In such machines there is usually provided an automatic pick-up mechanism to cause the traveling element of the cross-com puting unit to travel step by step with the corresponding element of the column-com puting unit through a computing zone; the
pick-up mechanism being engaged by ad-v justable devices on the typewriter carnage. These pick-up devices may be 'in the form of tabulator-stops, adapted to engage wlth a suitable pick-up hook to actuate the latter when the carriage passes through a computing zone, said movement being transmitted through suitable mechamsm to the cross- It is sometimes desirable to disconnect or silence the computing mechanism. For this purpose, there is usually provided a silencing element actuated .by a non-compute keV. J
lln object of this invention is to renderthe pick-up mechanism ineffective when the computing mechanism is disconnected, thus avoiding unnecessary movements -of the cross-totalizer and consequently reducing the wear and tear of the machine.
To do this, there is preferably provided a train of mechanism extending from the non-compute key to engage the pick-up hook, to remove the latter out of effective relation with thepick-up elements when the computing mechanism is silenced by the non-compute key.
In carrying out the invention, it is shown as applied to an Underwood Addendagraph of the type disclosed in the application of Henry L. Pitman, Serial No. 186,098, filed August 14, 1917, in which both column and cross-totalizers are, employed, each being provldedwith computing wheels which are caused to traverse a relatively fixed master wheel.

The loose and fixed dogs vibrate back and forth during letterfeeding operations between teeth 35 of the escapement wheel 36 which has the usual one-way connection with a pinion 37 meshing with a rack 38 supported on thecar-' rlage.
' To compute the numbers as they are typed, the key-levers of the numeral keys '10 are provided with cam plates 41 having slots 42- therein which vary in shape to rock a bail 43 through different angular distances according to the values of the nuin an actuator meral keys; said bail forming part of a di-f-- ferential rocking frame 44 comprising also an intermediate member 45 which pulls downwardly on a link 46 to transfer said movements, by means of a train of mecha* nism, as disclosed in said Pitman applica-' tion, to a master wheel 47 contained with- 48 of the column-computing unit 51. .The movements of the. master Wheel are transferred to dial wheels 52 by means of intermediate pinions 53 contained within a totalizer 54 of-the column-computing unit; said totalizer being adjustably supported'on. a truck 55 which is adapted to travel on a fixed rail 56 and with the typewriter carriage 21, so as to bring the intermediate pinions 53 of said totalizer 54 into effective relation with said master wheel 47 sem'atim; connections between said truck 55 and said carriage 21 being-made by one or more arms 59 extending from said carriage. A cross-computing unit 57, comprising an actuator 58-and a cross-totalizer 61, is also provided and located at the lower righthand side of the machine; said actuator 58 comprising a master Wheel 62 which is adapted to be driven in unison with the master wheel 47 of the column-computing unit. To do this, a shaft 63, which forms part ofthe train of mechanism between the connecting link 46 and the master wheel 47 of the column-computing unit, has thereona beveled gear 64 meshing with a beveled gear 65 secured to the upper end of a vertical shaft 66 extending downwardly to the actuator 58 of the cross-computing unit 57; connections from said shaft 66 to the-master wheel 62 of the cross-computing unit bein made in a similar manner as that disclose in the Pitman application herein referred to.
The totalizer 61 of the cross-computin unit is also mounted on' a truck 67 adapted to run on a fixed guide rail 68, andis adapted to traverse the master wheel 62 every time a column-totalizer passes through a computing zone.
To cause this movement 'ofthe cross-totalizer 61, there may be provided on the type: writer carriage adjustable devices engaging with suitable pick-up mechanism connected with the cross-totalizer, which serves to cause the cross-totalizer to travel with the typewriter carriage. -These adjustable devices may be in the form of column-stops 71 adjustably mounted on a stop bar secured to the typewriter carriage.
