The trout wheels are attached to the frame hereiube'tere describ d for vertical adjustment and also for ad ustment as to width. Referring now particularly to Figs.
1 and2, a pair of depending brackets 5 are secured to the front end of the frame and carry at their lower ends bearings in which is mounted a shaft 6, on which are slidably and rotatably mounted a pair of sleeves 7, which are held in adjusted position by means of collars 7 clamped to the shaft 6 by set screws, as shown in Fig. 2.
Each of the sleeves 7 carries a forwardly extending rod or arm 8, the opposite end of which is secured in a second sleeve 9, that is slidably mounted on a shaft 10 which forms the front axle of the truck and carries a pair of ground wheels 11. The sleeves extension of the plate 3 and is supported at its lower end on a cross bar 12 secured at its ends to the arms 8. At the outer end of each of the sleeves 9 may be mounted a spindle 15 carrying a pulley 16 approximately midway of its height around which passes a cable 47 that extends back to the steering wheel at the drivers seat whereby the front wheels are steered. A vane 17 may be mounted at the upper end of the spindle 15 to indicate to the driver that the front frame has properly responded to the movement of the hand wheel. The usual radiator 70, fan 69 and water tank 64: are mounted on the front end of the frame 2. The fan is operated by means of a belt and pulley connection 68 with a shaft 67 carrying at its rear end a bevel pinion 66 in mesh with a bevel gear secured within a pulley 62 mounted on the end of the shaft 61. The pulley 62 is for the purpose of connecting a belt thereto whenthe tractor is held stationary and the motor is to be used for do ing other work.
The rear wheel carrying structure as hereinbefore stated, is mounted for both vertical and sidewise movement relatively to the main frame. For this purpose I have provided a rear frame comprising a channel-shaped cross bar 26, to the ends of which are secured a pair of extension members 32 provided with a plurality of bolt holes for permitting adjustment of the length of the members 32 on the cross bar 26 whereby the distance between the rear wheels may be varied for road work or plowing. The members 32 are pivoted at their outer ends to a pair of channel-shaped members 29, which are pivoted at their opposite ends to a pair of brackets bolted to the side bars 2- of the main frame, a plurality ofbolt openings being formed in the side bars whereby the members 29 may be adjusted along the side bars 2 to correspond with the adjustment of the extension members 32. At the rear ends of the members 29 are pivotally mounted a pair of depending members or standards 130 (Fig. 1), carrying at their lower ends trunnions 131 on which the wheels 85 are mounted. Suitable supporting braces or stays e8 form bearings for the lower ends of the members 130 and are secured at their opposite ends to the members 29. For permitting the rear wheels to be steered independently of the front, the upper ends of the members 130 are provided with a pair of radial arms 132, to the ends of which are pivotally connected a rod 40. A pair of bars 35, one at each side of the frame, are secured at one end to the cross bar 26 and carry their opposite ends a bar 3%, the bars 34: and 35 forming a framework on which is mounted the drivers seat 36 and the attachment-operating levers 37. A shaft 4a is mounted in bearings carried by the bar 34; and the cross bar 26, and on this shaft is secured a chain wheel or sprocket 2, which is connected by a chain 43 to a chain wheel carried on the shaft of the hand wheel A l. The shaft 4E1 carries a bell crank which is connected to the steering rod 10. The hand wheel shaft also carries a worm adapted to mesh with a worm gear which operates a spool 46 around which the cable 4-7 for steering the front wheels is wound. The chain 43 may,however, be removed from the sprockets and the rear wheels left to be shifted by a foot lever if so desired. For locking the rear frame to the main frame I have provided a T-shaped member 24, (Fig. 10), which is pivotally mounted on the end beam of the main frame and having the portion 133 thereof extend ing through an elongated slot 134 formed in the cross bar 26, a roller 25 being mounted onsaid portion 133 for engagement with the upper and lower walls of said slot, as shown in Fig. 1. An upright spindle 27 provided at its lower end with an eye is pivoted on the outer end of the portion 183, said spindle passing through the connecting plate 4: and having mounted thereon a pair of cushioning springs 28 in a manner similar to the spindles 13 at the front end-of the machine. By this construction the rear frame may be maintained against sidewise movement relatively to the main frame by inserting a pin through openings formed in the flanges of the channel bar 526 at each side of the roller 25, thereby preventing the roller from moving sidewise in the slot. A pair of channel formed brace members 20 are secured to the rear portion of the main frame and extend rearward and upward at an angle thereto and carry at their outer ends a pair of uprights 21 for supporting the hand wheel let and the gear shift and clutch levers 22 and 28. l. framework 38 is secured to the cross bar 26 for attachment of various farm implements, as for instance listers, plows or Cultivators, the latter being illustrated at 39, all of which may be suitably connected with the levers 37 for operation from the drivers seat. I prefer to use in connection with the tractor describedthe treads 88. Such treads, however, form no part of this invention and are described in my contemporaneously pending application, Serial No. 268,152, filed December 24, 1918.