Be it known that l, JOHN A. LAMONT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Truck Arrangements, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a railway truck arrangement.
One object of the invention is to simplify and improve journal box constructions and their cooperative association with side) frames to produce an eiicient arrangement. Another object is to provide a truck side :trame and journal box with simple and improved spring-receiving portions.
A further object is to provide a simple and eiiicient truck arrangement` including a truck side frame, journal box and springs which coperate 1n an improved manner to meet various requirements for successful commercial use.
These and other objects are accomplished by means of the arrangement disclosed on the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a railway car truck, parts being in section, embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of my improved journal box showing a wearing band secured thereto; and
Fig; 3 is a perspective view of the wearing band which is interposed between the journal box and side frame.
The various novel features of my invention will be apparent from the following description and drawings and will be particularlyfpointed out in the appendedclaims.
Re erring to the figures of the drawings, it will be noted that my invention is illustrated in connection with a railway car truck including a truck side frame 10 having a plurality of spring pockets 11 which coperate with laterally extending bracket portions 12 of a journal box 13 for receiving concentrically arranged coil springs 14 and 15, the former being the heavier springs and surroundin the latter relatiyely light coil springs. ach spring pocket of the side trame is formed by a depending closed wall the depth of whlclivaries, the minimum depth being at the outer side as shown at 16 and the greatest depth being shown at 17. The inner walls 17 of the spring pockets 11 serve as journal box guides for guiding the journal box 13 in its relative vertical movements with respect to the side frame 10,l For reducing the wear of the relatively moving parts, a hardened steel band 18 is slipped 60 over the main portion 19 of the journal box and extends down the sides thereof and then extends laterally outwardly over the bracket portion 17 of the journal box to which said wearing plate is secured by means of rivets 20. This Wearing plate 18 is provided with a slot 21 which receives the top strengthening rib 22 of the journal box whereby the wearing plate is held in a given position with respect to the journal box. rlhe vertical portions of the spring wearing plate 18 are interposed between the relatively moving spring pocket walls 17 and the journal box. The side frame has depending lugs 21 each of which fits within the upper end of 7E its associated light coil spring 15 and forms means for retaining the springs in a given position within said box. The upper head of each 'of the rivets 20 extends upwardly a slight distance within the .inner coil spring 80 15 and as a result thereof tends to center the springs onI the brackets 12. The coil springs 14 and 15 are substantially inclosed within the side frame pockets 11 and by the oppositely arranged side anges 23 of the journal box, said anges 23 increasing in height from their outer extremities toward the middle of the 'journal box. These strengthening flanges 23 also serveV to retaln the relative lateral position of the journal box with respect to the side frame as a result of the overlapping association of said journal box side iianges 23 and adjacent portions of the side frame.. It is my intension to cover all modifications of the invention falling within the spirit and scope of the following claims.

In a railway'car truck, the combination of a side frame havingl depending spring pockets, a journal box aving laterally extending brackets and side walls connecting same, the walls of said spring pockets formv ing guides for said journal box, and sprmgs resting in said pockets and mounted upon said 'ournal box brackets.
5. n a railway car truck, the combination of a truck side frame having spring pockets, a journal box having laterally extending brackets and side flanges, said flanges extending over the journal receiving portion of the box, and springs mounted in said pocketsand resting upon said' journal box brackets and being substantially inclosed within said pockets and journal box flanges.
6. In a railway car truck, a journal box having a main j ournal-receiving portion and laterally extending brackets, and a wearing plate capping said box and covering said laterally extending bracket portions.
7 In a railway car truck, a journal box v having laterally extending brackets with side walls extending over the journal receiving portion for increasing the load ca acity of said bo'x and limiting movement o 'an associated side frame in one direction.
8. In`a railway car truck, a journal box having latltlly extending brackets with side walls e ending over the journal receiving portion for increasing the load capacity of said box and limiting movement of an associated side frame in one direction, and reinforcing means extending below thejournal receiving portion of the box and connecting said brackets.
