lhly invention'relates to machines for punching and bending sheet-metal, and has special reference to the application of sheet-metal corner-pieces to the upper trihedral angles oi the type of gas-stove shown in Letters Patent No. 1,G63,217 granted to me June 3, 1913.
There has been considerable dilliculty in satisfactorily attaching corner pieces to the three-angled corners of sheet-metal stoves. /Vhen bolts are employed they are liable to become loose; besides, it has been found difficult to apply bolts in such a manner as to .give the stoves desirable rigidity. The present invention makes use or cornerpieces secured to the stove-body without the use of: bolts. The corner-pieces have integral tongues which are thrust through holes punched by my machine and then bent up or clenched by this machine against the mterior walls of the stove-body. By the use of this invention I am also able to dispense with the interior reinforcing pieces the corners of the stove shown in the said Letters Patent. This invention is not limited to use with cor1ier-picces such as described herein, but extends to the use of cornerpieces of any type with which the machine is adapted to work.

@n-the drawings, 1, 2, and 3 designate respectively, the two sides and the top of a sheet-metal stove-body, meeting to form a three-angled corner. The upper ends of the sides 1 and 2 are providedwith exterior beads a parallel with the said ends, and the top 8 has at each edge the exterior beads 5 shaped to fit closely over the beads 4. The sides 1 and 2 have each a hole 6 near each corner and just beneath the said beads. The holes 6 are made by this invention. 7
7 is the sheet-metal corner-piece having its two outer edges forming the same angle with each other as the sides 1 and 2 make with each other, and provided with the beads S which lit the beads 5 when the body of the corner-piece lies flat on the top 8. The under sides of the beads 8 have the two tongues 9 arranged to enter the holes 6, as shown on Fig. 9 and adapted to be bent up or clenched against the inner faces of the sides 1 and 2, as shown on Fig. 10. 10 is the base oi my improved machine. 11 is a vertical standard or column secured to the base near one end thereof by the bolts 12 extending into the base through the slot 13 in the foot 1a of the standard. The top of the standard'is provided with the horizontal die or table 15 having the vertical sides 16 meeting at the same angle that the sides 1 and 2 of the stove-body meet each other, and extending toward the opposite 'end or the base 10 from that over which it rests. The top and sides 16 of the table 15 form a trihedral angle congruent with the trihedral angle formed by the top 3 and the sides 1 and 2 or the stove-body. The said end of the base supports the standard or column 16 secured to the base by the bolts 17 extending into it through the slot 18 in the foot 19 of the standard; The slots 13' and 18 are in alinement so that either link 26.

The member 21 is operated longitudinally by the lever 24 pivoted to the arm at 25 and connected to the lower end ofthe lever by the The outer end of the member 21 carries the head 27, which has a recess 28 in 7 its forward end formed to engage a cornerpiece 7 lying on the top 3 of the stove-body and push the same tightly up against the beads 8. The recess 28 has its upper wall closely engaging the top of the corner-piece at the same time that the head is forcing the corner-piece on the beads 8.
The L-shaped punching head 29 is pivotally attached to the upper side of the head 27 by the pin 30 which passes through the lower or inner end of the arm or member 31 of the L-shaped member and the ribs 32 on the upper side of the head 27. The other arm or member 33 of the L-shaped head 29 extends at a right angle with the member 31, and, toward the table 15 when the head is in its idle or elevated position, as in Figs. 2 and 4. The member 33 projects downwardly when the member 31 lies horizontally on the head 27 and has two arms 34 between which the rectangular punch-holder 35 is secured by the screws 36 which enter diagonally opposite corners of the holder. The left-hand or lower face of the holder has at its lower or rear edges the spacer ribs or bars 37 having the same angular relation with each other as the sides 16 of the table 15 have with each other. The ribs 37 carry in recesses on their bottoms the punching dies 38, arranged, when the head 29 is in its lowered position (Figs. 1, 3, and 11) and the member 21 is pushed to its forward or lefthand limit, to have its upper portion rest on the top 3 and its dies 38 pierce the sides of the stove-body (indicated in dottedlines at 39, Fig. 1) and form the holes 6. 40 is a handle on the member 33 by which the punch-head 29 may be raised and lowered. The spring 41 attached to the top of the standard 16 and to the handle 40 tends to hold the punch-head in either its elevated or its lowered position, as the spring evidently crosses the pin 30 when the punch-head moves from one position to the other.
