Description
R. J.' KLATH.
ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT oFFjlcE.l
RUTH J. KLATH, or ADAMS, NORTH DAKOTA.
HEM- GAGE. j
' i Application mea May Y19,
To all whom z'tmay concern:
Be it known 'that I, RUTH J. KLATH, a citizen of the United States, residing A at Adams, in the county of Walsh and lState of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hem-Gages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a gage for skirt hems and the principal object of the invention is to insure an even hem of any desirable width.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for holding a marking slide at any desired position on a plate provided with indicating marks representing inches and fractions thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide teeth on the slide for engaging the goods against which the hem is laid to avoid slipping of the slide, thus causing an uneven hem.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost. l
lThe invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure l is a front view of the device.
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the device shown applied.
This device is designed for use by dressmakers and others when basting in a hem and comprises a flat, elongated plate 1 provided with a central slot 2 said plate being provided with indicating marks 3 representing inches and fractions thereof. 4 is a slide extending at right angles to the plate and movably secured thereto by a thumb screw 5, said screw passing through the slot 2 and engaging said slide. Said slide at one side has bent-up portions 6 located 0n each specification f Letters Patent.
,Patented May 24, 1921.y 1917. Serial No. 169,754.
side of the plate anda like portion 7 eX- tending through the slot Zand said bent-u portionsv are provided with teeth 8.
`Inlay make my `device out of nickel-plated tin, Celluloid or any other suitable material and said device may also be of any suitable size.
In using the device after the length of the skirt has been marked by a chalk line or by pins at the point indicated at a and the hem has been turned up along this line on the skirt the width of the hem is measured by theA gage and the slide 4 is set with its flange 6 abutting the folded edge a as is shown clearly in Fig. 4. When the width of the hem is up, say 4, this slide is secured at the 4 mark on the plate by tightening up the set screw 5 and when so tightened the distance from the front end on plate l to the flange 6 will be 4". The flange 6 is then placed against the upturned lower edge of the skirt bottom shown at a in Fig. 4 with its teeth 8 eX- tending downwardly to engage the object or table upon which the skirt is placed, and the hem width is marked on the goods with chalk, or otherwise, along a line even with the top or front end of plate 1 as shown at b The hem is then turned in on this chalk line b and basted to form a hem of uniform width around the skirt. It will be obvious that by placing the flange 6 of the slide against the folded edge a of the skirt that the member l will be positioned 4 from said line or fold a and the chalk line formed at I) along the top or front edge of the measuring device will make a hem of uniform width which is turned in along said chalk line b and basted in the usual manner.
The utility of the teeth 8 is apparent when the material being hemmed is placed upon other cloth to prevent shifting thereof upon cloth and the gage is positioned so that the ange engages the folded edge a and the teeth 8 depend and engage or penetrate the cloth upon which the sln'rt is placed, whereby the teeth prevent the gage from accidentally slipping.
The gage can be stored in any sewingmachine drawer and it will take the place of the tape measure heretofore used and will render unnecessary the use of pieces of card board or paper measured and notched 4to indicate the width of the hem.
It is thought from the foregoing that the advantages and novel features of my inven l tion will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that vI may make slight changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided such changes fall within thescope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A hem gage comprising a plate, a slide yassociated therewith, and teeth on the slide extending laterally from the plane of the and said flange having teeth on its free edge.v
3. A hem gage comprising an elongated plate having a slot therein, a slide arranged 20 transversely of said plateand having each end' projecting beyond the longitudinal edges of said plate, said slide having teeth Vprojecting angularly therefrom at opposite ends of the slide, and one between its ends 25 to project through said slot.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
d y RUTH J. KLATl-I.
