  • This invention relates more particularly to improvements in photographic printing or composing apparatus of the general nature disclosed in various patents granted to vme and in my pending applications. These apparatus are intended for photographing any desired number of like or different orig inal prints in any required predetermined and registered position and relative arrangement directly upon the sensitized surfaces of press plates which are afterward suitably finished and used in mechanical printing presses for printing in one or more colors.
  • Such apparatus are adapted for various purposes, such for instance as repeating prints-from the same transparent printing plate or negative in a required arrangement on a single sensitized press plate, which, after development, is used for mechanically printing a plurality of impressions; for composing work where it is desired to place different'subjects in a predetermined arrangement on the press plate; and for mak ing press plates for multicolor printing where it ,is necessary to photograph prints in exact register on the different sensitized press plates that are used in presses for printing the different colors.
  • One object of the invention is to produce an improved photographic printing or composing apparatus of this naturev whereby photographic prints can be rapidly made on sensitized press plates in any desired or necessary relative arrangement and position .with' great accuracy and with the minimum labor, and whereby it 1s posslble to secure results and perform kinds of work, hereinafter explained, which are not possible with apparatus heretofore used; other objects o1 the invention are to produce an apparatus of this nature which is of desirable and practical novel construction; also to design the apparatus so that it is possible with it to secure a direct visual register of the image or images on the printing plate andv sensitized plate with those on a layout or register marks; and also to improve and simplify photo-printing or composing apparatus of the kind stated in the respects hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM C. l'lunorrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New. York, have invented a new and usotul Improvement in Photographic-Printing Apparatus, of which the following is-a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to improvements in photographic printing or composing apparatus of the general nature disclosed in various patents granted to vme and in my pending applications. These apparatus are intended for photographing any desired number of like or different orig inal prints in any required predetermined and registered position and relative arrangement directly upon the sensitized surfaces of press plates which are afterward suitably finished and used in mechanical printing presses for printing in one or more colors. Such apparatus are adapted for various purposes, such for instance as repeating prints-from the same transparent printing plate or negative in a required arrangement on a single sensitized press plate, which, after development, is used for mechanically printing a plurality of impressions; for composing work where it is desired to place different'subjects in a predetermined arrangement on the press plate; and for mak ing press plates for multicolor printing where it ,is necessary to photograph prints in exact register on the different sensitized press plates that are used in presses for printing the different colors.
One object of the invention is to produce an improved photographic printing or composing apparatus of this naturev whereby photographic prints can be rapidly made on sensitized press plates in any desired or necessary relative arrangement and position .with' great accuracy and with the minimum labor, and whereby it 1s posslble to secure results and perform kinds of work, hereinafter explained, which are not possible with apparatus heretofore used; other objects o1 the invention are to produce an apparatus of this nature which is of desirable and practical novel construction; also to design the apparatus so that it is possible with it to secure a direct visual register of the image or images on the printing plate andv sensitized plate with those on a layout or register marks; and also to improve and simplify photo-printing or composing apparatus of the kind stated in the respects hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.