The standard 11 carries below the table 15 the die-holder 42 which is reciprocable thereon. It carries at its sides the two upstanding bending-dies 43 arranged to project above the holder 42 and through the slots 44 in the sides 16 of the table 15 and engage the tongues 9 and bend them upwardly as hereinbefore described. The holder 42 carries the bracket 45 which is connected by the downwardly extended link 46 to one end of the foot-lever 47 pivoted to the standard at 48. A spring 49 having its lower end secured to a fixed support has its upper end attached to the bracket 45, whereby the member 42 is returned to its lower position when it is free to move.
50 is a pair of rods passing on opposite sides of the standard 16' and connected to the standard 11. The rods carry on opposite sides of the standard 16 the plates 51 which by means of the nuts 52 on the rods, clamp the standard between them and hold the standards rigidly and properly spaced.
The operation of the described machine is as follows: The parts being as in Figs. 1, 2, and 4, a stove-body is placed on the table 15 with the top 3 resting on the table and with the inner faces of the sides 1 and 2 in contact with the sides 16 of the table. The operator seizes the handle 40 and swings the punch-head 29 down to a horizontal position as shown in Figs. 3 and 11. He then moves the lever 24 to the right (Fig. 1) thereby causing the top 35 of the head 29 to slide on the top 3 of the stove-body while the dies 38 punch the holes 6 in the sides 1 and 2 of the stove-body. The lever 24 is next moved to the left which retires the punch-head from its operative position. The head is then swung upwardly to its idle position (Figs. 1, 2, and 4). A cornerpiece 7 is then placed on the stove-corner with the tongues 9 in registry with the holes 6. Then the lever 24 is again swung to the right, causing the recess 28 in the head or hold-down 27 to engage the angle of the corner-piece and push it firmly into engagement with the top 3 and the tongues 9 as far as possible through the holes 6. While still holding the corner-piece firmly by means of the head 27, the operator steps on the lever 47, which causes the die-holder 42 to ascend and the bending-dies 43 to bend the tongues 9 up tightly against the inner faces of the stove-sides 1 and 2. Upon releasing the levers 24 and 47, the springs 41 and 49 return the heads 27 and 42 to their idle positions (Fig. 1).
I do not desire to be limited to the elements and combinations thereof described, as many changes may be made therein within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A table adapted to contact with the inner walls of a trihedral corner of a hollow body, a clampinghead movable into engagement with a trihedral corner-piece on the said corner, a punch-head insertible between the clamping-head and the table and carried with the clamping-head, dies carried by the punch-head and arranged to punch holes in two of the sides of said body, and means for bending up against the inner walls of the said two sides of the body tongues extending from the corner-piece through the said holes while the said clamping-head is in clamping engagement with the corner-piece.
2. 'A table for supporting a hollow body, a member movable toward and away from the table, a clamp-head carried by the said member and arranged to engage and hold an attachment on the said body, a punching die, a punch-head having travel with the said member supporting the die, and movable to a position between the said member and table to enable the die to punch a hole in the said body, and means for bending up against the inner surface of the said body a tongue projecting from the said attachment and through the said hole.
3. A table for supporting a hollow body and an attachment thereon, a clamping-head for clamping the body and attachment to the table, a punching device for punching a hole in the body while on the table, the said punching device working in the path of the clamping head but removable therefrom, and means for bending a tongue extending from the attachment through the said hole while the clamping-head is in engagement with the attachment.