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a machine in which the motor is mounted in such manner that its bearings may be adjusted, by releasing the bolts or screws that clamp the hanger bracket to the sleeves 51, and shifting such bracket around its axis to the desired position, the motor having been first disconnected from the gas, water and intake pipes and such pipes reconnected to the motor in its adjusted position. It will also be seen that the motor and the driving mecha nism are mounted in parallel relation aXi ally thereof, whereby a better balancing of the weight of the engine is obtained and less strain on the frame is produced when power is applied. It will also be observed that I have provided in this machine a novel means for changing the gears, and while I have described in detail the structure herein illustrated, it is to be understood that I do not thereby limit my invention to the precise features of construction shown, as I am aware that many mechanical changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the claims hereto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I I claim is: a i
1. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a frame, a pair of sleeved brackets secured one at each side of said frame, a housing mounted for rotation on the sleeves of said bracket and provided with a double internal gear, a hanger bracket mounted on said sleeves and adapted for adjustment around an axis, a motor seated in said bracket, a shaft mounted. for rotation in said sleeves and adapted to be driven by said motor, a pinion mounted on said shaft for rotation therewith, gearing between said pinion and internal gear for transmitting rotary motion to said housing through either internal gear, and means for shifting said intermediate gearing from engagement with one internal gear into engagement with the other.
I 2. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a frame, a pair of sleeved brackets secured one at each side of said frame and havingupwardly extending arms,
a shaft secured in said arms, a housing mounted for rotation on the sleeves of said bracket and provided with a double internal gear, a hanger bracket mounted on said sleeves and adapted for adjustment around an axis, a motor seated in said bracket, a shaft mounted for rotation in said sleeves and adapted to be driven by said motor, a pinion mounted on said shaft for rotation therewith, a sleeve mounted for rotation on said first mentioned shaft, a gear secured to said sleeve and in mesh with. said pinion, a pair of gears mounted for rotation on said sleeve and one in engagement with each of said internal gears, and means for securing either of said pair of gears to said sleeve for rotation therewith.
The combination as set forth in claim 2, the last mentioned means comprising a plurality of keys adapted to slide in keyways formed in said sleeve and having supplemental lreys adapted to slide in lreyways formed in said gears.

In a machine of the class described the combination with a frame, a housing theren mounted for rotation, and a motor on the frame and within the housing for rotating the housing, of wheel carriages at each end of the machine pivotally secured to the frame and adapted to permit adjustment of the dis;-ance between the wheels carried thereby.
5. In a machine of the class described the combination with a frame, a housing therein mounted for rotation, and a motor on the fl and withinthe housing for rotating the housing, of wheel carriages at each end of the machine pivotally secured to the frame and adapted to permit adjustment of the distance between the wheels carried thereby and the rear wheel carriage shiftable independently f the machine.
6. In a machine of the class described the combination with a frame, a housing therein mounted for rotation, and a motor on the frame and w in the housing for rotating the housing, 0.1. wheel carriages at each end of the machine pivotally secured to the frame and adapted to permit adjustment of the distance between the wheels carried thereby, the rear wheel. carriage being shiftable independently of the machine and adapted to be steered independently of the front wheel carriage, both of said carriages being adapted to be raised with relation to the machine.
