Be it known that I, Gnonsn J. MEYER, a citizen of the United States, residin at Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and tate of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety-Doors and Door Attachments for Elevators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in safety doors and door attachments for elevators, this application being a companion to another application filed August 5th, 1919, Serial No. 315,510, for improvements in safety attachments for elevators, and a third application for improvements in door hangers, filed August 5th, 1919, Serial No. 315,511.
The object of this invention is to pro.- vide means whereby the traveling car or cage of an elevator may have its exit provided with a door which will be securely held in closed position when the car is between landings, whether latched or not, it being possible to dispensewith latches and latch and catch mechanisms of all kinds:
A further object of my invention is to provide means whereby the door of a travel ing car may be opened only when in registry with'a landing exit and with a door at the landing, which guards the elevator well. I provide the landing door with a member with which the door of the car moves into interlocking relation when approaching the landing, whereby, when either door is opened, the other door will be simultaneously opened.
A further object of my invention is to provide means whereby, when the two iiiterlocked doors, (one at the landing and the other on the car), are opened,a car locking member, carried by the door at the landing, may be utilized to'hold the carat the landing, and another locking member carried by the car door may beutilized to prevent movement of the controlling lever in either directionfrom neutral position.

The walls 1, landings 2, andcar3 may be of any ordinary construction, except as herein-after described, A door 4 controls the exit from the car. Doors 5 control the door ways in the walls or cages of the eleis provided with a projection 9 which en gages in the channel of the bar 7 of an associated landing door 5, when the car is at that landing. Therefore, when either door 4 or 5 is opened or closed, the other door necessarily moves with it to the open or closed position. away from the landing, the projection 9 enters the channel of a guide 10 which is one of a set secured to the wall of the elevator well between the landings. These guides 10 are in alinement with the bars 7 carried by the respective landing doors. Therefore, whenever the door of the car is closed, and the car moved away from a'landing, the door will be securely locked in the closed position, for the reason that as soon as the projection 9 moves away from any given vertically disposed bar 7, it immediately engages a vertically alined bar 10, which is fixed to the wall of the well, and allows the door to move vertically, but prevents it from moving laterally.
"A controlling cable 15 is employed for the purposes described in the first mentioned companion application aforesaid. This cable runs over pulleys 16 and 17 respectively, located at the top and bottom of the well, and has ends connected with the car by outwardly projecting brackets 18 and 19 respectively, between which a bar 20, (one on eachlanding door), may pass when the car is in registry with the landing, and the landing door opened. This bar 20 prevents the car from moving either upwardly or downwardly while the landing door is open. After'the landing door has been closed, and the car moved away from the hen the car moves landing, a cable 15 willbe struck by the end the bar 20 with the cable will take place before the landing door has opened sufiithe opening.
This feature of my invention is claimed in said first mentioned companion application, and is not claimed herein, except in combination with the controlling bars 7 and 10, and bracket 9, in which combination it performs an additional function by also preventing the car door 4 from opening until the car has reached its proper position wlth reference to the landing, within the limits allowed by, the s acing of the brackets 18 andl9. p
The inner door 4. is also provided with a roller 25. The door moves to open position in the rear of the controlling lever 26, the latter being of the ordinary type in commercial use. When the car door 4 moves toward open position, the roller 25 actuates a locking bar 28 pivotally connected with the floor of the car by arms 29, and having a notch 30 to receive the controlling lever 26, whereby the latter will be securely locked in neutral position. If the lever isonot in neutral position, bar 28 cannot be actuated for the lever will be out of registry with notch 20. Therefore the doors cannot be opened in such case.
Both doors are preferably supported by parallel hanger bars 32. and 33, similar to those disclosed in the second companion application referred to at the beginning of this specification. These hangers are claimed in said companion application, and are therefore not claimed herein, and the claims herein are not limited to any specific form of door supporting mechanism.
With the construction above described, it is not necessary to provide the car doors 4: with latches. The landing doors are preferably provided with latches 35 and 36, adapted to engage catches 37 and 38 respectively, whereby the landing doors may be latched in their open and closed positions, the cable 15 being preferably employed merely as a safety attachment to prevent the landing doors from opening improperly if the latches should not be securely engaged. The latches may be secured to a pivoted section 40 of the channel bar 7, and when the car is at the landing its projection 9 will engage in this section 40, and move it slightly to open the latch during the initial movement of the inner door.