The apparatus hereinafter described in detail comprises essentially a support for a sensitized press plate A; a support for holding a transparent photographic negative or sectional elevation printing plate B (hereinafter called the relative movement between the sensitized and printing plates parallel with the sensitized surface to enable the prints to be madein predetermined locations and positions on the sensitizer surface; and means for producing a re A sensitized and printin' plates tow: rd and from each other to p a e the plates into contact for printing d to separate them to enable the necessary relati c adjustments of the plates. The transparent printing plate B is pret erably secured on the glass o transparent upporting plate 26 oi a ate holder 27 which is secured on a head 28 which is rota ably mounted in a circular opening in a supporting plate or carriage carried by the main swinging support 23. The plate holder 27 and rotatable head 28 are preterably constructed and mounted on the carriage 29 and adjusted and secured a dis closed in my copending appli -ation, Serial ll umber 2 l8,623, filed August 6 19i8. As fully explained in salt application, the printing plate B is adapted to be adjustably secured on the holder 27 and this holder is detachably secured in a predetermined centered position on the rotary head 28 which is adapted to be rotated to and secured in any required adjustment on the carriage- 29 by a locking device 30. The head 28 is rotated by a pinion 30 which is turned by a handle 30 and meshes with gcartceth on the rotatable heat. The plate holder carriage 29 is suitably mounted on the swinging support 23 so that it can be adjusted or moved on the swinging support 23 in a direction perpendicular to the f n e of the printing plate for the purpose of SCliLll -f the holder so that different printing plate, regardless of their thickness, can be caused to properly contact with the sensitized surface without deflecting or pressing the sensitized plate out of its intended plane. For instance the carriage 29 i. provided at its upper and lower ends with projecting brackets 31 Fig. 7, adapted to slide in suitable cross guides on the upper and lower arms of the swin u support 23 and the carriage 13 provided at ts four corners with screw-threaded holes in which are adapted to turn adjusting screws which are journaled and held lj'rom endwise movement in suitable bearings on the swinging support. The sensitized plate A is secured on a holder 38 which is preferably detachably secured on an auxiliary carriage 39 which is adapted to be ad usted vertically on a main carriage 4E0 which in turn is adapted to he adjusted horizontally on the swinging supportJ-22. As shown, the inain carriage 40 is arranged toslide between suitable upper "and lower guide ways or tracked-4 and on the swinging support 22 and the auxiliary frame'39 is provided with tubular vertical side rods 46 by which it is arranged to slide vertically on the vertical side rods of the main carriage.

The auxiliary carriage can be adjusted vertically on the main carriageby any suitable outerend witha handle 53 for turning it. Spiral-gears54"splined on this shaft meshmeans, such as two screw shafts 5l suitably qjournaled onthe-main carriage and havioo- Tn screw threads working-1n nuts 51 on the auxiliary carriage. The sensitized plate holder 38 is not secured directly to the vertically movable auxiliary carriage but is secured on a swinging frame 55 which is hinged at one side of the auxiliary CHIl'iitgeO that this frame can be swung horizontally to place the sensitlzed plate holder with the sensitized plate A in operative position betweenthe bars of the auxiliary carriage, as shown in Figs. 1 to 3,-
or to permit the frame 55 withthe plate holder to be swung back away from this operative position.

