UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEO. IV. BISHUP, OF BROOKLYN, NEWv YORK.
MARBLE-SAWING MACHINE.
Speccation of Letters Patent No. 13,778, dated November 13, 1855.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE IV. Bi'sHUr, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Machine for Sawing Marble Blocks in Polygonal Taper Form; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this speciiication, in which Figure 1, is a side view of my improvement. Fig. 2, is a back view of ditto. Fig. 3, is a plan or top view of ditto. Fig. Al, is a detached vertical longitudinal section of the vibrating lever by which motion is given the saws.

The nature of my invention consists in the application to stone sawing machines of an adjustable vibrating lever, arranged as will be presently shown, so that it may be raised or lowered to correspond with the height of the saws.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A, represents a bed-plate to the center of which an upturned rectangular frame B, is att-ached.
C, C, represents the rectangular frames which are placed upon the bed plate A, one at each side of the frame, B. The upper ends of the frames C, C are connected to the upper part of the frame, B, by cross pieces a, the ends of which have tenons upon them which tit loosely in mortises in the top pieces of the frames, the tenons being secured in the mortises by pins o. The lower parts of the frames O, O, have guides c, attached to them, said guides resting upon therbed plate A, and worln'ng in slots or recesses cut in the under side of planks, between the frames, see dotted lines, Fig. 2. The cross pieces a, are slotted and have pendents cl, fitted in them, a pulley c, being' litted in the lower end of each pendent.
D, Dare shafts, the inner ends of which are pointed or have very small journals, and work in bearings f, at the center of the top piece of the frame B, the bearing being sufficiently large to allow the inner-journals of the shafts some play. The outer journals g, of the shafts D, pass through slots at the center of the top pieces O, O. These slots are made rather long so that the journals g,
may be adjusted thereon farther forward or backward by means of keys or wedges h.
E are vertical guide bars, the upper ends of which have rods e' attached to them, said rods passing through the top pieces of the frames O, and into the top piece of the frame B. There are two guide bars E to each frame C, as shown in Fig. 3, and two attachedto each side of the top piece of the frame B. The rods z', which pass through the top pieces of the frames C, O, have screw threads cut on them and thumb nuts j, are fitted thereon so that the guide bars which are attached to these rods may by turning the rods j, be moved farther in or out from the frames O. The lower parts of the guide bars also have similar rods z', attached to them, which rods pass through center pieces i", of the frames.
F, F, are saw sashes, to the upper ends of which ropes or chains K, are attached. rThe sashes are placed between the guide bars E, and the ropes or chains 7c, pass over the pulleys c, at the lower ends of t-he pendents el. The ends of the ropes or chains are attached to the shafts D, D'.
The ropes or chains hold up the sashes F,
and the sashes may be raised and lowered whendesired, by turning the shafts D. The shafts are turned by ropes or chains Z, which pass around pulleys m, on the outer ends of the journals g, and also around pulleys a, on the outer sides of the frames O, the pulleys a, being turned by cranes 0. To the lower ends of the saw sashes F, F, saws G are attached.
The lower part of the frames C, C, have plates p, attached to them, one at each end and set screws g, pass through the plates and into the bed plates A, securing the lower ends of said frames to the bed plate.
To one end of the bed plate A, a vertical screw rod r, is attached, on which a tube s, having an internal screw thread cut in it, works. The lower part of the screw rod r, has a shoulder t, upon it, upon which shoulder the lower part of the tube s rests, the lower part of the tube having a hand wheel u, upon it.
H, is a lever, through the center of which the tube s, passes, the lever being allowed to work freely on the tube, the lever rests upon a shoulder fv, at the lower end of the tube. The ends of the saw sashes F, F, are connected to the ends of the lever H, by connecting rods fw, fw.
Operation: The block of marble shown in red is placed upon the bed plate A, underneath the saws G, and the two saws G, G, are adjusted so as to cut two opposite sides of the block of taper form, by adjusting the frames C. rlhese frames C, are adjusted by loosening the screws Q', and pressing the front ends of the frames C, toward the center stationary frame B, till the frames C form the proper angle with the frame, B. The frames are permitted to do this, because the tenons on the ends of the cross pieces a, fit loosely, or are allowed to turn freely in the mortises in the top pieces of the frames; 'the pulleys e, are also capable of adjustment. And the journals of the shafts D, are also allowed to move in their bearings the keys or wedges 7L, in the outer bearings being withdrawn. lVhen the frames C, lare properly adjusted the keys or wedges 7L, are inserted in the outer bearings of the shafts D. Motion is then given the saw sashes F, by the lever H, which has a vibrating motion communicated to 1t 1n any proper manner.
The saws feed themselves to their work by their own gravity and the lever H may be raised or lowered at any time to suit the heights of the sashes by sirnply turning t-he hand wheel u, on the tube s. lVhen the opposite sides of the block of marble are sawed, the saw sashes F, F, are raised by turning the pulleys u, n, and the block is turned upon the bed plate A, the saws then are lowered and allowed to rest upon the block and the two remaining sides are sawed in a similar manner.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-d Operating the saws of stone sawing machines by placing the lever H, on a tubes, which has an internal screw thread cut in it and is litted on a screw rod r, substantially as shown whereby the lever H, may by turning the tube s, be raised or lowered to suit the height of the sashes, as set forth.
