AM PHUTO-LITHOGRAPHIC ca ux (ossamzfe maczss) UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.-
JOSEPH L. RAUB, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES PARKER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOOLS FORCAPPING CARTRIDGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,720, dated April 8, 1873; application filed March 7, 1873. 1 i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH L. RAUB, of Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Cartridge-Capping Device; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents, in-
Figure 1, a perspective view and in Fig. 2, a modification of the same.
This invention relates to a device for applyin g the primer to cen tral-fire metallic cart-ridge shells. These are placed in a cavity in the center of the head of the shell, and require to be pressed down therein to secure them in position for firing. To do this is the object of my invention; and it consists in a pair of levers or handles pivoted together-one of the jaws constructed to take hold beneath the head and the other to bear upon the center over the cavity, so that, by drawing the two handles together, the cap or primer will be forced into its seat.
A and B are two arms or handles of a pair of levers, pivoted together at a in substantially the manner usually employed for pliers. The arm A is provided with a jaw, C, constructed in a forked or similar shape so as to encircle, or partially so, the shell beneath the rim. The other arm, B, is constructed with a single jaw, D, in such relative position to the jaw C that when the shell is set into the jaw C, as denoted in broken lines, the end or point of the said jaw will be central over the cartridge. This jaw is provided with a slight downward projection, d, which is the central point over the shell.
To prime a shell, the person takes the shell in one hand, and, after placing the primer onto the cavity in the rear of the shell, takes the two handles A and B in his other hand, and, opening the jaws, sets the jaw C on the shell beneath the head,.then brings the jaws together, which causes the projection d on the jaw D to press upon the primer to force it into the cavity of the shell.
As represented in Fig. 2, the same result is attained, but with this modification in the con struct-ion: The jaw C is not divided, and the jaw D extends over so as to form a hook to take beneath the rim on the opposite side; then the handles are brought together, as denoted in broken lines, and the downward projecting portion of the jaw D presses the primer into the cavity.
I do not broadly claim a cartridge-capping device in which a lever is employed to force the primer to its seat in the head of a cartridge-shell, as such I am aware is not new.
I claim as my invention- A pair of levers or handles, A B, pivoted together, one of the jaws constructed to take hold beneath the head and the other to bear upon the center over the cavity, so that by drawing the two handles together the primer will be forced into its seat in the head of the cartridge-shell, substantially as set forth.