The pick-up mechanism may include a pick-up bar 72, Fig. 2,-having a hook 73 thereon with which the column-stops 71 engage. Said pick-up bar'normally occupies a position toward the right-hand side of the machine, where a pin 74 on said pick-up bar bears against the end 7 5 of a slot7 6 formed in a fixed cam plate 77. it is also held against rev apes the upper edge 7 8 of the cam plate 77 by a spring 81 through the intermediary of a. ;lever, 82 having a stud 83 which bears against the under side of said pick-up bar 72. 'WlIGlTI, however, a column-totalizer passes through a computing" zone, the corresponding column-stop 71 engages with the pick-up bar 72 to move it rightwardly in Fig. 2 to swing a substantially vertically disposed lever 84 about its pivot 85, the lower end. of said lever having a slot 86 to receive a rearwardly extending arm 87 of an intermediate member 88 pivotally supported at 91 on a fixed bracket 92 said intermediate member having a forwardly projecting arm 93 suitably connected'with thetruck 67 on which said cross-totalizer 61' is supported. A suitable returnspring 94 is connected between the lever 84 and a pin 9'5 on said fixed bracket 92.
After the typewriter carriage has passed through a computing zone, the pick-up bar -72 becomes disconnected from the columnstop by a cam 96 on the fixed cam plate 77, said cam being. engaged by the pin 74 on said pick-up bar. The hook 7 3 on said pick-up bar. is thus moved out of engagement with the column-sto 71, whereupon the pick-up mechanism an the cross-totalizer are restored to their normal positions by the return spring 94.
It is sometimes desired to disconnect the computing mechanism, so that numbers may be typed without transferring their values to the totalizers. To do ,this, there is provided a silencing device 97 which may be actuated by a non-compute key 98 through the intermediary'of a link 101 which may .be
moved rearwardly when the non-compute key is set to a silencing position. When said silencing device 97 is actuated, it swings an interponent 102 about its pivot 103 to break the connection between the bail 43 and the intermediate element 45, which is normally maintained by a spring 104 which 1 holds said interponent aga nst a pin-105 on ated idly when moved by the cams 41 on the numeral keys. In other words, the movements imparted to said bail 43 are not at this time transferred to the master wheels.
This invention comprises means to render the pickup bar ineffective, and preferably at a time when the computing machine is silenced. This may be done by a train of mechanism connected tothe non-compute key 98 and may comprise a link 107 which is moved forwardly when the non-compute key is moved to its silencing position; said link being effective to rock a shaft 108 by means of an upwardly extending arm 111 connected to said link,'said rock shaft being supported in a suitable bracket 112 secured to the machine frame, and having a forwardly projecting arm 113 thereonwhich is adapted to pull] downwardly on a bar 114 guided in a suitable bracket 115 and having at its upper end a hook orfinger 116 which'oven lies said pick-up bar, so as to swing the latter about its point of connection 117 on the lever 8 1, Fig. 2, and thus move the hook 73 on said pick-up bar 72 out of effective relation with the column stops 71, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the typewriter carriage 21 may travel back and forthw'ithout eflecting a picking up of the cross-totalizer 61. Due to the fact that the pick-up bar lies close to the lower edges of the columnstops 71, Figs; 1 and 2, the pick-up bar is cut out at 118 to permit the hook 116 to overlie-said pick-up bar and still clear the lower edges of said column-stops 71.
Any convenient form of detent may be provided to maintain the non-compute key 98 in the positions 'to which it may be moved Thecolumn-stops 71 are used, in the wellknown manner, in combination with denomination-stops or plungers 119,, which may be actuated to release the carriage and position it in any denomination of the several columns.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and ortions of the im rovements may be usedw thout others.
aving thus scribed'my invention, claim:
1. In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination of a type writer carriage, a cross-totalizer, pick-up devices on said carriage, an intermediate member'spring-pressed upwardly to enable engagement thereof by said pick-up devices, means whereby said intermediate member when in engagement with one of said-pickup devices will cause the cross-totalizer to be advanced with the carriage, a lever pivoted on the typewriter frame near the front thereof, and means actuated by said lever, including a member having a hook overlying said intermediate member, to withdraw said intermediate member from the path of said pickfup devices.
