To all whom'it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES HANSEN, a citizen of the'United States, and resident of San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Phonographs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful means for reproducing sounds.
It is the object of my invention to provide a machine of the character indicated in which the recording or reproducing mechanism is embodied in one simple structure positioned over the record, that is, in which the one structure embodies the sound reproducer, conveyer and distributor. It is a further object of my invention to provide a structure of the character indicated that can be readily ada ted for use on any type of record, that wi 1 be economical to manufacture, durable, simple in structure and mode of operation, highly eflicient in its practical application, and that will more equally distribute sound than those forms requiring the use of a horn.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of a phonograph embodying my invention, part being broken away.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 indicates a phonograph case fitted with top 2 hinged at 3 and held open by jointed brace 4. A motor is indicated formally at 5 operating a plate 6 through belt 7 and pulley 8, a circular disk record being shown in position on plate 6 at 9 and revolving therewith.
At 10 is shown an arm of suitable sound wave conducting material such as light, dry, well seasoned wood, extending from a point 1n a line extending crosswise of record 9 and through the axis thereof to a point be yond the rear edge of said record. The forward end of arm 10 is fitted with a suitable socket 11 to receive a needle 12, and its upper edge is supplied with a ball 13 to engage, when raised, a socket 14 secured to the inner surface of top 2 so that the member may be held out of the way while records are being changed.
Arm 10 has a cross member 15 secured to its rear end, the same being wider than arm 10 and extending both above and belowthe same, the lower edge of member 1-5 having a forwardly extending shelf-like member 16 secured thereto as shown.
Secured to the upper edge of arm 10 and spaced a distance from member 15 is a wide, flat, thin member 17 extending equal distances on both sides of arm 10 and forming vibrating wings. At 18-18 are shown webs secured to the under sides of Wings 17 and depending therefrom in parallel relation to arm 10, each web supporting a plate 19 in parallel relationto wings 18 and spaced a distance from arm 10 and members 15 and 16. These webs 18 are preferably provided with openings as at 20 to reduce the points of contact with the wings 15.
In the construction described the several parts are secured firmly together by any suitable means as by screws or gluing, the upper edge of arm 10 being grooved as at 21 in the present case in order to provide a firm seat for member 17 Upon the central part of the rear surface of member 15 is bolted a vertically arranged socket member 22 engaging a pin 23 on horizontal hinge 24, the latter being mounted to revolve on pin 25 secured to casing 1 by bracket 26. The arm 10 and parts connected thereto may be swung upwardly on pin 23 and secured in an inoperative position by ball 13 engaging socket 14, and it may work laterally over the record 9 by swinging on pivot 23.
The several members 101516-17- 1819 may be made of any suitable material for the purpose disclosed and of any desired proportions, areas or design according to the result desired. For instance in Fig. 2 is shown member 17 mounted on arm 10, the needle 12 being in position but the mounting of the device on the phonograph case 1 being omitted for the purpose of simplifying the drawing. In this very simple construction a definite, clear but somewhat faint reproduction of the sounds recorded on the record is produced, the. volume being somewhat enhanced by the addition of member 15 as shown in Fig. 3, and still further increasedby the addition of member 16 as shown in Fig. 4. When in addition to these members 15 and 16 the members 18 and 19 being thrown off lateraly as well as forwardly andtherefore being fully as distinct at any point to the side of the machine as at the front thereof. a This construction also effectually eliminates the harsh blast of sound that frequently results from discharging the sound waves through a confined space as in a horn.
In the embodiment here illustrated the member 11 is made sufliciently wide to di: vide the space under member 17 into two distinct parts, and the members 19 are suspendedin these spaces with freely "ibrating edges, the members 10 and 18 preferably having greater width than thickness and members 15 and 16 being of substantially the same length as the width of member 17.
The socket 12 is also shown as being hollow with thin metal walls as this construction appears to improve the reproducing qualities of the, invention.
It is understood of course that while I have herein shown and described one particular embodiment of my invention and several modified forms thereof, this embodiment and the modified forms are to be considered as illustrative only, and that changes in form, proportions and relative arrangement of parts, members and features may be made within the scope of the appended claims. While excellent results have been secured by the use of dry brittle redwood it is to be understood that any suitable material having the requisite characteristics may be used.
I claim:
1. A device of the character indicated including a vibrating arm arranged in a vertical plane, a record engaging point operatively mounted in one end thereof, means for mounting said arm and point in operative relation to a record, and a wing-like member mounted on said arm and extending laterally therefrom.
2. A device of the character indicated including a vibrating arm arranged in a vertical plane, a record engaging point operatively mounted on one end thereof, means for mounting said arm and point in operative relation to a record, and a wing-like member mounted on said arm and extending laterally therefrom and substantially equal distances on both sides thereof.
3. A device of the character indicated including a vibrating arm, a record engaging point operatively mounted on one end thereof, means for mounting said arm and point in operative relation to a record, a wing-like member mounted on said arm and extending laterally therefrom, and a second member mounted on the other end of said arm at substantially right angles thereto.
