  • This invention relates to dirigible headlights and has for its primary object to provide a device of this nature for motor vehicles which automatically adjusts itself so as to always throw its rays of light directly in the path of travel of the vehicle.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. DUERST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pine Lawn, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dirigible Headlights, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dirigible headlights and has for its primary object to provide a device of this nature for motor vehicles which automatically adjusts itself so as to always throw its rays of light directly in the path of travel of the vehicle.
Another object of the invention is to generally improve upon dirigible headlights of this character by providing a device which will be of extremely simple, durable and inexpensive construction, one which is efficient and reliable in operation and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With these and numerous other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and the combina tion and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

upon their upper ends upon which are mounted the dirigible headlights which are not shown in the drawings. 7 An adjustable rod 5 formed in two sections and connected by means of bolts which pass through slots so that the sections may be adjusted in relation to each other is situated immediately below the arms 6 of the cranks 3 and are attached thereto bymeans of the,apertured knuckles 7 which are swivelly mounted on the rod 5. One of these knuckles 7 is provided with a bolt that passes through one portion of the bracket 8 as shown in Fig. 2. This bracket 8 is of an angular construction provided with an elongated slot 9 in its vertical portion for receiving the boltlO which is attached to the bar 11. This bar 11 is twisted so that oneportion thereof will be at right angles to the other portion and at its lower end is bent so as to form the sleeve 12 which will surround the steering arm 13 of the steering knuckle 14: which is mounted in the usual manner upon the front axletree 5.
Thus it will be seen that any rotary motion of the steering knuckle 14: will impart a swinging motion to the steering arm 13 which in turn will be transferred to the crank arms 3 through the bracket 8 and adjustable rod 5 in a manner which will be self-evident upon an inspection of the draw- 'ing.- It willalso be noted that collars 15 lutely necessary since'the axletree 15 is al-v ways mounted to the chassis 1 by means of a spring or other resilient devices. Thus it will be seen that the continual jarring of the axletree 15 when the vehicle is in motion will not be imparted to the other mechanisms of v the dirigible headlight.
,From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, theconstruction and operation of the device will be readily understood without a more extended explanation. As numerous changes in form, proportion, and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit 5 of this invention, I do not wish to be limited to the construction herein shown and described other than as claimed- Having thus described my inventionwhat I claim as new is 1.
