Be it known that I, GLENN I-I. DRAnnN- s'ro'rr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vooster,fin the county of Wayne and State'of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Sawing and Boring Device, of which the following is a specification. l
My invention relates-to devices for-cutting openings'in floors and partitins 1 in buildings, and its principal object is to provide simple and efhcient means for making suitable openings in floors and partitions to admit electric wires therein for illuminating and other purposes; and it consists in mounting an electric motor upon a slidable base in combination` with a circular saw and supporting frame geared directly to said motor, and operable therewith; and it further, consists in lcombining with said motor means for boring through beams and joists in buildings for the admission of electric wires, independently of said sawing mechanism-all as hereinafter appended claims. My invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters and figures of reference indicate like parts.
Referring thereto, Figure 1 is a side view of a motor sawing and boring device embodying my invention, showing the saw mechanism in elevated position. Fig. 2 is a similarside view showing the saw mechanism in operative position, and also the attachment for boring.
Fig. 3V is a view ofthe same inverted, showing the gear me'chanism more distinctly. In the drawings, A is a motor, simiv lar to such as are in common use, and requires no further description. It is pivotally mounted on a base B, having anti-friction rollers b Z) b b at its ends (best shown in Fig. 3) the pivoted connection is preferably made by means of a pivot rod 13 passed laterally through the sides of the base B, at a point near the bottom of one end of the motor, whereby the weight of the mechanism is nearly evenly divided endwise. A flange 14 at the bottom of the motor and on each side thereof adjacent to the sides of the base affords means for pivotally securing the motor between the sidesl of said base so as to tilt endwise a limited distance freely. A suitable gear wheel 8, mounted between said arms, is driven by the motor pinion 7, andis adapted to bethrown out. of and into able on a standard K secured to said frame, in the usual and well known way of changing gear by lateral shift of the wheel 8 on the shaft 12. 'Ihe latter communicates motion to the saw by the bevel gear wheels 11, mounted at the ends of said arms 10, as best shown in Fig. 3. A thin metal disk D is mounted directly in the path of and at the rear of the saw C, and normally projects downwardly a limited dista-nce to followV said path, and aid the travel of the saw. It is operable a short distance vertically through a support 17, and reciprocates therein by means of a vertical shaft and spiral spring S, suitable to the depth of the cut of the saw, which is regulated by means of a hand lever H pivotally mounted at the opposite end of the base, and provided with a slidable notched sleeve 5, adapted to engage a stud 16 providing laterally from the rear. A pair of arms 15 15 extend rearwardly and upwardly from the rear end of the motor, and are united at their upper ends by a cross bar 3 which serves as a hand hold to guide the direction of the saw, and tilt it upon the pivot rod 13, as aforesaid.
In addition to the saw mechanism, I provide convenient means for boring holes through joists and beams of buildings by adapting the opposite end of the motor to actuate a fiexible rotary shaft Gr, having at itsouter end a chuck I to` hold and actuate a suitable boring bit J, in the usual and well known way. Said flexible shaft is detachably secured to the extended end of a shaft carrying a worm gear wheel E mounted between the upright arms F, and driven by the worm gear pinion 4, which`is secured on the extended endyof the motor shaft, in the usual way of connecting worm gears. Said rotary flexible shaft may be readily detached, when not in use, and provision may be made for throwing the operative mechanism 'therefor out of gear, if desired, but this is not essential, and therefore not shown herein.
A suitable handle 2 may be secured on the top of the motor as a convenience for handling the device, and placing it in operagear by a hand lever-9 opertive position, and to aid in guiding the direction of the saw.
A small motor, similar to those in common use, of about one half horse power, or less, may be readily adapted to and mounted to actuate said saw and boring mechanisms independently of each other, as stated.
I-do not limit my claims to mere matter of form, and changes of parts may be made without departing Jfrom the scope of my invention; but having thus' fully described my invention, what I claim as new-'and desire to secure by Letters Patent isv l. In a device of the character described,
in combination, a slidable base, a motor.
mounted to swing endwise on said base, a circular saw attached to said motor, and driven by mechanism intermediate the same,
and a guidingdisk mounted to travel in the path of said saw, substantially as set forth. 2. In a device of the character described, in combination, a slidable base, a motor hinged thereon to swing endwis'e a limited distance, a circular saw mounted between arms secured to one end of the motor, a rotary flexible shaft having a boring tool at its outer end, and a worm gear at the other end of said motor arranged to drive said shaft, and means for driving said saw and said boring tool independently.
