citizen of the United States, residing at Chi cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'Side Frames and .l ournal-Boxes, of which thefollowing is a specification.
rllhis invention relates to associated truck side frames and journal boxes.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple, efficientand durable journal box construction particularly adapted for use in connection with articulated truck side frames.
Another object is to provide a simple and improved connection between truck side frames and journal boxes.
These and other objects are accomplished by means of the arrangements disclosed on the accompanying sheets of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a railway car truck embodying my invention;
Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views taken, respectively, along the planes of lines 2 2 and 3 3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side elevation of a car truck embodying a modification of my invention; and,
Fig, 5 is a sectional viewtaken in the plane of line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
The various novel features of my invention will be apparent from the following description and drawings and will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
I have disclosed my invention in connection with an articulated truck side frame having a rigid side frame member 10 and a flexible side' frame member 11, which are telescopically arranged, the inner end of said frame member 11 extending between the side walls 12 and 13 of the rigid side frame member 10. As shown, the associated journal box 14 is more directly connected to the rigid side frame member 10 than it is to the other side frame member 11. However, the journal box 14, which is the intermediate journal box on a six-wheel truck, is operatively connected to both articulated side frame members 10 and 11.
This journal box includes a main body portion 15, the interior of which is of standard Master Car Builders design, there being a brass 16 engaging the journal 17 and wedge 18 coperating with the brass and with the upper interior wall of the journal box. Integrally formed with the main portion l5 of the journal box and located on opposite sides thereof, are two pocket members 16 and 17, each having concentrically arranged pockets 18 and 19 of different diameters, the smaller one 18 being for the reception of a relatively light coiled spring 20, and the other pocket 19 being for the reception of a relatively heavy coiled spring 21, 'the lower end of which rests upon a shoulder 22 formed between the two pockets 18 and 19. The heavy coiled spring 21 surrounds the light coiled spring, and', as shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, is engaged by a flange 23 formed on an openended thimble member 24 through which extjends a forged bolt 25the latter also extending downwardly within the coiled springs 20 and 21 and through an opening 26 in the end of the pocket member 17. The upper end of the bolt 25 is pivotally connected to the inner end lof the flexible vframe member 11 by a pin 27, said forged bolt preferably having a portion 28 projecting upwardly between walls of the member 11. The pin 27 forms a pivotal connection whereby the flexible side frame member 11 may pivot vertically about a horizontal axis with respect to the fixed side frame member 10and by virtue of the fact that the forged bolt 25 may pivot Aabout a vertical axis within the thimble member 24, the side frame members 10 and 11 may have a relative horizontal pivotal action, in this way providing for track curvatures, both horizontal and vertical. To lock the side frame members 10 and 11 to each other, and kalso the journal box to the side frame members, a key 29 is passed through an aperture in the lower end ofthe forged bolt 25. The thimble member 24 lits within an opening 30 in the fixed side frame member 10, and it will be noted that when the flexible side frame member 11 is in its normal position, as shown in Fig. 3, the pin 27 is locked against a withdrawal movement because such pin is confined between the side walls 12 and 18 of the fixed side frame member 10. The tops of thepocket members 17 and 18 preferably are lower than the .main journal box portion 15 to permit the side frame members to be of sufficient depth to meet all strains. The load' is transmitted to both the light and heavy coiled springs Q() and 21 through the thimble member 24, the lower end of such member resting upon the light coiled spring 2O and the iange 23 of said thimble member resting' upon the upper end ot the large coiled spring 21.
In connection with the arrangement at the inner end of the fixed side frame member 10, it will be noted that no separate thimble member isA provided, but that its equivalent is provided in the form of a dowel pin or projection 31 formed integrally with the side frame member, the lower end of said dowel being provided with an opening through which extends a forged bolt 32, which also extends downwardly through the light and heavy coiled springs 33 and 3-1, respectively, and also through an opening in the bottom otl the pocket member 16, the downwardly extending end of the bolt receiving a locking pin 35.
The journal box is provided with a central transversely arranged stii'fening rib 36, which when the springs are depressed a predetermined amount may be received by a recess 3T formed in the side frame member 10, thereby providing sufficient clearance. The journal box is also provided with other transversely arranged ribs 38 and 39 which are designed to suit the bending moments due to loads on the springs. The side walls 12- and 13 of the fixed frame member 1()are received between said ribs B8 and 39, thereby assisting in maintaining the relative positions of the side frame members l() and 11 with respect to the journal box. The dowel pin 31 and thimble` 21 are made of sutiicient depth to cooperate with the associated springs and pocket portions 1G and 17 of the journal box to cooperate therewith and assist in maintaining the side frame mem- 'bers and the journal box in their proper lateral positions.
The modification disclosed in Figs. 4 and 5 is the same as the arrangement shown in the other figures of the drawing with the exception that the tlrimble o r dowel pin 40 is formed integrally with the fixed side frame member l() instead of being in a separate piece. the side frame member 1() accordingly bearing directly upon the large coiled spring 21.
By means of this journal box and spring arrangement` it is possible to eliminate the usual pedestal jaw construction and the springs over the journal boxes used heretofore.
There may be various modifications of my invention, and it is my intention to cover all such modifications which do not involve a departure from the spirit and scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a railway car truck, the combination of an articulated side frame, a journal box, and means connecting said journal box to the articulated side frame members and also pivotally connecting the latter.
2. In a railway car truck, the combination of an articulated side frame, a journal box, means connecting said journal box to the articulated side frame members and also said members to each other.l
8. In a railway car truck. the combination of an articulated side frame, a journal box, and means connecting said journal box and articulated side frame members whereby the latter may have relative motions in a plurality of directions.
4. In a railway car truck, the combination of a Side frame. a journal box` anda member pivotally connected to said side frame and connected to said journal box for securing same in place.
o. In a railway car truck, the combination of a side frame, a journal box, and a member pivotally connected to said side frame permitting a horizontal swinging movement of same and extending through said journal box and releasably locked thereto.
G. In a rail 'ay car truck, the combination of an articulated side frame, a journal box, and a member connected to one of the side frame members for connecting same and connected to said journal box for securing same in place. j
7. In a railway car truck, the combination ot' an articulated side frame, a journal box, and a member pivotally connected to one of said side frame members and operatively connected to said journal box for securing same in place.
8. In a railway car truck, the combination of an articulated side frame, a member pivotally connected to one of the side frame members within the confines of the other side frame member and being operativelyconnected to an associated journal box. y 9. In a railway car truck, the combination of a side frame including overlapping ar-` ticulated members, a journal box having spring pockets, springs mounted therein, and means whereby the load impressed upon said articulated side frame members is transmitted to said springs.
