Abstract

Tree-felling. - Consists in the general construction of a portable machine provided with a rotary tool, such as a circular saw for felling trees, or a drill or milling-cutter for working metals. The saw a or other tool is connected by bevel-gearing to a longitudinal shaft 27 mounted in a tube 28 projecting from a gear-case 29 through which a transverse shaft 14 extends; this shaft drives the shaft 27 through bevel-gearing. To permit the saw to be rocked about the shaft 27, the shaft 14 is mounted in a semicircular frame 16 which is provided with rack-teeth whereby it can be rocked as shown in Fig. 2 by a segmental pinion 17 operated by a hand-lever 19. An electric-motor 10 which drives the shaft 14 through chain-gearing is mounted similarly so as to rock simultaneously with the shaft 14. To enable the saw to be raised and lowered by rocking it about the shaft 14, it is suspended by a rod 35 from a bracket 38 in which a pinion is mounted in gear with a segmental rack 39 projecting at right-angles from the rack 16; the pinion is operated to adjust the height of the saw by a hand-wheel 40. Lateral movement of the saw is provided for by making the gear-case 29 rotable about a vertical axis. The apparatus is carried by a vehicle 1 mounted on spiked wheels 2 adapted to be turned independently to adjust the vehicle by hand-operated chain-gearing 6, 7. When in position, the working end of the vehicle is supported on two posts 42 provided with spiked bases 43. Racks on the upper ends of the posts gear with pinions 44 operable by hand-wheels 46 to adjust the tilt of the vehicle.
