Description

'1. 0. KELLER.
EGG TESTER.
APPLICATION HLEn1uLY17.1919,
1,374,577. v Patented Apr. 12,1921.
'UNITED STATES JOHN O. KELLER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOB OF ONE-HALF TO Y 0F COVINGTON, KENTUCKY.
.PATENT OFFICE.
FRED w. KELLER,
Y nee-TESTER.
To all whom/ concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN O. KELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Egg-Testers, of which the following is a specification.
An object of my invention is to produce a device for testing or cand'ling eggs in a more reliable and simple manner than has been done heretofore 'Y A further object is to produce adevice for candling eggs in the presence of a customer,
as is required by law in muchV more rapid and easy manner than has been possible heretofore.
These and other objects are attained in the egg candling device described in the following specification and'illustrated in the accompanying drawing which illustrates an egg candling device embodying my invention.
. Although my improved device. may be made of wood, I have chosen to illustrate the embodiment as being made of metal. i
In the device shown, a cabinet or boX'consisting of a back l, sides 2 and 3, a bottom 4, a top 5, and a front 6, is provided. A portion of the front ofthe cabinet is open, ardoor 7 being provided for closing the open portion. To keep door 7 closed I preferably" provide spring hinges 8 and 9, a knob l() being provided `to open the door. ,Within the space closed by the door I provide slides Y 11., 12 and 13 upon which drawersmay be slid, one drawer 14C being shown in position o n slides 11 and partially within the cabinet. Each drawer consists of a front 15 to which an egg-supporting platform 16 is attached, the sides 17 being bent down with inturned edges which rest upon the slides. The platform of each drawer is provided with perforations 18 having depressed edges 19 in which the blunt end of thel eggs vrest as shown. To permitY the drawers to be re- Vi'noved easily I have provided each withV a linger notch 20 in its front 15.
Above the top drawer I provide a means of illumination, such as an electric lamp 21 in the back of the cabinet. Above the lamp I provide a reflector 22 to cast the rays of illumination downwardly and in each end of the cabinet I provide ventilators 23 and 24, a ventilator in the top, not beingV shown.
1919. seri-a1 No. $1,568.
Y To provide access to the lamp 21 I provide the top 5 with hinges 25 and 26.
At the bottom ofthe cabinet I 'provide Specification of Letters Patent. Ptented Apr. 12, 1921.
Application led July 17,
ner surfaces of the cabinet walls and bottom j until they suiliciently relect the under sides of theveggsl in the drawers, or by providing `inserts of pieces of mirror. 'I
In using my improved device it is but necessary to lill a drawer with the eggs by'v placing the vblunt ends thereof withinV the '5 perforations 18. The drawer is then placed within the cabinet, the door 7 being allowed to close. Thelamp 2l is then illuminated, the rays therefrom passing through the eggs and being reflected in the reflecting surfaces 27, 28, and 29 as represented by images 30. Any bad eggs in those in the drawer will be readily shownin reflections 80. As soon as the eggs have been tested, another drawer may be slipped in position, the three drawers permitting the several clerks in va store to use the device substantially simultaneously, one clerk filling, another testing, and another emptying the eggs for as many customers.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is An egg tester comprising a cabinet having a drawer containing compartment, a series of drawer slides in the drawer-containing compartment, adaptedl to receive one or more drawers, a series of' bottomless skeleton drawers'having notched fronts, adapted to occupy thek slides, the kfronts substantially closing the drawer containing compartment, a lamp containing compartment above the drawer containing compartment, a reflector above the lamp in the lamp containing com- Y in the .presence of two. witnesses.

V.WILLIAM J. SCHULTZ.
