ELECTRICAL FITTING CONNECTION.
APPLICATION FILED OCT-25,19.

Inventor I AtmrZ/g UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN AN'DREW MCKA Y, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO GENERAL ELECTRIl IG COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
ELECTRICAL FITTING CoNNEoTIoN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 17, 1921.
Application filed October 25, 1919. Serial No. 333,386.
carried by a canopy and for this purpose the canopy is provided with special members to afford pivotal supporting means for the terminal member.
The main object and feature of the present invention is to admit of the use of standard fixtures, without necessity of alteration in connection with the invention of said Letters Patent. To this end, the bushing of the canopy is employed, the leads being passed through it as a support for the mounting of the pivotally supported terminal member.
Other features of the invention will appear as the specification proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings the inven tion is shown in a concrete and preferred form, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view, on line 1-1 of Fig. 2, through a canopy and electrical fitting connection embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1, looking in the direction of arrow of Fig. 1, the canopy being broken away and its outline indicated in dotted lines.
Fig. 3 is a detail View, partly broken away, of the mounting for the terminal member with the latter indicated in dotted lines.
The mounting consists of two jaws 1 that are in superposed relation and connected by means of a pivot 2 so that they will open or close in a manner similar to that of a pair of scissors. Each jaw is provided with an angularly extending lug 3 having an aperture 4. It will be seen that, when the jaws are swung into a iven position, apertures 4c, which constitute earings for the terminal member 5, will be in alinement and the terminal 6 will enter said aperture. 7 indicates an opening in each jaw and these openings are brought into register when the bearings for the pivotally supported terminal member are in alinement. 8 is a canopy of standard construction having a bushing or hollow support 9. This bushing is introduced through openings 7, there 1 by preventing jaws 1 from swinging on pivot 2. 10 is a lock nut for holding the mount on the hollow support. 11 indicates flexible connections, from the terminal member, that extend through bushing 9 of the canopy to the branches of an illuminating appliance as for instance a wall-bracket.
An advantage of the construction shown resides in the fact that when the mounting is removed from the support, the pivotally supported terminal member may be quickly removed from the mounting by opening of the jaws. I have also found that the scissors feature of the device can be omitted and a one part device with arms forced into the shell, but the advantages are obviously with the scissors construction.
I claim:
1. An electrical fitting comprising: a mounting for a terminal member consisting of two superposed and pivotally connected jaws, an angularly extending lug carried by each jaw, said lu 5 having bearings that are in alinement wit each other when the jaws are swung into a given position, and a terminal member pivotally and removably supported in said bearings.
2. An electrical fitting comprising: a mounting for a terminal member consisting of two superposed and pivotally connected jaws, an angularly extending lug carried by each jaw, said lugs having bearings that are in alinement with each other when the jaws are swun into a iven osition and a ter- I minal member pivotally and removably supported in said bearings, and means for preventing the jaws from swinging on their pivot.
3. An electrical fitting comprising: a
mounting fora terminal member consisting of two superposed and pivotally connected jaws, an angularly extending lug carried by 7 each jaw, said lugs having bearings that are in alinement with each other when the jaws are swung into a given position, and said jaws having openings that are in register when the bearings are brought into alinement, a fixture support extending through the registered openings, means for securing the jaws to the support, and a terminal member pivotally supported in said bearin s.
An electrical fitting comprising: a mounting for a terminal member consisting of two superposed and pivotally connected jaws, an angularly extending lug carried by each jaw, said lugs having bearings that are in alinement with each other when the jaws are swung into a given position and said jaws havlng openings that are in register when the bearings are brought into alinement, a fixture support extending through the registered openings, means for securing the jaws to the support, a terminal member pivotally supported in said bearings, and a flexible connection extending from the terminal member throu h the fixture support.
6. An electrical fitting comprising: a terminal member, a mounting having arms pivotally connected and carrying angularly extending lugs, each lug having bearings adapted to pivotally support the terminal member.
Signed at New York city in the county of New York and State of New York, this 22 day of October, 1919.
