WELDTNG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 12, 1921.
Application i1ed July 21, 1920. Serial No. 397,915.A
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ETHAN I. DoDDs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Welding; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in welding and particularly .to the welding of closures to boiler sheets adjacent to the connection of the staybolts withthe latter one object of the invention being t0 provide a simple portable and eicient manner of butt-welding a cap or closure to the boiler sheet whereby the abutting portions of the cap or closure and the boiler sheet shall be so fused as to become integral the one with the other and thus to eliminate danger to the person of the operator, which might be incident to a reater or lessfextent, to the employment o what is known as a plastic weld.
A further object is to so butt-weld a cap or closure to the boiler sheet that a homoeneous, steam-tight union shall be insured.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certaln novel features as hereinafter set forth and pointed vout in the claims. v
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a plan view of a device for usein applying a cap or closure to a boiler sheet; Fig. 2 is a sectional view, partly in elevation; Fig. 3 is a diagrammatical view, and Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are views showing modifications.
1 represents an outer boiler sheet having a bolt opening 2, the latter being formed to provide a seat 3 for the head 4 of a staybolt 5.
The head of the staybolt is covered and the opening in the boiler sheet vlis seated by means of a cap or closure 6 (which is buttwelded to the boiler sheet as hereinafter described) andl said cap or closure is made in such size and proportions as to provide a clearance space 7 for head of the staybolt.
8 represents an electro-magnet having a general U-shape so that its Qpoles may be laced against the boiler sheet distances rom the position which the closure 6'is to occupy, and the coils 9 of said magnet are included in an electric circuit 10, the latter including a suitable source of direct current (such as a battery 11) and a switch 12.
The intermediate portion 13 of the core of the magnet '8 constitutes a fulcrum for the hook-shaped end 14 of the short arm `of'a lever 15. The long arm of the lever constitutes a handle of considerable length and at the juncture of the long and short arm of the lever, the latter is enlarged and may be made with a recess orvsocket 16 having an insulating lining 17. The enlarged portion pf the lever `may also be made with an opening having a tubular insulating lining 18. A plunger 19, which constitutes an electrode to engage the-cap or closure, may be movably mounted in the recess of the lever and is provided with a rod or stem 2O which passes through the tubular lining and beyond the top of the lever. Disks 21 may be provided on the rod or stem 2O to receive an electric conductor between them and a nut22 may be threaded on said rod or stem tov clalnp said conductor between the disks. The rod or stem 2Q thus constitutes a binding post on the electrode or plunger. The
lower end of the electrode or plunger 19 may be made concave to conform approximately to the contour of the cap or closure and a strong spring 23 located within the recess of the lever mayexert a downward pressure on the plunger and the cap or closure.
4The secondary winding of a transformer 24 is connected in acircuit 25 with the boiler plate 1 and the plunger 19,--one terminal (26) of said circuit being connected with the stem or binding post 2O and the other terminal v (27) being connected with the boiler sheet. A suitable'switch 28 will be included in the circuit 25. The primary of the transformer 24 is connected in a circuit 29 with an alternating-current generator 30 and a switch 31,-an adjustable' inductive resistance 32 being also included in said circuit 25.
The cap or closure 6 is placed on the boiler sheet around the bolt opening and over the head of the staybolt, with a small quantity of spelter interposed between the flat edge of the cap or closure and the face of the boiler sheet, and said cap or closure will be held properly in position by the plunger 19,-the lever carrying said plunger having been connected with the magnet and the latter having been properly positioned on the boiler sheet andthe circuit of its coils closed. rllhe generator 30 having been started, the circuit includingV the secondary of the transformer, may now be closed and pressure applied to the lever 15. Illhe pressure of the spring 23 and that applied to the lef ver, will be transmitted through the plunger electro-magnetic frame or structure com- 19 to the cap or closure 6, and while the cap or closure is thus under pressure, and the greatest resistance in the circuit 25 occurring between the edge of the cap or closure and the adjacent portion of the boiler sheet, these parts of the metal of the cap and boiler sheet will become fused and welded together, making the cap or closure and boiler sheet integral, theone with the other, and edecting a homogeneous steam-tight union.
llnstead of making the part which carries the plunger in the form of a lever having pivotal connection with the magnet as shown in Figs. 1 and 2,-the core or frame of the magnet may be provided with an integral arm 33 having a head 34 as shown in Fig'. 4, said head carrying the spring-pressed plunger 19, and in this instance, the-spring and the holding force of the magnet against the boiler sheet may both be utilized to supply the necessary pressure on the cap or closure during the welding operation. llf desired, the device may be provided with a handle 35 Vas shown in Fig. 4.
-lin the form of the invention shown in Fig. 5, the spring is dispensed with and an electrode 36 secured in the lever 15 and insulated therefrom as indicated at 37.
In the construction shown in Fig. 6, the
prises a plurality of arms 38 radiating from alcentral portion 39 and each arm is provided with a coil 40. The coils 40 are connected in series in circuit with a battery 11 and a suitable switch 12. 'llhe central portion 39 of the magnetic frame or structure is made with an opening which receives the electrode, the binding post of which is shown at 41,-it being understood that said plunger and its binding post are suitably;7 insulated from the magnet frame or structure.
retrete Having fully described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
