To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM L. RAY, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of the city of Oregon, in the county ofOgle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact des'cription of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates: to a combination repair tool and a hammer adapted for use in the construction and repairs to wire fences or wireconstruction work in general, said tool having a hammer. at one end and a wire reel repair mechanism on the other end thereof adapted to splice broken wire strands.
It is an object of this invention to provide a combination tool adapted for constructing and repairing wire fences and the like.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a tool adapted to be connected with a'broken wire to repair the same by connecting in a piece of wire'between the broken ends of the broken wire, drawing the wires taut, and securely twisting the same together.

It is an important object of this invention to provide a combination wire-repairing tool simple and effective in construction, having a hammer at one end and a plurality of manually rotatable mechanisms at the other end adapted for securely connecting up the this invention is the On the drawings;

The combination wire. repair-tool 3v comprises a shank or handle 4, having integrally formed or rigidly secured onone' end thereof a claw-hammer 5, or other instrument, on one side of which is secured a hook 6, adapted to be removably engaged over a wire to support one end of the combi nation tool in position. wl enxrepairing is to be done on a broken wire.

The end of the shank 4-, opposite the hammer 5,'is bifurcated to form'a pair of arms 7 and 8, separated and parallel to-one another, theinner ends of which converge toward each other and are integrally connected with the shank 4. Integrally" formed on one edge of the arm 7 is acurved ridge or extension 9, lyingin the plane of the an 7, and having anotch 10 therein, the inner edges forming said: notch being sharp- I ened to form cutting edges, for a purpose hereinafter described. Projecting laterally through the arms 7 and 8, is a shaft 11, having one end projecting through the arm 7 and a washer 12, and threaded to receive a nut 13, while the other end of said shaft to, the outside of the arm 8, has a crank or handle 14 integrally formed thereon to af ford a means for rotating said shaft. The crank end of the shaft 11 hasa bearing collar or bushing 15 thereon, engaging the arm 8, to afford a bearing for the shaft and also prevent lateral shifting movement thereof through said arms.
Keyed or rigidly secured by-other suitable means upon the shaft 11, between the arms 7 and 8, is a reel 16, the end adjacent the arm 7 having a plurality of sharp edged cutting notches 17 formed therein and adapted to co-act with the notch 10 to act as a wire cutter or nipper to cut a repair wire 18, wound upon the reel 16, when a strand ofthe same is placed in the notch 10'and in one of the notches 17 ,by simply rotating the reel by means of the crank 14. To lock the reel 16 against rotation, a pawl 19 is pivotally mounted on the inner surface of the arm 7, in a position to be manually moved to engage in any one of the notches 17.
Integrally connecting the outer ends of the arms 7 and 8, is a hollowcylindrical collar or neck piece 20, provided with a slot 21, and having cut in one half of the inner periphery thereof on each side of the slot 21, a groove 22 adapted to register with a groove 23 formed in a semi-circular retaining plate 24, which is removably heldseated in a suitable recess in the end of said neck piece 20, by means of screws 25. Rotatably engaged in the registering grooves22 and 23 of the neck 20 and the plate 24, is a head 33, the inner end of which is grooved to afford a fiange 26, adapted to engage in the grooves 22 and 23, to hold the head'in position when the retaining plate 24 is secured in place. Integrally formed on opposite sides of the head arelaterally directed wings or arms 27 disposed adjacent the outer ends of the neck 20 and the retaining plate 24, and having the outer ends thereof extending beyond the sides of said neck and plate to afford suit able means for turning or holding the head. Formed integrally on the head at right angles to the inner ends of the arms 27, are a pair of jaws 28, separated from each other by a slot or opening 29 normally registering with the slot 21, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8. Also integrally formed on the outer end of the head 33, and separated from the jaws 28 by means of a notch 30, is a notched projece tion or lug 31, adapted to permit a wire loop. 32 to be formed bybending one of the ends of the, broken fence strand 2 around said lug 31, and then twisting the same upon itself as shown in Fig. '4.
The operation is as follows;
.l/Vith the combination tool assembled as shown and described, the repairing of a when strand 2 of fence wire is very readily accomplished. By holding the tool by the shank 4, one end of the broken wire. 2 is bent around the lug 31, and twisted upon itself to form a loop 32. The end of the repair wire 18, wound on the reel 16, is then thread ed through the neck 20 and the head 33, and then through the'loop 32, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The end of the repair wire 18 is thensecurely entwined with the other end of the broken wire 2, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The reel 16 is now turned by means of the crank 14 in a direction to wind up the repair wire 18, thus tightly drawing the repair wire connected to the ends of the broken wire 2 taut between said ends of the fence wire and alined therewith.