2. In combination, typewriting mechanism, including a typewriter carriage, alphabet and numeral keys for actuating said typewritingmechanism, a' movable fingerpiece mounted'adjac'ent saidv keys, a crosstot alizer, means to feed said cross-totalizer with said carriage, including pick-up dogs mounted on said carriage at its rear and a 'member spring-pressed into osition to be engaged by said dogs and a v'anced theresaid link, and means ger-piece to theother mechanism, pick-up with, and means actuated 'by said fingerpiece to withdraw said spring-pressed member from the path of said dogs.
3. In a combined typewriting and computing machine,the combination of a carriage, pick-up dogs on said carriage, a crosstotalizer,'means to feed said cross-totalizer with said carriage, including a member yieldably positioned to be engaged by said dogs and advanced therewith, a link having at one end a hook engaging said member, to enable the withdrawal of the latter. from the path of said dogs, a bell-crank having one of itsarms pivoted to the other end of for actuating said bellcrank, including a finger-piece mounted on the machine near the front thereof.
4. In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination of a carriage, pick-up, dogs on said carriage, a crosstotalizer, means to feed said cross-totalizer with said carriage, including a member yieldably positioned to be engaged by said dogs and advanced therewith, a link having at oneend ahook engaging said member, to enable the withdrawal of the latter from the path of said dogs, a bell-crank having one of its arms pivoted to the other end of said link, a finger-piece near the front of the machine, and a link connecting said finarm of said bell-crank.
5. In a combined typewriting and computing-machine, the combination with a carriage, a cross-totalizer, pick-up means for said-cross-totalizer, and computing mechanism for actuating said cross-totalizer, of means to silence the computing mechanism, and means controlled b said silencing means to render said pic -up means ineffective.
6. Ina combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination with a carriage, a cross-totalizer, and computing mechanism for actuating said cross-totalizer, of means. to cause said cross-totalizer to travel with said carriage when the latter enters a computing zone, silencing means for the computing mechanism, and means to render said first-mentioned means ineffective when said silencing means is actuated.
7. In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination of a carriage and a cross-totalizer, computing means to cause sa1 cross-totalizer to travel with said carriage when the latter enters a computing zone, silencing means for the computing mechanism, a non-compute key to actuate said silencing means and means connected to said key to render said pick-up means 1neflFective.

dogs on said carriage, means to feed said cross-totalizer with said ,carrialge, including a member yieldably positioned in the path ofsaid dogs to be engaged thereby and advanced therewith, and means, including a finger-piece at the front of the machine, for withdrawing said member from the path of said dogs.
9. In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination with a carriage, of a cross-totalizer, computing means for actuating said cross-totalizer, silencing means for said computing means, including a finger-piece, dogs on-said carriage, a member yieldably supported in the path of said dogs to be engaged thereby and advanced therewith, connections between said crosstotalizer and said member, to enable actuation of the former bythe latter, and means actuated by said finger-piece for withdrawing said member from the path of said dogs 10. In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination of a carriage, a totalizer, denomination-selecting means, including a reciprocable pick-up element associated with said totaliz'er,- adjustable devices on said carriage to engage said pick-up element and actuate the same, a link having a hooked end engaging said element, a finger-piece mounted in the front part of the machine, and means whereby actuation of said finger-piece will actuate said link and thereby Withdraw said element from the path of said adjustable devices.-
11. In a combined typewriting and computing machine, in combination, a carriage, a column-totalizer traveling therewith, comuting mechanism "for actuatin said column-totalizer, a cross-totalizer, computing a column-totalizer to travel'therewith, com-- puting mechanism for said column-totalizer, a cross-totalizer, pick-up mechanism to cause said cross-totalizer to travel with said carriage, means to silence said computing mechanism, and means, controlled by said silencing means, to render said pick-up mechanism inefl'ective.
