Be it known that I, Roiinirr lV. VAIL, a. citizenv of the United States, residing at New York, in the county 'of New York and State of New York, have invented new and usei'ul Improvements in Burglar-Alarm Systems, of which the following. is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide certain improvements upon the burglar alarm system disclosed in my latent No. 1,238,363 of August 2S, 1917, of which this is in part a continuation` and which relates to the protection ot banks, residences, vaults, etc., against robbery, and which` is also designed to prevent the escape ot convicts through windows, walls or doors of prisons, and which is arranged to sound an. alarm whenever the system is .tampered with in any way, or an attempt to escape past windows or doors protected by the system is made.
It is an especial object of my invention to provide a novel plate having a series of channels through which an endless traveling element passes; to arrange such channels through hinges of doors or shutters; to provide bars having similar channels; to provide other elements, such-as bent-plates, .pulleys and screws ete., with oriices through which an endless cable may travel to ncrease. the security of the burglar alarm system, without interfering with the functions ot' the various members through which it travels.
lt is further my object to coordinate such an alarm system with clocks which may be adjusted to prevent the sounding or' the alarm at predetermined times.
lt is tui-ther my object to diversify the arrangement o endless chains and endless cables and to arrange them. in a connected series. thatA is, with two or more individual endless chains or cables operatively connected together, one ot' the endless chains or cables not being directly connected with the propelling apparatus, but caused to be actuated by the action ot' the tirsteiidless element and a connecting medium to permit of a more diversified arrangement ot' the burglar alarm system, and to make it impossible V to tamper with it withoutv sounding` the alarm.
lt isifurther my object to provide a 'novel arrangement of chains as a part ot the burglar alarm system. It is also my object tol use a series of individual endless elements proyedl arrangement ot individual endless chains iii series in order that thev chains when worn may be readily replaced and maybe readily assembled.

It is also my object to provide a protective plate made or arranged in sections which may be used collectively or individually and in correlation with the easements set `forth in my Patent N o. 1,238,363.
Further, my object is toprovide anovel pronged device arranged adjacent to the endless traveling chain to cause its stoppage in the event of an slack occurring in it, as a result of tampering with the apparatus.
It is further my object to provide novel time regulating apparatus for controlling, stopping, or starting the operation of the system at predetermined hours.
It is further my object to provide novel combinationl and arrangement of parts as will hereinafter be fully set forth with the accompanying drawings illustrating the in vention, in which:

In Fig; 10 there is `illustrated a novel .means of protecting a window by my system by utilizing bars 28 having apertures 29 through which the endless cable 1 travels. Bars 28 are secured tot the window Vsash `or frame by means of fillets 31. The
`U-shaped form of the frame 30 is illustrated in Fig. ll.

It is within the contemplation of my. invention to provide these screws with longitudinal channels and to carry the endless cable through them if desired.
In Figs. 15, 16, 17, and 18 is inustrated the locking block 37 within which the combining locking block'39 is positioned both of .these blocks'being provided with` suitable channels for the endless traveling element or elements.' An endless chain 38 mounted on .a sprocketwheel 9 may constitute one of the endless traveling elements.

Fig. 27 illustrates in detail the novel rotatabledisk l50 which is provided with apertures 52 and which is normally held in the position shown by means of spring 127 to permit of the completing of an electric circuit and the sounding of analarmwhen the governor weightdrops as a result of an interruption of the usualoperation of the travcling` cable.
Disk 50 is rotatably mounted on the stationary disk 51. Attached to the rotatable disk 50Ais a line 72, secured to the taut cable 49, which in turn is connected with. a clock 45. Line 72 is guided over roller 130 as shown in Figs. 27 and 30.
In Fig. 28 the function of rotatable insulated disk 50 is clearly shown. When the4 governor weights 64, shown in Fig. 31, lower. the pivot arms 59, revoluble governor disk to which they are attached and the vertical movable plate 57 are lowered by arms 58, and guided in grooves 54, by governor frame A55 the contact points 128 carried by plate 57 will pass through the apertures52 in the insulated disk 50 to make the electric contact 'in the usual way with corresponding contact posts v56. But when disk 50 is rotated by clock 45 .the aiarm mechanism of which is set for any predetermined time so as to close the apertures 129 in the stationary disk 5l, the electric cont-act points v128 are prevented from' making contact with contact posts 56 and the alarm is prevented from sounding until th'e disk v50 is released and allowed to rotate to its normal position by the release of tension on cable 49 by clock 45. 61 designates the central guide post of the ygovernor frame. Fig. 30 is a side elevational view of the mechanism shown in Fig. 28.
In Fig. 29 I have illustrated diagrammatically a suitable switch 62 arranged to engage the stationary cable 49 and also a spring 63 which may be employed to cause the cable 49 t0 return to its normal position when released by switch 62.
Fig. 29 discloses an automatic clock device connected with electric motor 62 to stop motor by disconnectin the current at any predetermined time' w en the alarm clock mechanism (of ordinary type) is set to turn winding wheel 48 (see *ig 25) causing lever a@ of switch 62 to be drawn toward clock 45 to stop motor and simultaneously stopping the travel of the endless element 1.

