To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY VAssnLLr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Spring-Motors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to spring motors, and more particularly to that type of such motors as are employed in disk record talking machines.
The objects of my invention are to provide a spring motor of small size; of compact arrangement; which will be noiseless in operation; which will have few parts; which will be cheap to construct; in which the speed ratio between the spring shaft and the turntable spindle may be changed; and by means of which a greater difference in speed of the spring shaft relatively to the turntable shaft is obtained, whereby more powerful springs may be employed and the duration of run of the turn-table greatly increased.
A further object of my invention is to produce a device of the character herein described, which will be simple in character, easy to manufacture, effective in operation, and in the construction of which materials may be used which will greatly reduce the cost of production without in any way affecting the eiiiciency, quality or usefulness of the structure.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means for a spring motor, of the character herein described, which are eX- tremely simple in construction, neat and attractive in appearance, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in its purpose, and economical to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view to be more fully set forth hereinafter, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described in thespecifications and illustrated in the accompanying drawings considered together or separately.
The inventive idea involved is capableiof receiving a variety of mechanical expressions one of which for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawings.

In carrying out my invention, I provide a motor frame comprising a base 1 provided with depending lugs 2, 8, 4, 5 and 6, and a plate 7 secured to the lower extremities of the lugs 3 and 6.
The lug 2 is provided with a vertical groove 8 in its outer face, and a bracket 9 is secured by means of a single bolt 10 to the lug. The bracket is provided with a fin 11 which engages the groove and prevents the bracket from pivoting on the bolt 10.
Mounted in the free extremity of the bracket 9 and in the lug 5 is a spring shaft l2, which carries a spring or. springs in a two-part spring barrel 13. Carried on the shaft 12 is a spur gear 14 which meshes with a pinion 15 carried on a winding shaft 16 journaled in the lugs 5 and 6. The outer extremity of the shaft 16 is threaded for the reception of the usual winding crank.
The spring shaft carries a ratchet wheel 17 cooperating with a pawl 18 loosely mounted on the winding shaft. A leaf spring 19 is carried by the pawl, and bears against a collar 20 rigidly secured to the shaft 16. When the shaft 16 is rotated in the clockwise direction, the friction of the spring 19 on the collar 20 will rotate the pawl and swing its point out of the path of the teeth of the ratchet wheel 17 A stop 21 carried by the pawl, is adapted to engage the side of the lug 5' and prevent further rotation of the pawl. The driving spring within the barrel 13 will now be wound, and the pawl, being out of engagement with the ratchet teeth, will eliminate any chattering sound or noise.

the driving spring is allowed to unwind, it will rotate the shaft 16 in the counter clockwise direction, and the engagement of the spring 19 with the collar 20 will rotate the pawl in'that direction until its point -en-.

The worm wheel engages and drives a worm 28 on a vertical counter shaft 24 journaledin the base 1 and the plate 7. The worm shaft carries a removable spur gear 2 L, preferably Composed of chine turn-table.
The turn-table shaft carries a worm wheel 27 which meshes with and drives a worm 28 and the turn-table shaft 26 on a horizontal governor shaft 29, upon which is a governor 30, the same comprising the usual balls and a sliding disk 31, coopcrating with a brake shoe 32, whereby the speed of the motor may be regulated as is common. y Y 7 A shaft 33 is journaled in the base 1, and carries a brake shoe 34: which cooperates with the periphery of the disk 31. The shaft 33 extends upward through the motor board (not shown), to which the base 1 is attached, and is provided with means whereby the brake shoe may be applied to the'disk to arrest the rotation of the motor.

By the construction of a motor as herein described, I have discovered that I can secure a very quietly running motor in which chattering and noises are eliminated, and that I have a more compact motor than one which employs a worm drive table shaft without the use of theinterme- (hate or counter-shaft worm mechanism herein mentioned.
Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patcut is as follows:
