To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that TORAKIOHI UMEpA, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing at Tennoji mura, Prefecture of Osaka, Japan, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelop-Machines, of. which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an apparatus for making seamless envelops. The invention more particularly relates to apparatuses of this character in which perforate patterns or molds, conforming to the shape of the product, are placed in liquid pulp contained in a vat, the bottom of which communicates with a discharge pipe and carries a suction pipe extending to each mold, so that when the solution contained in the vat is withdrawn through the suction pipes and the discharge pipe, it is filtered through the molds thus leaving a film or thin layer of the pulp on the outer surface of each mold. The invention is an improvement on this type of apparatus.
In the knownapparatus, pulp is discharged through the mold, and the fiber of the pulp adheres to the mold, so as to inclose the latter, a vacuum is produced in the mold. If, owing to powerful suction, the vacuum produced is considerable, the layer of pulp deposited on the mold will be uneven, and a product of uniform thickness cannot be obtained. Furthermore, in such apparatus, a comparatively large force is required for lifting the frame supporting the molds, which latter are attracted to the bottom plate.
The foregoing defects are eliminated by when the liquid the apparatus according to the present invention, in which there is an air inlet pipe for the purpose of introducing airinto the mold, and, as a further improvement, an arrangement whereby the liquid pulp contained in the vat is free from disturbance, so as to allow the pulp fibers to adhere to the mold. This latter arrangement consists of two or more'horizontal partitions arranged in the lower portion of the vat and having perforations out of register with each other, and baffles by which the speed of flow of the pulp caused by the suction, may be efiiciently reduced.
In the accompanying drawings, an apparatus in accordance with this invention is illustrated in vertical section.

bottom of the vat and beneath them is a discharge chamber 10 adapted to be emptied through the pipe 8 controlled by valve 9. The upper ends of the branch pipes 5 are at a higher level than the upper ends of the suction pipes 11.
At the lower part of the vat there are horizontal partitions 12 in which are perforations out of register with each other. Battles 17 depend from the lower or lowest partition and extend upwardly from the bottom of the vat, in alternation with each other. Owing to these bafiles the path of the liquid pulp passing into the vat is lengthened and the speed of flow reduced. In the known apparatus referred to above, the liquid pulp is directly introduced at the bottom of the mold, so that the liquid pulp is agitated by the movement of the entering pulp and precipitation of the pulp fiber is prevented, while the fiber which may have adhered to the mold is washed ofi. Owing to this disturbance of the pulp the product is damaged. This defect is eliminated in the present apparatus by the partitions and battles aforesaid. The construction of the new apparatus is very simple and its management is facilitated owing to the short length of the portion of the suction pipe 11 which enters the mold 4. In the known apparatus heretofore mentioned, this portion of the suction pipe is of a length substantially equal to the length of the mold, and the discharge chamber moves vertically with all its accessories, so as to enable it to withdraw the liquid pulp through the mold while the latter is gradually descending. It is to eliminate these defects, that the air inlet pipe 3 is provided. By opening this pipe, air is introduced into the interior of the molds 4, so as to break the high vacuum produced therein and although water enters into the branch pipe 5 during the suction of the pulp through the suction pipe 11, such inlet pipe 3 isopened. aving now particularly described and ascertained the nature of this said invention and in what manner the same is'to be performed, I declare that what I claim is 1.
