TRUCK-EQUALIZING RANGEMENT.
maratea,
specification of Lettere Patent.
Patented May 1h11, 1921i.
1'0 all whom. it my concern Be it known that 1, JOHN A. Lampara, a citizen ot the United States, residin at Chicago, in the county of Cool: and tate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in '.llruclr-lilqualizingproved and whereby shocks are taken byy the bolster and side frame instead of by thev equalizing levers and their connections tothe side frame. v
rllhese and other objects are accomplished by means of the arrangement disclosed on the accompanying sheet of drawings, 1n which- Figure 1 is a ragmenta side elevation of a railway car truck em odying my 1nvention; and,
lEig. 2 is a detail sectional view taken in the plane of line 2-2 of liig. 1.
rlhe various novel features of the 1nvention will be apparent from thefollowingdescription and drawings and will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the gures ot the drawings, it ywill be noted that I have disclosed my invention in' connection with a six-wheel truck having a side frame 10 with en d journal box openings 11 and a middle journal box opening 12, and bolster openings 13 intermediate said journal box openings for the rece tion of the four le s of a bolster.
ounted in each of t e bolster openings 13 is a bolster or bolster member 14 which lhas a slight amount of clearance with respect to the side frame and is movable vertically therein and rests upon an intermedi-k ate portion. of an equalizing lever 15, one end of which is operatively connected with the equalizing mechanism associated with the intermediate journal box 16. 'llhe opposite end of each equalizing lever turns upwardly and 1s provided with a seat 17 which receives the lower rod 18 of a closed or looped hanger 19, the upper end of which is provided with an eye portion 2Q for pivotally receiving a pin 21 extending between side walls 22 and 23 of the side frame 10.
By means of this connection between the side trame and the equalizing levers the side frame itself is simplified, especiall from lthe production point of view, and 1t also permits the lowering of the outer end of each equalizing lever and provides an increased amount of clearance between the inner ends of the equalizing levers and the springs associated with the intermediate journal box. Furthermore, by having the equalizing levers suspended on the hangers 19 from the side frame 10 the equalizing levers are permitted to swing 'a limited amount lengthwise of the truck, so that the force ot shocks occasioned by bringing the car to rest or starting same is transmitted through the holsters to the sides of the bolster pockets in the frame, instead of direct to the hangers or hanger pins. lin this manner the life of the arts is increased and the design simpli ed.
1t is my intention to cover all modifications of the invention falling within the spirit and scope ot the following claims.v
ll claim:
1. lin arailway cartruck, the combination of a side frame having a bolster opening, an equalizing lever, a bolster mounted within said opening vand mounted directly on said equalizing lever, and a hanger pivoted to said side frame and supporting said equalizing lever whereby the latter may have a lengthwise movement with respect to the side frame and whereby thrusts are taken directly by the bolster and said frame.
ln a railway car truck the combination of .a side frame having a bolster opening, an equalizing lever mounted therebelow, a bolster movably mounted in said bolster opening and directly carried by said equalizing lever, and a hanger pivoted to said side trame and supporting one end ot said equalizing lever whereby said equalizing lever may' move lengthwise with respect to the side frame iermitting'shocks be equalizing 'lever whereby lengthwise diubsorbed by the bovster and iside frame. rected operating shocks may be absorbed'by 3.
