Description

S. S. FITCH.
Culinary Boilers. 910,137,604. PatentedAprl,1873.4
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL s. FITCH, or new Yoex, N v.
VIIVIPIIIOVIVENT IN CULINARY BOILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,64, dated April 8, 1873; application filed January 27, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. FITCH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Culinary Boilers; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, of which- Figure l is a side elevation, Fig. 2 a vertical and longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 a vertical and transverse section.
The body A of the boiler is an open vessel, provided with a cover, B, and handles C C, arranged as shown. A short distance above the bottom a. of the body A, there is extended into the body from one side of it, and parallel to the bottom a, a shallow case or chamber, D, which opens through the side from which it springs, and is provided with a door, b. There is between the back and ends of the chamber D and the next adjacent back and ends of the body a space, e, in order that a liquid, when within the body, may be in Vcontact with the top, bottom, two ends, and rear side of the case D. Such case is designed for the reoep. tion of one or more heated prisms or bars of iron, which, when closed within the case by shutting the door thereof, will thus be caused mostly, if not all, to impart their heat to the case, and thence to the liquid within the boiler.
A faucet, E, may be extended from one end of .the boiler, as shown.
With such a boiler or heater, and such means of heatingits contents, water or other liquid may be raised in temperature, or even boiled, expeditiously and very economically.
I am aware that tea-urns have been made with a vertical tube arranged in the center of the body, and provided with a cover, such tube being extended up from the bottom of the body, and intended for reception of alleated iron cylinder. I therefore make no claim to such. With such, the tube uniits the iron for being used for the usual purposes of a culinary boiler. My arrangement of the heating-chamber, especially so that it shall open through the side of the vessel A, not only saves all necessity of removing the ooverB in order to gain access to the heating-chamber, but so disposes of the latter that there is a clear space above it for vegetables or meat-s. By saving the necessity of taking olf the cover B, in order to open the heating-chamber, escape of steam and odors and dripping of Water from the cover are avoided. Furthermore, it admits of several heaters being used, and of a greater amount of heating-surface being obtained.
I therefore claiml The improved manufacture of culinary boiler or vessel A and shallow chamber D, arranged as represented, and with the latter to open through the side of the former, all being as set forth.
SAMUEL S. FITCH. Witnesses:
