UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM R. AKERS AND JAMES E. JOHNSON, OF MALCOLM, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT m HEATlNG-STOVES.
Specification forming part ofrLetters Patent No. 137,818, dated April 15, 1873; application filed February 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that We, WILLIAM R. AKERs and JAMES E. JoHNsoN, of Malcolm, in the county of Poweshiek and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Air-Heating Stove, of which the following is a specificatiOn:
Our invention consists in the arrangement of an air-chamber at the base of an air-heating-stove, to receive the foul air from the room and discharge it into the smoke-chamber to be carried off with the smoke, so as to maintain a purer atmosphere in the room and regulate the draft, the construction of the Whole being simple and cheap, and calculated to be very efficient and serviceable.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of our improved stove taken on the line was of the other figures. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of Fig. 1 taken on the line y y. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 2 z, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on the line 20 to.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A and B represent the airchambers in the base of the stove. They are separated from the ash-pit O by the" partition D, and from each other by the partition E. F is the inletpassage for cold air from the exterior of the building into the chamber A. G is the inlet to chamber B from the room. H is a damper to regulate the draft. I is a horizontal partition between the chambers A B and the combustion-chamber K. Dis the fire-pot. M is a system of tubes surrounding the fire-pot, and conducting the cold air from chamber A up through the combustionchamber K, to be heated, and discharging it into hot-,air chamber, N, which is separated from the combustion-chamber by the horizontal partition 0. It is also separated from the smoke-chamber P above by a horizontal partition, Q. From the chamber N the air is conducted by another system of tubes, B, into the distributing-chamber S, to be conducted therefrom to the rooms to be heated by tubes '1, U, &c. The tube V extends from the ventilating and draft chamber B up through the combustion-chamber K and hot-air chamberi N to the smoke-chamber P to discharge the foul air from the room therein and regulate the draft thereby. W is a smoke-flue passing from the combustion-chamber Kto the smoke chamber 1?, and X is the flue leading therefrom to the chimney. The upper system of tubes R is arranged so that the currents from the lower tubes are deflected considerably, and the air is retained a little in the chamber N and thus heated more than if it passed direct from the lower to the upper tubes.
The construction is very simple and cheap, and the arrangement is adapted to be very efficient for heating and for ventilating the room containing the stove.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The arrangement of the air-chamber B, the tube V, fire-chamber R, hot-air chamber N, and smoke-chamber P, substantially as specified.
WILLIAM B. AKERS. JAMES E. JOHNSON.
