To @ZZ whom 'it 071,063/ concern.'
Be it known that I, CARL WINKLER, a citizen of the Swiss Republic, residing at Berne, in the Swiss Republic, have invented a new and useful Sheet-Feeding7 of which the following is a specification.
-My invention relates to a device for lifting singlel sheets of paper, or the like, from a pile by suction and blowing. From existing devices of 'this kind my invention differs by the fact that the blowing nozzles are divided into two different groups with special air tubes. One of these groups of blowers has vertically' extending nozzles and such a connection with the pressure pipe that said blowers serve simultaneously to loosen the -upper sheets of the pile, and to lift their front edges toward the suction nozzles. As soon as these suction nozzles have seized the top sheet of the pile, the second group of blowers, which has horizontally extending nozzles, enters into action and separates the sheets from the pile in known manner.
By this device the topsheet of the pile can be lifted from the pile with certainty, while the amount of compressed air required is only small, owing to the operations of the two groups of blowers ibeing separate, and i the relatively short duration of the separate impulses. I i.
In the drawing illustrating my invention. Figure 1 is a side elevation of the pileand of the suction and blowing nozzles,
Fig. 2, a back elevation of both groups of blowers, f
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 show the valve for' regulating the introduction of air to the suction and blowing nozzles in section, side elevation and plan, i
Fig. 6 represents the parts for actuating the valves in horizontal section.
rlihe suction nozzles a (Fig. l) are so oscillated about the shaft Z) by the eccentric 0 that the top sheet taken up from the pile (Z is transported farther. For the purpose of better raising the top sheet toward the suction nozzles a the blowing nozzles e (Fig. 2) have aT-shaped section, and these nozzles are connected with the air-pipe f.
When the sheet has been seized by the suction nozzles a the connection of the nozzles c with the' air pressure pipe f is cut off, and the nozzles g of horizontally extended section begin blowing air under the sheet j caarglwiaxrsa rtmnafswlrzimeim i' 'i i i Svedese@ f Lettera retest ,f Patented-An raised by the suction nozzles, so'vthatthis:
sheet is completely separated from the pile.
The passage of the compressed air 'to the nozzles e and g is controlled by the threeway cock Z1., the casing of which is made in one piece with that of the three-way cock c',
' by which the suction' of the nozzles a is controlled. Thev compressed air is fed to the valve casing through the socket 72 from any desired source and passes upward through the valve Z to the pipe f leading to the nozzles c by which the pile is loosened or downward through the valve m to the*` pipe n leading to the blowers g which serve to separate the top sheet from the pile. The valve Z is fastened to the spindle 0, while the valve m 1s loosely mounted on said ,spindle and is pressed down by the spring p. Bvmeans" of the lever g, roller r and cam disk s the valves Z and m are alternately opened and closed. y
.The valve casing z' for suction has also two valves. To this casing is connected the suction pipe atl?, so that when the valve u is raised, the suction extends to the nozzles a. If the valve u is closed, and the .lower valve o is opened, the suction nozzles are connected with the atmosphere, so that they let loose the sheet which they have advanced somewhat by their swinging motion. These valves u and o are actuated by the valve spindlew, lever m, roller y and'cam disk e.
"What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is l. In a device forV lifting separate sheets vfrom a pile' by means of suction and blowing nozzles, a suction nozzle, a group of vertically extending blowing nozzles for loosening the upper sheet and raising the front edge of the same to the suction nozzle, a second group of horizontally extending blowing nozzles for separating the sheet seized by the suction nozzle from the pile, and means for controlling the blowing nozzles whereby when the last named group are in action the first named group are inactive.
2. In a device for lifting separate sheets from a pile of the kind set forth in claim 1, the use of double valves for controlling the suction and blowing nozzles respectively, one of which valves (Z or u), by which communication is effected between the presssure pipe and one of the groups of blowers or between the suction pipe and thesuction nozzles (a), being fastened on the valve spindle (o or w), while the other valve (m or lv), by which communication is effected between the pressure pipe and the other group of blowers or between the atmosphere `and suction nozzles (a), is adzmted tol slide on, and is actuated by a sleeve surrounding, said s lndle. Y
j3. n a. device for from a pile of the kind set forth in claim 1^, the arrangement vof the double valves for lifting separate sheets controlling the passage of air to'and from. the suotlon and blowing valves'n one Casing, substantially as set forth.
In testilnony whereof I have signed my 15 name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
