WASHING-MACHINE.
To all whom itmag concern:
Be it known that I, ORLAL. HUFFMAN, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Weatherford, in the countyof ParkrQahd State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'Washing Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in washing machines and has relation more particularly to an operating mechanism for a dolly comprised therein, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved mechanism of this general character wherein the dollyIis caused to alternately rotate in reverse direction. 1
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved mechanism .of this general character embodying adriven shaft having universal movement independently of its rotation and which shaft ;.is provided 'witha pinion coacting with the opposite faces of a rack carried by a member supported for reciprocatory movement wherein the rotation of said shaft imparts reciprocation to the member, together with means for operatively connectingthe lubricating member with a dolly of a washing machine or other rotary member for .supporting rotation thereto alternately in reverse direction.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved washing machine whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view partly in elevation and partly in section of the structure disclosed in Fig. 1, the line of section Specification of LettersPatent. Patented M 17 1921 Ap lication filed JanuaryZ'Y, 1920. serial no; 354,4s2.
being substantially atright angles to the line of section in Fig.1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawlngs, ,T denotes a tub of desired dimension andconfigurationfand which is herein disclosed as mounted upon .a table A or other supporting structure. Extending within the upper portion of the table T and supported for rotary movement is a dolly D. Coacting with the dolly D is a rack 1 capable ofreciprocatory movement. Pivotally engaged with one end of the rack 1 is an end portion. of a link 2. The opposite end portion of the link 2 is pivotally engaged with a vertically disposed rock lever 3. herein disclosed as supported intermediate its length by a bracket 4 carried by the side wall of'the tub T.
'Pivotally engaged with the lower end portion of the lever 3 is a link 5 extending inwardly and below the tub T and said link is also pivotally engaged with an extension or arm 6 carried by anend portionof a plate 7 In the present embodiment of my invention, the plate 7 has itsflat faces vertically disposed and is slidably supported in the guides 8, carried by the plate 9 depend- '1 ing from the table or support A. Extending outwardly from a faceof theplate 7 is a plurality of pins or fingers, 10 equidistantly spaced "1n a'direction longitudinally of the plate 7 and which pins orvfingers 10 provide a rack with which coac ts' from below and portion of the shaft 12 is a roller bearing or sleeve 16. .The portion of the shaft in close proximity to the pinion 11 is disposed through a slot 17 having its longitudinal axis perpendicularly related to the rack as afforded by the pins or fingers 10.
In the present embodiment of my invention, the slot 17 is produced in an arm or bracket 18 depending from the table or support A. B this means, it will be perceived that the s aft 12 is held by the arm or bracket 18 against lateral movement in a direction longitudinally of the rack carried by the plate 7 but is capable of limited swinging movement lengthwise of the slot 17. When the shaft 12 is in its lowermost position, the pinion 11 meshes or coacts with the rack; or pins 10 from below so that as the shaft 12 rotates, the plate 7 is-caused to mesh in one direction and which movement through the 'instrumentality of the lever 3 imparts rotary movement to the dolly D in one direction.
Adjacent each'end of the plate '7 are the substantially semicircular trackways l9 having their bows disposed in a direction away from the fingers or pins 10. These track- 'ways, however, arepositioned in such proximity to the endpins or fingers 10 to be engaged by the roller hearing or sleeve'16. so that the shaft 12 will be elevated to cause the'pinion 11 to mesh with the fingers or pins 10 from above when theplate reaches the end of its stroke in one direction or to permit the shaft 12 to drop to engage the pins or fingers 10 from below when the plate 7 reaches the end of its stroke in the opposite direction. By this means, it will be readily seen that the reciprocation ofthe plate 7 results in the dolly D or other rotatable member to be alternately rotated in opposite direction.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that awashingmachine constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it .may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof, and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:-
In combination with a body, means for supporting said body at an elevation, a
vertically disposed rotatable member carried by said body and extending thereabove, a vertically disposed rock lever supported by the body to one side thereof, a rack slidably ried by: said second plate adjacent the end pins, a bracket depending fromthe bottom of the body and provided with a vertically disposed slot, a rotatable and vertically oscillating shaft extending through the slot of the bracket, a pinion'carried by the shaft for engagement with the pins, said shaft extending beyond the pinion for contact with the arcuate guide members, whereby said pinion engages the pins from above and below, and a link connecting the second named plate and the lower end portion ofthe lever so that the reciprocation of the plateby the pinion 11 rocks the lever.
In testimony whereofI hereunto affix my signature.
