OIL-CAN AND CU]? HOLDER.
- To all 'w'lwm itmay concern:
'Be it known that I, ANDREW TIIKKAINEN,
"a citizen of the Republic of Russiafig'esidin at Virginia injth'e county of St. uis an State of innesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an'Oil- Can and Cup Holder, of which the followmg is a speclfication.
his invention relates to an oil can and cupholder and has for its dprincipal object eflicient means support no matter what position the moving vehicle may take. The holder is especially adapted to be used in such vehicles as railroad trains, boats, aeroplanes, and automobiles for holding cans, drinking cups and the like and furthermore these containers may be of various sizes as the holder is yieldable for the accommodation of recepta- 5 designates the stationa the rectangular shaped o'dy portion an cles of different sizes.
" Another object of this invention resides 'inthe production of a device 'of'this nature which may be manufactured at a low cost and yet bedurable and well able to withstandthe rough usages to which they may be subjected. t
Another object of the invention is to. produce a device of this nature which may be bent so as to be easlly attached to a verticalv With'these and other objects in view this invention consists of the certain novel combination, arrangement, and construction of parts as will be hereinafter more 11115? described and especially pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through 111 invention,
ig. 2 is a 'bottom'" plan view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a rear elevation thereof. By referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals it will be seen that 1 Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed May 17, 1920. Serial No. 881,897. i

having its edges 2 bent over 'upon'the body portion so as to form a guideway into which ,is adapted to slide the movable member 3, The stationary member 1 has its bent portlon's 2 provided with the stop 4 at one end while the other end is bent at right angles to the body portion as shown by the numeral 5. Upon t e rear edge of the stationary rovided the bracket plate 6 shown especial y in F1 s. 1 and 3 of thedrawing. This bracket p ate 6 is pro ivided with apertures 7 so that the same may be fixedly attached to a support by means of screws and it will be noted that this extension 6 or bracket plate may be bent easily at rlght angles to the stationary member '1 or so as to extend in alinement therewith whereby the same may be attached to a vertical or a horizontal support. It should also be noted that'when the device is attached to a bear against the vertical support thus relieving the bracket of such strain as would have a tendency to bend the device so that the bracket late 6 would bein'alinement with the statlonary member 1. This is also true when the device is attached to a horimzontal shelf as these bent'members 5 will bear against the outer edge of the shelf. The movable member 3 is provided adjacentits side edges with the'struck-up portion 8 so as to engage the stops 4 when the device is pulled out to its full lengthfor accoinmodating a rather lar e oil can or container thus preventing t e two members from being accidentally pulled apart. On the forward edge of the movable member 3 I have provided the finger engaging lip 9 so 1 that the operator may grasp the movable member for sliding same outwardly. A compression spring 10 is attached at one end to the lip 9 and its other end is attached to the perforatedear 11 struck from the bottom edge of the bracket 6. Struck upwardly from the rear portions of, the stationary member 1 I have provided the lugs 12 which are bent outwardly at their top portions and have the rubber sockets 13 surrounding their body portions. A similar lug 14=-is struck up from'the outer, ed e of the movable member 3 and is also provlded with a rubber socket 15. This lug also acts as a stop'to prevent the inward movement of the movable plate.
These lugs 12 and 14 areadapted to engage the bottom of the oil can or other container as is shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
It is thought that the operation of my-device will be clearly understood from the above description from which it will be seen that the movable plate is pulled outwardly and the oil can placed on top of the stationary plate 1 as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and the movable plate will then be released so that the vcan will be firmly held between the lugs 12 and l l by the action of the compression spring 10. Although I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention it will be readily seen that numerous minor changes may be made in the construction thereof without departing from the spirit of my invention and I therefore reserve the right to make. such changes in arrangement, combination, and construction of parts as will fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is ILA device of the class described comprising a stationary member and a movable member, the side edges of said stationary member being vbent over upon the body portion thereof so asto form a guideway for said movable member, stops formed on the forward end of said bent portion, lugs struck from out of said movable member so as to engagesaid stops when said members are in an extended position, and means for normally holding said members in a closed posication.
2. A device of the'class described comprising a stationary member and a movable member, a pair of lugs struck upwardly from said stationary member,'a lug struck up! wardly from said movable member, a bracket plate extending from the rear edge of said stationary plate, a finger engaging lip. provided upon the forward edge of said movable member, bent extensions provided upon the side edges of said stationary member so as to form guidewaysfor said movable member, stops formed on said bent portion, struck out lips provided upon said movable members so as to engage said stop members when the device is in an extended position, and means for normally holding said device in a, closed position.
3. A device of'the class described comprising a stationary member and a movable member, bent extensions provided on the side edges of said stationary member for forming guideways for said movable memher, a bracket plate extending from the rear edge of said stationary member, a finger engaging lip extending from the forward end of said movable member, stops provided on E. G. JAoKoLA.