I claim 1. The combination with the members of an elevator well, the landings and movable car, of an inner door for the car, a vertically disposedguard between the landings, and a member carried by the door of the car, adapted to engage the guard to prevent an opening movement of the door while allowing the car to freely move in a vertical direct on. I
2. In anelevator mechanism, the combiciently to permit any person to pass through nation with stationary members constituting an elevator well, of a car provided with a door, and adapted to move in the well, said well having a guard between landings adapted to prevent the door from opening except when the car is properly disposed at the landing.
3. In an elevator mechanism having guiding members constituting a well within which a car may travel, in combination with a car provided with a door, stationary guard members in the elevator well adapted to prevent an opening movement of the door when the car is between landings, and a landing door having a member adapted for interlocking engagement with the car door to require simultaneous movement of both doors toward open or closed position, and allowing free vertical movement of the car door and car, when the doors are closed.
i. In an elevator mechanism, the combination with a vertically movable car provided with a door, of landings and landing doors, and guards disposed between landings, each in a position to prevent the car door from opening between landings.
5. In an elevator mechanism, the combination with a vertically movable car provided with a door, of landings and landing doors, guards disposed between landings, each in a position to prevent the car door from opening between landings, and landing doors each having vertically disposed members alined with said guards, and
adapted to prevent the doors from opening independently when in registry with each other.
6. In an elevator mechanism, the combination with a vertically movable car provided with door, of landings and landing doors, guards disposed between landings, each ina position to prevent the car door from opening between landings, landing doors each having vertically disposed members alined with said guards, and adapted to prevent the doors from opening independently when in registry with each other, and means carried by the car door for locking the controlling lever of the car in new tral position when the door is open.
7. In an elevator mechanism, the combination with an elevator car provided with a traveling stop adapted to hold all landing doors from a material opening movement when the car is out of registry therewith, and a door controlling the car exit, and having means adapted for sliding engagement with the landing doors when moving into registry therewith. 1
8. In an elevator mechanism, the combination with an elevator car provided with a traveling stop adapted to hold all landing doors from a material opening movement when the car is out of registry therewith, a door controlling the car exit, and having means adapted for sliding engagement with the landing doors when moving into registry therewith, and means forlocking the controller lever of the car in neutral position when the doors are opened.
9. In an elevator mechanism, the combination with an elevator car provided with a traveling stop adapted to hold all landing doors from a material opening movement when the car is out of registry therewith, a door controlling the car exit, and having means adapted for sliding engagement'with the landing doors when moving into registry therewith, and devices between the landing doors with which the car door may be in continuous sliding engagement while the car is passing from one landing to the next.
' 10. In an elevator mechanism, thecombination with a set of landing doors, and intermediate vertically extending guards, of an elevator car movable along said set of doors and guards, and having a car door adapted to move successively into and out of controlled relation to the landing doors and guards as the car moves to and from the re spective landings.
11. In an elevator mechanism, the combination with a set of landin doors, and intermediate vertically extending guards, of an elevator car movable along said, set of doors and guards, and having a car door adapted to move successively into and out of interacting relation to the landing doors and guards as the car moves to and from the respective landings, and means controlled by the doors when in interacting relation for preventing further car movement while the doors are open.
12. In an elevator mechanism, the combination with a set of landing doors, each provided with a vertically extending channel bar, intermediate stationary channel bars between the landing doors, and an elevator car movable vertically along the channel bars and provided with a door having a projection movable in the channel of said bars, said channel bars being alined and constituting a continuous way within which said projection may travel.
18. In an elevator mechanism, the combination with a set of landing doors, each provided with a vertically extending bar, intermediate alined bars, and an elevator car movable along said bars, and provided with a car door having means for slidingly engaging the bars successively as the car moves from one landing door to the next, whereby the car door is prevented from opening at intermediate points and is engaged for simultaneous movement with the landing door when in registry therewith. c
14. In an elevator mechanism, the combination with a set of landing doors, each pro- .vided with a vertically extending bar, in- .termediate alined bars, and an elevator oar movable along said bars, and provided with a car door having means for slidingly engaging the bars successively as the car moves from one landing door to the next, whereby the car door is prevented from opening at intermediate points, and is engaged for simultaneous movement with the landing door when in registry therewith, together with looking devices carried by the landing door bars, adapted to be engaged and released by the car door projections when the car door is in full registry with the landing door.
