasp member is limited by means of a laterally extending annular rib lSeformed on each 1 member 12 adjacent its outer peripheral edge, the ribs 18 binding against the edges of the rasp member, as best shown in Fig. 2
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing,it will be at once apparent to those skilled in the art to which an invention of this kind appertains that I provide a rotary rasp for the purpose described which will be extremely light in weight when compared to the old type ofrotary rasp, which will i be readily renewable when the cutting teeth thereof have become worn and lost their cutting qualities and which will be practical for the purpose described.
IVhat I claim for invention 1s: 1.- A'tool comprising a one-piece annular tubular member formed from a length pipe, cutting teeth stuck up from the outer peripheral surface thereof, and a said member.
2. A tool comprising a one-piece ringshaped rasp member, and a holder for said member thereon.
4. A rotary tool comprising two complementary flange members, an annular rib formed on each flange member adjacent its outer peripheral edge, a tubular rasp member engageable over the inner portion of the periphery of each flange member, said an nular ribs limiting this telescoping engagement of the rasp member over the flange members, and means for drawing the flange members toward each other to secure the rasp member thereon. V V
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signa- ERNST ANHEUSER.
