GEORGE Jiiiiiisis11v, or Winans-BARRE, riiNNsYLvAivIA.-
To Yall 'whom t may concern: y
-Beit known that I, GriioiienV JURnsisiN, a
, citizenof Czechoslovakia, residing at Wilkes- Barre, iii the county of Luzerne and Stateof Pennsylvania, have invented certain ynew and useful improvements in Mine-Drills, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the present invention resides in the provision of amine drill wherein the drill with its driving shaft is vertically adjustable for drilling in a bank at different heights with the support for the forward end of the drill shank being vertically adjustable for engaging the ceiling and floor of a mine room.
A. further object of the invention is to pro vide a mine drill wherein the driving mechanismfor the drill is supported kat a point considerably` spaced therefrom with vertically adjusting means for the rear end of the support spaced from the driving mechanism. l/Vith the above and other objects in view2 the invention consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts herein fully described, shown'in the accompanying drawings, and wherein like reference characters indicate similar parts throughout the-several views.y
In the drawings, v

MINE-DRILL.
y Specification of Letters Patent. Patntd Apr, 12,/ 1921. Application led. September 19, 1919. Serial No. 324,794.
`ing the driving mechanism will first be described and'are shown more clearly in Figs. 1, 2,3, 9 and 10, the supporting legs being arranged in, upwardly converging kpairs as shown1in`Fi'gj-,3 and comprising upper sec tions-and lower sections 7, the upper sections being connected by transverse links 8 to limit the spreading movement of the legs.-
As shown in F ig.` 1, the lower section y7 carries a dove-tailed shaped rib 9 upon its inner face adapted for slidingreception in the dove-tailed groove 10k formed in the adv jacent face of thefllpper. section 6, while the adjusted positions betweenthe legy sections are maintained by pins 11 passing through registering openings 6 and 7 in the leg `sections respectively. .i The upper ends of the leg sections 6 are pivotally secured as at 12to the rear end of the rectangular frame 13 shown more clearly in Figs. l' and 2, the frame 13 supporting the driving mechanism for the drill. A central cross shaft 14.- is journaled transversely of the frame 13 and carries a relatively large gear 15 within the sides of the frame 13wliile transverse shafts 16 and 17 arejournaledin the frame at opposite sides of the shaft 14;, the shaft v16 carrying a pinion 18-in mesh with the gear 15 while the shaft 17 has fixed thereto a pinion 19 in mesh with the gear15, motion being im-l parted to the meshing gears by the crank handle 2O secured to the outer projecting end of the shaft 16. A driving shaft 21is journaled at itsfrear end in the bearing 22 in the forward end of the frame 13 and has connectedto theinner'end thereof a bev# eled pinion 23 in constant mesh with the beveled .pinion 19 formed integral with kthe pinion 19, the forward end of the driving shaft 21 having connected thereto a drill24.
7 A vertically adjustable 'rack for support* ing the forward end of the drill shaft 21 is provided and as shown more clearly inFigs.
1 and 4 to 8, the same including, as illustrated in Fig. 4, an upper section embodying a cross head 25, having depending side bars 26 slidable over the upstanding slide bars 27 of the lower cross member 28, the lower cross member 28 carrying a floor spur foot 29 for engagement with the floor 2 of the mine, while the upper cross head has a central threaded opening therein through which the screw 30 having a pointed upper end 3l is adapted for entering the roof l of the mine Afor anchoring the rack, the screw being operated by the handle 32 at its lo-wer end. As illustrated in F ig. 5, the supporting rack is vertically adjustable7 whichadjustment comprises in detail metal bands 33 inclosing the side bars 26 and 27 of the rack, which bars are secured at 34 to the bars 26. The side bars 26 and 27 are provided with transverse openings 35 and are adapted to i shaft 2l is journaled in the bearing 40 of.
the saddle 39 with the drill 24 positioned in the pocket 5 of the-mine Wall 3. By' operat- 24 may be caused to operate upon any part of the mine wall such as the pocket 4 in Fig. l by positioning the saddle at the desired elevation.
lVhile there is herein shown and described what is believed -to be the preferable em-v bodiment 'of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood vthat minor changes may be made in the form, combination and arrangement o part-s without departing Yfrom the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as newis A drill of the type described comprising Y a mechanism supporting frame, supporting legs for one end thereof, a drill shank eX- tending from the other end oi the `frame, and an adjustable rack for supporting the forward end of the shank and spaced from the mechanism frame.-A
ln testimony whereof I aliix my signature.n
