Description
J. P. ROE.
OSCILLATING PUDDL'ING FURNACE.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 29, 1919.
Patented Apr. 19, 19215 "Unitas v555K553f1ttiiii-i5?itif a NEW? JAMES rn'rnn non, or oTrsrowN, PENNSYLVANIA.
OSCILLATING EUDDLING-FITRNACE.
To all whom it may concern:
Y Be it known that I, JAMES P. Ron, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pottstown, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oscillating Puddling-Furnaces; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention'relates to oscillating puddling-furnaces, and particularly to'the type shown in the United States Letters Patent, No. 678,281, granted tome on July 9, 19 O1. The object of the invention is to provlde simple and effective means to increase the speed of the oscillating puddling-furna-ce, at the same time economizing in power, and, likewise, to reduce the shock and strain'due to the sudden starting and stopping of especially large and heavy furnaces.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like reference letters indicate corresponding parts in the two figures:
Figure 1. Is a side elevation of my improved puddling-furnace, the latter being shown in dotted lines, and,
Fig. 2. An end elevation, partly insec tion, of the important parts of Fig. 1. H
In said drawings, (t represents (in outlines) an oscillating furnace, and 6 its supporting columns. To each side of the furnace are secured the ends of ropes 0 (as shown at e), passing over sl1eavesrZ,rZ-to the cross head 9, which latter is pivotally mounted on plunger h adapted to reciprocate in cylinder m, having a suitable bushing- 0.
The operation is a very simple one. When the furnace at is being oscillated, that is to say is being moved, in either direction from its normal position, it draws the ropes c with it, and as the latter, after passing over Specification-of Letters Patent. if Patgnfigd A 19 1921 Application filed March 29, 1919. Serial No. 285,991.
head 9, the plunger h is moved into the. cyl nder m, thus compressing the air contamed in the latter. The result of such compression is the retarding of the 'move-..
ment of the furnace while it approaches its limit, and by means of the increased presthe sheaves (Z, (Z, are secured to the cross-- sure in the cylinder, stops the furnace without shock, simultaneously storing up energy for quiclrfacceleration when starting in the opposite direction.
The initial pressure in the cylinder m may be'that of the atmosphere, or of any higher pressure found necessary to most fully accomplish the desired result. I do not intend to limit myself to the details of construcsaid furnace, and means connected with the latter and with the air compressing means to control the'latter and vlce versa, for the purposes set forth.
2. In a device of the character described, means connected with an oscillating puddling-furnace, comprising a cylinder, a plunger arranged in said cylinder, and adapted to compress the air therein, and means for movingsaid plunger into the cylinder. Y 3. In combination with an oscillating puddlingfurnace, a cylinder, a plunger in said cylinder adapted to compress the air therein, and a suitable flexible connection between the, furnace and the plunger, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my-signature.
JAMES PETER ROE.