'59, Figs. 1 and 3 indicate the bolts for the swinging frame 56, and 66 their operating handle. and 61 indicates the operating handle for the' bolts of the other swinging frame 55. Since bothofthe frames 55 and 56 are mounted on the auxiliary carriage 39 they partake in the ver- V tical and horizontal adjustments of this carriage If, therefore, thelayout sheet is placed in operative positionand adjusted to cause the image on the printingplate to reg ister with an image on the layout sheet, and the layout sheet frame 56 is then swung out of the way and the frame'55 carrying the sensitized plate is swung into its place,the printing plate will register with an exactly corresponding portion of the sensitized plate and a print made on the sensitized plate will occupy exactly the same relation as the image on the layout sheet. Thus, the ar 56 is a similar swinging frame hinged to the'opposite side of the aux rangement of the images on the layout sheet can be accurately duplicated on the sensitized plate.
The means before mentioned for moving the swinging support 23 to place the printing plate in contact with the sensitized surface and to remove it to the clearance position are preferably constructed as follows The keepers 25 are mounted to slide in suitable guides 66 on the vertical end bar 22 of the swinging support 22 and are moved by a bar 67 which is arranged to slide in a vertical guide in the bar 22 and is provided with two inclined or oblique portions each engaging in a correspondingly inclined groove in one of the keepers 25. By moving this bar 67 upwardly the keepers are moved outwardly to move the swinging support 23 away from the support 22 to place the printing plate in the clearance position, and by moving the bar 67 downwardly the keepers and the connected swinging support 23 are moved inwardly to place the printing plate in contact with the sensitized plate.
7 The bar 67 is moved by a lever 68 which is suitably fulcrumed on the outer end of the swinging support 22 and has an arm 69 entering a socket in the bar 67. The printing plate support is moved in the same way to place the printing plate into and out of contact with the layout sheet when the latter has been placed in the operative position opposite the printing plate.
The pressure device C for pressing the sensitized plate into intimate contact with the printing plate is mounted on a swinging frame or support 70 which is suitably hinged at one end to the inner end of the main swinging support 22 so that the frame 70 can be swung to carry the pressure device to and from the operative position back of the sensitized plate shown in Figs. 2 and 3. As shown, the frame 70 is hinged to brackets 71 projecting from the upper and lower bearing sleeves of the support 22. The frame 70 can be secured for holding the pressure device stationary in this posi tion by any suitable means, such as vertical bolts 72, Fig. 1, slidably mounted on the frame 70 and adapted to enter keepers 7 3 at the top and bottom of the main support 22. The bolts 72 can be similar to the other locking bolts described and similarly operated by a handle 74. When the swinging frame 70 for the pressure device is secured in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the pressure block 75 or head at the inner end of the pressure device can be moved on the frame toward and from the sensitized plate for pressing it against the printing plate and to release the sensitized plate in any suitable manner. As shown, the pressure block 75 is carried by a stem or shaft 76 which is adapted to slide and turn in a suitable bearing 77 on the frame 70 and is moved by a screw 78 swiveled in the outer end of the shaft 76 and engaging a nut secured to the swinging frame 70. This screw is turned by a wheel 79 at its outer end. The pressure block is preferably mounted on the supporting shaft 76 so that it can be adjusted radially relative to the axis of the shaft 76 and can also be rotatably adjusted either about the axis of the shaft 76 or about an axis eccentric thereto for the purpose of placing the pressure block in any angular position and radial location that may be required by reason of the position of the printing plate with which it is being used. In the construction shown, see Fig. 8, the pressure block 75 is removably secured on a cylindrical stud 80 by a clamping ring 81 which permits the block to be turned and secured in any desired angular position on the stud. This stud projects from a head or block 82 which is adjusted radially on a head 83 at the inner end of the shaft 76 by suitable means, such as a screw 84 journaled in the head 82 and engaging a toothed rack 85 on the head 83. The shaft 76 is also adapted to be rotatably adjusted in its bearing 77 by a worm 86 engaging peripheral teeth on the shaft.
In making prints from the printing plate on the sensitized plate, after adjusting the sensitized plate to the required position for the print and pressing it firmly against the printing plate by the pressure device 0, the sensitized plate is exposed to the action of light which passes through the transparent printing plate, the holder for the printing plate, rotary head 28 and carriage 29 on which the holder is mounted, having openings to permit the passage of light. The light can come from any suitable source, such for example as a lamp 87 in the hood or chamber 88 mounted on the back of the plate holder carriage. The hood shown has a hinged back or section adapted to be opened as indicated by broken lines in Figs. 2 and 3 to afford access to the adjusting device for the rotary head 28 and to allow the operator to look through the printing plate for registering the image thereon with the images on the layout sheet. By mounting the layout sheet as explained so that it can be positioned interchangeably with the sensitized plate and placed flat against the outer face of the printing plate on which the image is located, the images on the plate and layout sheet are placed in direct face to face contact and the operator can make a direct visual registration of the images. This insures great accuracy and precludes the possibility of error incident to the use of scales or indicators or calculations which may be erroneous or not exact. The layout sheet can be opaque and can, if desired, be pasted or otherwise mounted on a backing plate and waxed to hold the sheet flat and Y glass 99provided withfine cross lines. The

