To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILBURN A. GALLE- MORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Clinchfield, in the county of Russell and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Reboring-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in reborin machines, and more particularly to machmes of this character especially designed for reboring cylinders in the event that the same become scored or otherwise rendered inoperative.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily and easily applied to an engine cylinder, while the same is in place on the engine base, thus eliminating the necessity of removing the cylinder to accomplish the reboring thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will insure the cutting blades being maintained in proper cutting relation with the walls of the cylinder, when the same are being forced through. the cylinder.
A still further object of the invention is to provide means for automatically feeding the cutting blades through the cylinder, when the same are being rotated to perform the cutting operation.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without de artin from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the
device includes a supporting rod 5 having a threaded portion 5 extending from one end thereof, and terminating substantially intermediate its length, the opposite end of the supporting rod 5 having a reduced threaded portion 6, to receive the apertured disk 7 which disk is secured to the rod 5 by means of the nut 8.
Supported on the rod 5, is the tubular member 9 which is of a length less than the length of the supporting rod 5, to permit the tubular member 9 to move longitudinally of the rod 5 for purposes to be hereinafter more fully described. Formed integral with one end of the tubular member 9 1s a blade supporting head 10 having a plurality of grooves 11 formed in the under surface thereof which grooves are provided for supporting the cutting blades 12, which as shown, are secured in the grooves by means of the wedge members 13, which menibers are held in position by means of the bolts 14 operating through suitable openings in the lugs. As shown, each of these cutting blades 12 is provided with an inclined surface coopcrating with an inclined surface 15 provided on the respective members 13. It will thus be seen that when the bolts 14: are moved to draw the members 13 within their openlngs, the cutting blades 12 are secured against displacement from the grooves in which the same are positioned.
This head 10 is of a diameter slightly less than the diameter of a predetermined standard sized cylinder, so that the blades 12 may extend beyond the periphery of the circular head 10 to permit the blades to cut, when the head 10 is moved longitudinally of a cylinder.
In order that the tubular member 9 may move freely over the supporting rod 5, a bushing 16 has connection with the tubular member 9 and head 10, which bushing is also provided with an angular slot 17 i extending throughout its length for receiving a lubricating medium, to facilitate the operation of the device.
The upper extremity of the tubular member 9 is threaded as at 18 to cooperate with the threads 19 formed on the follower 20, which is also provided with threads 21 adapted to cooperate with the threaded extremity 5' of the rod 5.
Associated with the tubular member 9 is the operating lever 23 having the ratchet head 24, which head is designed to embrace the tubular member 9, to grip the same for causing the rotation of the tubular member 9 with the result that the follower 20, moving over the threaded portion 22 of the supporting rod 5 forces the tubular member 9, together with its head and cutting blades 12, toward the disk 7.
As shown, by Fig. 3 of the drawings, the disk 7 has a beveled periphery 25 adapted to position itself within the open, or lower end of the cylinder to which the device is applied so that the supporting rod 5, is maintained in an upright position within the cylinder under operation, to the end that the cutting blades 12 are held in proper operative relation with the walls of the cylinder.
Positioned on the tubular member 9 is a head 26, which head has a flange 27 formed at the base thereof for contacting with the upper edge of a cylinder, there being pro vided bolts 28 for securing the head 26 to the cylinder, as indicated by Fig. 1 of the drawlngs.
Movement of the supporting rod 5, with relation to the head 26 is prevented by means of the relatively long bracket member 29 having its lower extremity bent at right angles as at 30, and apertured to receive the bolt 31, whereby the bracket 29 is secured to the head 26, the upper end of said bracket 29 having a right angled end 32 which is forked to engage within the groove 33 formed in the head 34, which in turn is positioned on the extreme upper end of the threaded portion 22 of the supporting rod 5.
It might be further stated that a groove 35 is formed longitudinally of the tubular member 9, and receives a lug formed on the ratchet head 24 so that movement of the ratchet head 24: is imparted to the tubular member 9 to cause the rotation thereof.
In the operation of the device, the head of a cylinder to be bored is removed, the pistonand rod is also removed and the supporting rod 5 extended upwardly through the cylinder until the disk 7 contacts with the inner walls of the cylinder adjacent the lower end thereof.
The tubular member 9 is now positioned on the rod 5 and the head 26 is moved over said tubular member 9 and secured to the upper end of the cylinder.
After the blades 12 have been adjusted to a predetermined degree to permit the same to properly cut, the operating lever is rocked over the tubular member 9, with the result that the tubular member 9 together with the cutting blades '12 is moved through the cylinder with the result that portions of the cylinder are evenly and accurately removed.
It follows that when the head 10 has reached a point adjacent the disk 7, the operator places his hand on the nut 34 to vent rotation thereof, and it will be seen that pre- I further rotation of the operating lever 23 operates to move the threaded portion 5 thereof downwardly through the nut 34, with the result that the supporting rod 5 drops through the cylinder being bored, and the cylinder is resurfaced throughout its entire length.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. In a boring machine for reboring cylin ders, a supporting rod having a disk on one end thereof, said disk having inclined surfaces to cause the same to seat within one end of the cylinder, a tubular member sup ported on the supporting rod, cuttin blades carried by the tubular member, a re atively large head positioned on the tubular memher and adapted to be secured to the upper surfaces of a cylinder, means for rotating the tubular member and cutting blades, a bracket member having connection with the relatively large head and having a right angled upper extremity, a threaded head positioned 1n the right angled upper extremlty, said supporting rod having a threaded portion extending through the threaded head,
and said rod adapted to be threaded through ders, a supporting rod, means for securing the supporting rod within a cylinder, a bracket forming a part of the machine, means carried by the bracket and adapted to recelve one end of the supporting rod, a tubular member adapted to move on the supporting rod, means for rotating the tubular member to cause the supporting rod to fall through the cylinder, when the lower end of the tubular member reaches the base of the cylinder.
3. In a boring machine for reborin cylinders, a supporting rod, means carrie at one end of the rod for securing the same within a cylinder, a tubular member carrying cutting blades and mounted on the supporting rod, said supporting rod having an upper threaded portion, a bracket member extending in parallel relation with the supporting rod and having a right angled extremity, a threaded head carried by the bracket member and adapted to receive the threaded portion of the supporting rod, means for rotating the tubular member, and said means adapted to rotate the supporting rod to cause the same to disengage the threaded head, when the tubular member reaches the lower end of the cylinder.
