To all/whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY O. DAVIDSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland Heights, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Concrete Pipes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to concrete pipe sections, such as are employed for the purpose of constructing sewers or other conduits, and has for its object to provide a simple and eflicient means for reinforcing and uniting the sections and for providing a reinforced mechanical bond between the ends of adjacent sections.
In the drawings forming part hereof, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a portion of a conduit formed from sections constructed and united in accordance with my invention, the parts of the conduit sections adjacent to the joint therebetween being broken away to reveal the manner of reinforcing and connecting said sections; and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken through the adjacent connected ends of two pipes or sections. n
Describing by reference characters the parts illustrated in the drawings, 1 denotes each of a pair of pipe sections, the pipe sections being identical in construction. The pipe sections are shown herein as circular in cross section and are composed preferably of concrete. At one end, each section is provided with a wall 2 extending transversely thereof, a cylindrical wall 3 extending from the wall f2 and a wall 4 extending transversely of the conduit at substantially right angles to the wall 3. 5 designates a cylindrical wall extending at substantially right angles from the wall 4, and from the wall 5 there extends an outwardly inclined wall 6 which in turn merges with a cylindrical wall 7. From the wall 7 there extends an inwardly inclined wall 8, the last mentioned wall projecting inwardly as far as the interior of the pipe section.
At the end opposite the one just described, each pipe section is provided with walls 9, 10 and 11 which are complementary to the walls 2, 3 and 4 respectively and adapted to fit snugly thereagainst. From the wall 11 there extends a cylindrical wall 12 forming a continuation of the wall 5; and from the wall l2 there extends outwardly inclined Specification of Letters Patent.

Embedded in cach of the sections 1 is a cylindrical reinforcing member 16, preferably of reticulated metal, such as wire fabric. rlhis cylindrical reinforcing member extends nearly to the opposite ends of each pipe section and is bent downwardly and inwardly at one end, asshown at 16, to form a reinforcement for the corner provided by the walls 3., 4 and 5, the inclined flange thus p rovided extending` in close proximity to the corner provided between the walls 4 and 5 and preferably extending inwardly as far as the wall At its other end, the reinforcing member is bent at substantially right angles, as shown at 16", whereby it forms a reinforcement for the corner comprised between the walls 11 12 and 13, being in close proximity to the wallV 11 and preferably extending inwardly as far as the wall 1Q.
ldfhen the pipe sections are abutted together, the dovetailed recess described hereinbefore will be provided. Within this dovetailed recess l place a cylindrical reinforcing` member 17, preferably of the same character as the reinforcing member 16, the body of said member being interposed between the inner and outer walls of said recess, The end portions of the reinforcing member are flanged outwardly, as shown at 17a, whereby they may bear against the outer wall of the recess and on opposite sides of the inwardly projecting annular shoulders formed by the walls 4, 5, 6 and 11, 12, 13 and serve to center the reinforcing ring therel then fill the recess with concrete material. The invert portion of the recess may be filled by means of a trowel, the meshes of the reinforcing member being suf iiciently coarse to permit the material to pass therethrough, and the filling may be compacted and the inner surface finished ofi' flush with the inner surfaces of the pipe sections. After filling the invert, a split ring 18 may be inserted within the pipe sections so as to cover the joint betWQGIl the pipe scm tions and form a retaining wall for the concrete which is to loe applied to the upper part of the recess between the sections. rlhe upper part may then be filled by breaching a hole through either or both of the pipe sections, pouring the concrete therein in the usual manner. After this filling has set, the ring 18 may be collapsed and removed and any cavities in the inner surface of the filling may be filled in with a trowel.
By the construction described ll am enabled to construct the sections in such manner that the corners will resist all ordinary handling or other incidents of use and to provide a reinforced mechanical bond between adjacent sections, which bond is capable of being readily and conveniently formed, which is comparatively inexpensive of production, and which will combine the foregoing advantages with efficiency in operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