QIn some classes of work it is necessary to make printing" plates B from the different units orparts of a composite design. such for example as a label whlch 1s produced from. several lithographic stones, -metal plates, woodcuts or other printing surfaces which may or may not carry suitable register marks, and. to repeat the deslgn on a sensitlzed plate A in accordance with a prescribed layout. In such a case a positive or masterimpression or copy of the design is [made on a glass or other transparent plate or film and, this transparent plate, shown at90 issecured in a suitable holder 91 which is. preferably. similar to the holder for the printing plate B. Thisholder is mounted on a skeleton support or frame 92 suitably hinged to the outer end of the swinging printing plate support 23 so that the former can be swung around to place the transparent master platei90 flat against the face of the printing plate l3,-as shown in Fig. 1. The printing plate can then be adjusted to secure a direct vlsual register of the image thereon with the corresponding part of the master design. Prints of this unit are then 'made from this printing plate on the. sensih tized platein accordance with. the layout on the layout sheet. The printingplates for the other partsof the design are registered and .prints made therefrom in a similar *manner, Printing plates for the different colors of a color job can be registered in like manner;

In the swing type machine described it is possible after one plate has been made by the visual method of registering the negative to the layout sheet,to note the positions of theprints indicated by the dials on the ends of the adjusting shafts 1-9 and'52 and the succeeding color plates can then be registered by setting them tothe positions so indicated. Also a second sensitized plate can be positioned on the holder 56 in place of the layout sheet, and the two plates can be exposed successively after each setting by first swinging one into position and exposing it, and then the other. In this manner two plates can be made with one setting to register, which greatly increases the speed of operation of the machine.
I claim as my invention 1. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a holder carrying a printing plate, two holders carrying respectively a sensitized plate and a layout sheet or the like and movably mounted to interchangeably position either said plate or sheet opposite to and face to face with he printing plate, means for causing a relative movement of said holders toward and from each other to place the printing plate into and out of contact with the opposed plate or sheet. and pressure means for causing an intimate contact of the sensitized and printing plates.
2. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a holder carrying a printing plate, two oppositely swinging holders arranged to interchangeably position members caried thereby opposite the printing plate, means for causing a relative movement of said holders toward and "from each other to place the printing plate into and out of contact with the opposed meni her, and pressure means for causing an intimate contact of the printing plate and opposed member.
3. the combination of a holder carrying a printing plate, two holders carrying respectively a sensitized plate and a layout sheet or the like and interchangeably mounted to permit eitier to move to a position opposite the printing plate, means for moving said sensitized plate and sheet holders parallel with the sensitized plate for placing diflerent portions of said sensitized plate or sheet opposite the printing plate, means for moving said printing plate holder to place the print: ing plate into and out of contact with the opposed plate or sheet, and pressure means for causing an intimate contact of the sensitized and printing plates.
6. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a holder carrying a printing plate, two oppositely swinging holders arranged to interchangeably posi tion members carried thereby opposite the printing plate, means for moving said swinging holders parallel with the sensitized plate fo placing different portions of the sensitized plate or sheet opposite the printing plate, means for moving said printing plate holder to place the printing plate into and out of contact with the opposed member, and pressure means for causing intimate contact of the printing plate and opposed member.