4. A device of the character indicated including a vibrating arm, a record engaging point operatively mounted on one end thereof, means for mounting said arm and point in operative relation to a record, a wing-like member mounted on said arm and extending laterally therefrom, and a second member mounted on the other end of said arm at substantially right angles thereto and spaced 2. distance from said wing-like member.
5. A device of the character indicated including a vibrating arm, a record engaging point operatively mounted on one end thereof, means for mounting said arm and point in operative relation to a record, a winglike member mounted on said arm and extending laterally therefrom, and a second member mounted on the other end of said arm at substantially right angles thereto, of greater width than thickness and spaced a distance from said wing-like member.
6. A device of the character indicated including a vibrating arm, a record engaging point operatively mounted on one end thereof, means for mounting said arm and point in operative relation to a record, a winglike member mounted on said arm and extending laterally therefrom, and a second member mounted on the other end of said arm at substantially right angles thereto of, means for mounting said arm and point in operative relation to a record, a winglike member mounted on said arm and extending laterally therefrom, and a second member mounted on the other end of said arm at substantially right angles thereto and having a length substantially equal to the width of said wing-like member.
8. A device of the character indicated includin a vibrating arm of greater width than t ickness, a record engaging point operatively mounted on one end thereof, means for mounting said arm edge-wise with said point in operative relatio to a record, a wing-like member mounte on the upper portion of said arm and intermediate the ends thereof and extending laterally a distance on both sides thereof and at substantially right angles thereto, and a second member of greater width than thickness mounted upon the other end of said arm, extending a distance below the same and spaced a distance from said wing-like member.
9. A device of the character indicated including a vibrating arm, a record engaging point operatively mounted on one end thereof, means for mounting said arm and point in operative relation to a record, a wing-like member mounted on said arm and extending laterally therefrom, a second member mounted on the other end of said arm at substantially right angles thereto, and a third member mounted on said second member and extending forwardly therefrom.
10. A device of the character indicated including a vibrating arm, a record engaging point oper tively mounted on one end thereof, means or mounting said arm and point in operative relation to a record, a wing-like member mounted on said arm and extending laterally therefrom, a second member mounted on the other end of said arm at substantially right angles thereto, and a third member mounted on said second member and extending forwardly therefrom and spaced a distance below the lower edge of said arm.
11. A device of the character indicated including a vibrating arm adapted to have a record engaging point operatively mounted on one end thereof, means for mounting said arm in operative relation to a record, a wing-like member mounted on the upper portion of said arm and intermediate the ends thereof and extendin laterally a distance on both sides thereoi a second member mounted u on the other end of said arm in substantial y parallel relation to said wing-like member and extending therebelow, and a plate supported in substantially parallel relation to said wing-like member on each side of said arm and spaced a distance from said arm and said second member.
12. A device of the character indicated including a vibrating arm adapted to have a record engaging point operatively mounted on one end thereof, means for mounting said arm in operative relation to a record, a wing-like member mounted on the upper portion of said arm and intermediate the ends thereof and extending laterally a distance on both sides thereof, and a plate supported in substantially parallel relation to said wing-like member on each side of said arm and spaced a distance therefrom.
13. A device of the character indicated including a vibrating arm adapted to have a record engaging point operatively mounted on one end thereof, means for mounting said arm in operative relation to a record, a wing-like member mounted on the upper portion of said arm and intermediate the ends thereof and extending laterally a distance on both sides thereof, a second member mounted upon the other end of said arm in substantially parallel relation to said winglike member and extending therebelow, a third member mounted on said second member, extending forwardly therefrom, and spaced a distance below said arm, and a plate supported in substantially parallel reation to said wing-like member on each side of said arm and spaced a distance from said arm and said second member.
14. A device of the character indicated including a vibrating arm adapted to have a record engaging point operatively mounted on one end thereof, means for mounting said arm in operative relation to a record, a wing-like member mounted on the upper portion of said arm and intermediate the ends thereof, a second member mounted upon the other end of said arm in substantially parallel relation to said wing-like member and extending therebelow, a web member mounted edge-wise upon the under side of each laterally extending portion of said wing-like member and in substantially the center thereof, and a plate mounted upon the lower portion of each web member in substantially parallel relation to said winglike member and spaced a distance from said arm and said second member.
15. A device of the character indicated including a vibrating arm adapted to have a record engaging point operatively mounted on one end thereof, means for mounting said arm in operative relation to a record, a wing-like member mounted on the upper portion of said arm and intermediate the ends thereof and extending laterally a distance on both sides thereof, a second member mounted upon the other end of said arm in substantially parallel relation to said wing-like member and extending therebelow, a web member having an opening formed therein mounted edgewise upon the under side of each laterally extending portion of said wing-like member and in substantially the center thereof, and a plate mounted upon the lower portion of each web member in substantially parallel rela tion to said wing-like member and spaced a distance from said arm and said second member.
