Description

T WISHART. Connecting-Posts fqr Electrical Apparatus No.137,810. PatentedApril15,1873.
AM PHOTD-LITHUGRAPHIC C0. MY.( OSBUIPNEZS PROCESS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS WISHART, OF CLAYTON, DELAWARE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO SOLOMON J. GARMAN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CONNECTING-POSTS FOR ELECTRICAL APPARATUS- I Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,810, dated April 15, 1873 application filed March 3, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS WVISHART, of the town of Clayton, county of Kent and State of Delaware, have invented a new and Improved Binding-Post for Connecting Telegraph -Wires to various Telegraph -Instruments, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 is an elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on 00 41; of Fig. 1.
.Fig. 3 is a section on line y y, Fig. 2.
My invention consists in a peculiar connecting-post for wires forming part of an electrical circuit, as more fully hereinafter de-. scribed and claimed.
This connecting-post, as I purpose to call it, is a substitute for what has been known heretofore as a connecting or binding screw.
The post A (see drawing) is hollowed out interiorly so as to form a chamber extending nearly, to its base. Through the side of the chamber near the top are the perforations G G, opposite to each other. Within this chamber is fitted, so as to slide easily, the plug F, having a head, D, for ease of manipulation;
the motion of the plug being limited by the pin a, which takes in a groove, d, out upon one side of the plug. Through this plug F a hole, .0, is 'made, so as to register with the holes 0 (J whenever the plug is pressed down. Within the chamber and underneath the plug is fixed the spring B, which acts to force the plug out of the chamber as far as is allowed by the stop a.
The operation of this device is as follows: Whenever it is desired to connect a wire with any instrument by means of the post, the plug is pressed down and the wire passed through the holes 0 G, which then register. The plug being released the spring forces it up, and the wire is thereby griped and securely held.
Having thus described my invention, I claim The connecting-post for electrical instru' ments, formed by the combination of a chambered post, an interior plug, and a spring, substantially as described. a