In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a holder carrying a printing plate, two holders carrying respectively a sensitized plate and a layout sheet or the like and interchangeably mounted to permit either to move to a position opposite the printing plate, means for causing a relative movement of said holders toward and from each other to place the printing plate into and out of contact with the opposed plate or sheet, means for causing a relative movement of said holders for placing ditierent portions 01": said sensitized plate or sheet opposite the printing plate, pressure means for causing an intimate contact or the sensitized and printing plates, and a holder for a transparent master design mounted to move said design to and from a. position "face to face with the printing plate.
8. 10. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a holder carrying a printing plate, two oppositely swinging holders arranged to interchangeably position members carried thereby opposite the printing plate, means for causing a relative movement-of said holders toward and from each other toplace the printing plate into and out of contact with the opposed member, means for causing a relative movement of said holders for placing difierent portions of said members opposite the printing plate, pressure means for causing an intimate contact of the printing plate and opposed mem' ber, a holder for a transparent master design mounted tomove said design to and from a position face to face with the printing plate, and a scribing and registering device movable to and from an operative position in front of the printing plate.
11. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of two supports one of which is mounted to swing to and from a position facing the other, means for securing the swinging support in this position, a printing plate carried by one of said supports, oppositely swinging holders on said other support arranged to interchangeably position members carried by said holders opposite the printing plate, means for adjusting said holders, to place different portions of said members opposite the printing plate, means for moving the printing plate into and out of contact with the opposed member, and pressure means for causing an intimate contact of the printing plate and opposed member.
12. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of two supports one of said other support arranged to other support, means for adjusting saids carriage in directions at right angles to each other parallel with the printing plate, oppositely swinging holders on said carriage arranged to interchangeably position members carried by said holders opposite the printing plate, means for moving the printing plate into and out of contact with the opposed member, and pressure means for causing an intimate contact of the printing plate and opposed member.

In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of two swinging supports one of which is mounted to swing to and from a position facing the other, means for securing the swinging support in this position, a printing plate carried by one of said supports, oppositely swinging holders on interchangeably position members carried by said holders opposite the printing plate, means for adjusting said holders to place difierent portions of said members opposite the printing plate, means for moving the printing plate into and out of contact with the opposed member, pressure means for causing an intimate contact of the printing plate and opposed member, and a holder for a transparent master design mounted on the support carrying the printing plate to move to and from a position face to face with the printing plate.

In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of two supports one of which is mounted to swing to and from a position facing the other, means for securing the swinging support in this position, a printing plate carried by one of said supports, oppositely swinging holders on said other support arranged to interchangeably position members carried by said holders opposite the printing plate, means for adjusting said holders to place different portions of said members opposite the printingplate, means for moving the printing plate into and out of contact with the opposed member, pressure means for causing an intimate contact of the printing plate and opposed member, and a holder for a transparent master design, and a scribing and registering device each mounted on the support carrying the printing plate to move to and from a position facing the printing plate.

In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of two supports one of which is mounted to swing to and from a position facing the other, a printing plate mounted on the swinging support, swinging holders on said other support arranged to interchangeably position members carried by said holders opposite the printing plate, means for securing said supports together facing each other and moving the swinging support a limited distance toward and from the otaer support for placing the printing plate into and out of contact with the op posed member, means for adjusting said holders to place different portions of said members opposite the printing plate, and pressure means for causing an intimate contact of the printing plate and opposed mem ber.

In a. photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a holder arrying a printing plate, two holders carrying respec tively a sensitized plate and a layout sheet or the like and arranged to interchangeably position said sensitized plate and layout sheet or the like in corresponding positions opposite the printing plate, means for cars ing a relative adjustment of said holders for placing different portions of said sensitized plate or layout sheet or the like opposite the printing plate, means for causing a rela tive movement of said holders toward and from each other to place the printing plate and opposed plate or sheet into and out of contact, pressure means for causing an intimate contact of the sensitized and printing es, and means for illuminating the plate. 1 in apnetegraplnc pr nting apparatus, tne combination or a holder carrying a print'ng plate, two holders carrying respectively a sensitized plate and a layout sheet or the like and arranged to interchangeably position said sensitized plate and layout sheet or the like in corresponding positions posite the printing plate, means for causing a relative adjustment of said holders tor placing different portions of said sensitized plate or layout sheet or the like opposite the pristin plate, means for causing a rel ative movement of said holders toward and from each other to place t 1e printing plate and opposed plate or sheet into and out of contact, pressure means for causing an intimate contact of the sensitized and printing plates, means "for illuminating the printing plate, and a holder for a master design arranged to permit the design and the printing plate to be placed in registration with each. other.
