Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 24, 1921.
Application filed. September 9, 1919. Serial No. 322,736.
To all to from it may concern:
Be it known that I, CALVIN l3. STEDDOM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Lo Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Desks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to desks and consists of the novel features herein shown, described and claimed.
Specifically my object is to make an improved sliding shelf for ofiice desks and the like.
Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical cross section of a desk embodying the principles of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective of the writing shelf shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3-3 of Fig.2.
Fig. 1- is a fragmentary sectional detail on the line 4* 4: of Fig. 2.
The shelf 1 ha side rails 2 and 3, a cross rail 4 at the front ends of the side rails 2 and 3, and a lower writing plate 5. The lower writing plate 5 fits in grooves 6 and 7 extending from the inner faces of the side rails 2 and 3 and in a groove 8 that is formed in the inner face of the cross rail 4:.
The upper face 9 of the lower writing plate 5 is substantially half way down from the upper faces 10 of the side rails 2 and 3 and cross rail at.
The upper writing plate 11 is formed of transparent glass and has beveled sides 12 and 13 fitting in grooves formed in the inner faces of the side rails 2 and 3 a short distance above the lower writing plate 5, so that the upper face 1% of the upper writing plate 11 is flush with the upper faces of the rails 2, 3 and 4t, and so that there is a space 15- between the upper face 9 of the lower writing plate 5 and the lower face of the upper writing plate 11.
Writing paper 16 is placed upon the face 9 suitably for receiving memoranda, such as telephone numbers, addresses and the like.
W hen it is desired to write upon the paper 16 the glass plate 11 is moved baole wardly. It is intended that the paper 16 will only be applied to the front half of the lower writing plate 5.
The recess 17 is gaged from the center of the upper rear corner of the cross rail 4 so as to provide a thumb hold for engaging the upper writing plate 11 to push it backwardly and expose the paper 16.
After the writing has been done the upper plate 11 is moved to its normal position and the Inemoranda upon the paper 16 may be read through the glass and if desired, the surface of said glass plate may serve as a support for paper while the :une is being written upon.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my llfrdltlOll as claimed.
1 claim:
The combination with a desk of a shelf arranged to slide horizontally beneath the top of the desk said shelf comprising a frame that is composed of side rails and a front rail, there being grooves formed in the lower portions of the inner faces of said front and side rails, which grooves occupy the same horizontal plane, a panel having its front and side edges seated in said grooves, there being channels formed in the inner faces ofthe side rails of the frame above said panel, a glass panel having its side edges mounted for sliding movement in said channels, said glass panel being spaced apart from the first mentioned panel, the top surface of said glass panel occupying the same horizontal plane with the top surfaces of the rails of the frame and there being a finger receiving recess formed in the inner upper edge of said frame.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
CALVIN B. STEDDOM.