To hold the broken wire 2 and the repair wire 18 in taut position, the pawl 19is now moved to engage in one of the notches 17, to hold the reel 16 locked. The tool is now turned into a horizontal position parallel with the fence, and the hook 6 is engaged over the end of the wire 18, connected to the wire strand 2, said wire 18 engaging, through the slots 21 and 29, in a position parallel to the shank 4, as shown in Fig. 3. In this po sition of the tool it will be seen that the loop 32 has been disengaged from the lug 31 and is positioned between the jaws of the head 33.
The head 33 is now held stationary by grasping the arms 27, with the loop 32 engaged between the jaws 28, and the remainder of the combination tool is then rotated in a horizontal position around the taut end of the repair wire 18, thus twisting the portion of the wire 18 between the reel 16 and the loop 32, around the taut portion of the wire 18 connected with the loop to securely hold the broken ends of the wire fence strand 2 connected together. The pawl 19 is now disengaged from the reel 16, and the wire18 is then bent to engage in the notch 10 and in one of the reel notches 17 moved into a position to register with said notch 10, in which position the reel 16 is turned by means of the crank 14, thus cutting the wire 18 on the out ting edges of said notches. The combination tool isthen removed from the repaired upper fence strand 2, by disengaging the hook 6, and moving the head end of the'tool away from the repairedwire 2 through theof any kind upon which the device-maybe engaged, and that any type of construction tool desired may be substituted for the hammer, or that-the tool niavgbe' entirely omitted and a hook, for engagingthe upper wire, may be secured on the shank itself.
I am also aware that various other details of construction may be variedthrough' a wide range without departing from the principles of this. invention,.and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art. I claim as my invention:
1. In a device of the class described, a shank, means on one end of said shank for mounting the device in position for use arms integrally formed on the other end 0' said shank, a rotatable cutter reel mounted between said arms and adapted to hold a repair wire thereon adapted to be connected to the broken end of a wire to be'repaired,
' means for locking said reel against rotation,
and slotted means connected with said arms adapted to removably engage around said repair wire to connect up the ends of the broken wire.
2. In a device of the class described, a shank, arms integrally formed thereon, a reel mounted between said arms and adapted to have wound thereon a repair wire which is to be connected between the ends of a broken wire, a crank for rotating the same, wire-cutting means associated with said reel and arms, a slotted neck integrally connected to the outer ends of said arms, a
' slotted head rotatably secured therein adapted together with said neck to removably engage around wires to be connected to permit said reel to be rotated by said crank to draw said wires taut, and means on said head to permit the same to be held stationary while the rest of the device is .ro-
tated about said wires to securely connect the ends of the broken wire together.
3. A wire connector comprising a handle, means fixed to said handle for holding an end of a wire, a reel rotatably mounted on said handle for holding and tightening a connecting wire when connected to another wire end, and means mounted on said handle for fastening together said first-mentioned wire end and said connecting wire.
4. A wire connector comprising a handle, means fixed to said handle for holding an end of a wire, a reel rotatably mounted on said handle for holding and tightening a connecting wire when connected to another wire end, means mounted on said handle for fastening together said first-mentioned wire end and said connecting wire, and wire-cutting means associated with said reel.
5. A wire connector comprising a handle, means fixed to said handle for holding an end of a wire, a reel rotatably mounted on said handle for holding and tightening a connecting wire whenxconnected to -another wire end, and means mounted on said handle for? fastening together said, first mentio'ned comprising a handle,
wire end, means mounted on said handle for fastening together said first-mentioned wire end and said connecting wire, said holding means comprising a lug adapted to pass through a loop in said first-mentioned wire end, said lug having a slot therein adapted to allow said connecting wire to pass through said loop from said reel to said other wire end, and said fastening means arranged to twist together the portions of said connecting wire which passes through said loop.
7. In a tool of a class described, a handle, means for axially rotating said handle connected therewith, a reel in said handle adapted to carry a repair wire, means on said reel and handle for cutting said repair wire, and slotted means on the end'of said handle arranged to rotate with reference to. said handle and adapted to twist said re pair wire upon itself after the same has been connected between the broken ends of a wire strand'to repair the same.
8. In a device of the class described, a shank, arms formed thereon, a reel mounted between said arms and adapted to hold a re pair wire connected to another wire to be repaired, a slotted neck connected to the .outer ends of said arms, a slotted head roconnect the ends of a broken wire together.
9. A wire splicer comprising a shank, a lug projecting from one end-of the shank and adapted to receive a wire loop thereon, wire tightening means mounted on said shank intermediate its ends, and a slot in saidlug arranged to allow a wire to pass through said loop.
10.
