To all whom it may concern:

- Be it known that I, GEORGE PAPPANP KOLAOU, a subject of the King ofGreece, residing at Petersburg,'-in the county of Dinwiddie and Stateof Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarettes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in cigarettes and the main object of the invention is to provide a cigarette which W1ll always smoke freely and burn uniformly, and to furnish said cigarette with a filter- Ting'devi'ce which will prevent the empyreumatic odor and nicotin from coming in contact with the lips or,mouth of the smoker; and to this end the invention consists in constructing cigarettes with a mouth-piece containing. sponge impregnated with materials to insure a cool, sweet smoke.

Cigarettes have, heretofore been constructed having mouth pieces containing various substances for filtering thesmoke but these filtering substances do not have the absorbing qualities of sponge nor are they impregnated with materials to sweeten the smoke.

With my construction the sponge in the mouth-piece is moistened by the mouth of the user and the sponge will absorb. this moisture and tend to cool and sweeten the smoke.

With the foregoing object outlined and with other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel features hereinafter described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawing, 1 represents an ordinary cigarette having a mouth piece a cylindrical piece ofsponge 3. The sponge is impregnated with a mixture of materials to sweeten the smoke. This mixture consists of the following ingredients in the stated proportions 20 -parts-of water. 5- parts of sugar.

4 parts of vinegar. 1 part of rose water.

In use, the sponge will absorb moisture from the mouth of the user and this moisture will 'cool the smoke, while'the mixture with which the sponge is impregnated will sweeten the smoke.

vWhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is '1. A cigarette having its mouth-piece inclosing a piece of sponge which is exposed at one end of the cigarette and provides a resilient bit for the users lips.
