To all whom it may concern:
Be' it known thatl I, LAURENCE S. LACH- MAN, a citizen of the United States, and a residentof New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certainnewwmd useful Improvements in Metal Wheels, specification. v l
My invention relates to metal wheels wherein two metal plates or disks arranged side by side and suitably secured together either with or without an interposed rigid central frame or spider are used for the body or spoke part of the wheel and carry at their circumferential edges a metal rim seated upon said disks and wherein a reinforcement'is interposed between the circumferential edges to strengthen the felly p0rtion of the structure.
My invention relates more particularly to the reinforcement and manner of supporting and combining the same with the disks or plates, the object being to simplify the construction, diminish the number of parts required and to afford a practically uniform reinforcement or support for the rim through its whole circumference, so as to avoid the tendency or the liability to the formation of flat spots in the running of the wheel, and which are liable to form in previous constructions wherein isolated reinforcing pieces are employed bridging the edges of the side plates or disks, as in the construction described in the prior application of Maurice Lachman filed November 2nd, 1917, Serial No. 199,828.
Other objects and advantages secured by my improved construction will appear from the subjoined description.
To these ends my invention consists essen-- .tially of a reinforcement comprising an anvnular plate interposed between the edges of the disks and supported between them,
said annular plate having a radially projecting continuous rib engaging the inner surface of the rim.
The invention further consists in the continuous annular reinforcement for the rim supported upon circumferential ledges near the edge of the disks and welded to sald ledges.
My invention also consists 1n the detalls of construction as more particularly hereinafter described and then specified in the claims.
Specification of Letters Patent.
ventiOn, a portion of one of which the following is a METAL WHEEL.
Fig. 2 1s a vertical section on the line 2---2 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 3 3 Fig. 1. f
1f indicates the side plates or disks lof the construction each formed near its edge with a 'circumferentialfledge or shoulder as indicated at-2. 3 indicates a metal rim seated upon the circumferential edges 2 of the disks arranged, as shown in the section, side by side and properly secured together or to an interposed rigid frame or spider comprising metal bars or spokes of the manner described in the prior application above referred to. The inner edges of said disks may be turned inward to form the barrel or por- Patented May 24, 1921. 'i llnppiitmfm fnea June 3, 191s. 'serial no. 301,458.
tion of the barrel of the hub structure and metal hub plates or fianges 6 may be also used, suitable fastening bolts being passed through said strengthening hub flanges, all as described in the prior application.
4 indicates spokes `of the rigid central frame or spider which it is desirable to employ for strength. These, as described in the prior application above referred to, consist preferably of anged-metal'bars the fianges of which afford a bearing for the side plates. Said flanged metal'bars may be, as indicated, channel bars or other desired shape. These anged metal spoke members of thestructure preferably seat at their inner ends upon the hub part and at their outer ends engage the inner surface of a circumferential reinforcing plate 5. The side plates may be spot welded to the bars at any desired number of points as also described inthe prior Azi-.pplication above rekferred to.
My present Ainvention relates particularly to the feature of the annular reinforcing plate 5 which, as shown, is interposed between the disks near their circumferential edge and is itself supported upon the ledges or shoulders 2. Said reinforcing plate 5 has preferably the circumferential r1bor projection 5 at or near its center engaging the inner surface of the rim 3, thereby affording a continuous support for the intermediate prises a series of separate reinforcing plates extending across from one disk to the other in the spaces between the spokes 4, so that there is a liability to the formation of fiat spots in the rim at points between the points of support aorded by the reinforcement. The construction provided by my present invention avoids this difculty. In the previous construction the extreme edges of the disks are turned over into aflange upon which the rim rests but in my present invention the rim rests directly upon the edges and an open space is left through which the annular reinforcement 5 may be spot welded to the ledges 2, if desired, to fasten them together and hold the parts against relative displacement circumferentially.
When the rigid bar metal spoke structure is employed it is obvious that the same may take many different forms other than that specifically described without departing from my lnvention.
What I claim as my invention' is 1. In a wheel of the character described, the combination of a pair of side disks or plates provided with offsets or ledges at their circumferential edges, a rimseated upon the edges and a reinforcementof hol low cylindrical form seated upon said edgesl and having a radially projecting continuous s0 rib engaging the inner surface of the rim.
2. In a metal wheel of thecharacter described the vcombination with a pair .of side plates having outwardly projected flanges near `their circumference, a reinforcement of hollow cylindrical form seated upon said edges and welded thereto anda rim seated seated upon the v said ledges and a rigid spoke member engaging the inner surface of said annular reinforcement.