Fig. 31 isa diagrammatic view of an arrangement ot governors in series, the iirst of the governing mechanisms being designated as A; the second as B, and theA third in the series as C. In connection withthis series arrangement otgovernors l provide stationary cable 49 mounted on rollers 48 and secured by spring 63 to fastening D. Lines T2",operatively connect the several governor mechanisms with stationary cable 49 which in turn is connected with a clock 45. `Clock 45 is connected by auxiliary stationary cable 73 with removable pin 66. Pin 6G is releasably inserted through block 67 into the vertically. slidable plate 69. As shown in Fig.' 33, plate 69 is an intermediate plate provided with apertures 68 which permit of longitudinal sliding movement ot plate 69 when pin 66 is withdrawn. The dropping or lowering o'f plate 69 gives slack to cable72 and thus to member 84 and endlessl cable 1, thereby obviating the sounding ot the alarm bell p, at the time or" opening in the morning` the office or building in which the system is installed, when the nor- `mal operation of the alarm by the opening of the ydoor by the proprietor or employee would be a source oi" annoyance. The Weight ot' plate 67 is such that it does not act to sound alarm 651.
Bell 65P corresponds in function with bell 118 of applicants Patent No. 1.238363, and may be either a conventional mechanical bell (as shown in Fig. 31B) or a conventional electric bell (as shown in Fig. 31A). Alarm bell 65W. 65X, G5Y, and G5Z are conventional electric bells, as in a'pplicants .Patent No. 1,238,363, andare suitably Wired to battery 71, and areI sounded when any of the parallel strands of "the traveling element 1 are tamperedwvith or pushed out oftheir line direction'iof travel.
Referring to Fig. .3land 31B, cable 7 2 is attached to a gong-sounding member 600, which either releases av mechanically .sounded alarm bell, as in Fig. 31B. or closes thecircuit ot a conventional electric alarm bell, as inv Fig. 31A.'V Any suitable electrical or mechanical gong may be utilized. Alarm bell 65X, 65", 652, and 65.V are the ordinary conventional type ot electric bell or gong, andthe complete circuits are disclosed in Fig. 3l ot the drawings.

In Fig. 34, door 74 which is protected by my alarm mechanism, is provided with a novel channeled hinge 75, through which cablel travels, thus rendering it impossible to remove the door without sounding the alarm.
Fig. 35 illustrates means for operating a combined endless cable and endless chain as a protective device `tor a window or a Wall. l provide suitable adjustable frames torsupporting rollers 2 and sprocket Wheels v9. I also provide a hollow axle 7 9 for roller 2 and sprocket wheel 9. This axle affords a passage for auxiliary cable l, thus rendering it impossible to alter the mechanism with'- out sounding the alarm.
' To facilitate adjustment of frame 76 I provide slots arranged in the Jform of a cross to permit of adjustment either longitudinally or laterally.
Fig. 3G illustrates beveled gears 181 and their'arrangement for operating chain 38 so as to protect a door or Window.
Fig. 37 illustrates a means 'for connecting the endless chain 38 with the spindle 61 of governor trame 55, consisting of a combined sprocket wheel and gear 80 meshing with pinion 81, which latter member is carried by post oi spindle 61. The sprocket teeth-otl member 80 mesh. with chain 38, the gear .80 being driven by the endless chain.
Fig. 38 illustrates a governor operated alarm including a visible alarm and a det- .onating alarm device.
'The detonating alarm consists of a percussion cap 8T mounted in the barrel 88, the percussion cap being detonated by spring actuated hammer 86 which is released by trigger 85 when the extended arm 84 carried by the vertically movable member 57 of the governor is lowered following` an interference with the endless traveling element which normally results from any tampering with the system. The governor Weights 64 are pivotally attached to the stationary plate 125 by arms `124. YVeights 64 are also pivotally .connected with the vertically movable member 57 by the arms 59. The visible alarm device isl operated by means of an insulated member 83 carried by a vertically movable governor plate 57. Member 83 is adapted tov make or break the electric circuit between one of the electricv socket of lamp 91 to complete the electric- Circuit. Lamp 91-is provided with a darkened or reiiector' portion 92, whereby an in- .termittently flashing light is obtained which cannot `tail to attract attention when the alarm is operated. Member ,80 may oper-4 atively engage cable 1, as illustrated, as well as chain 38. Cable 1 maybe `operatively connected to compensating weights 82.
F ig. 39 which is an enlarged and reversed View of door 7 4 illustrates means for providing slack to enable authorized persons to enter without sounding the alarm. This result is attained by giving slack to cables 96 which are normally secured by rings to suitable hooks 99, this vmechanism being contained within a` suitable case locked when desired.
Figs. 40, 41.` 42, 43, 44, 45, and 46, illus trate details of a vault to which my protec tive alarm system is applied. Fig. 40 shows one means of mounting rollers 2. Fig.

j Fig. 41 illustrates means for mounting the casements which contain the rollers and sprocket wheels for the endless traveling elements.
The protective plates of vault are provided with flanges 100, which are suitably fixed to central vault frames 101. Figs. 42
and 43 illustrate` a 'protected compartment of the' vault. Fig. 44 shows a modified form oi vault. wall. Fig. 46 illustrates the squareshaped supports101 which are fastened to projections 100 of vault walls 103, this being my preferred form of vault construction. Fig. 47 shows the front plate of the vault and the disposition' of the traveling element. Fig. 48 illustrates an entanglement 'box 104 having inwardly projecting prongs adapted to engage and stop the traveling element inthe event that there is slack as the resultyof tampering or interfering with its usual operation. This entanglement box 104 isespccially ,designed for use where an endless cliain is employed as thetravcling element."

It is lto be understood that I may modify the invention by arranging any of the mechanisms describedin series instead of usingthem singly, and that it is within the contemplation of my invention to modify the shape, position, and number of parts lused foror in connection'with an opening or other portion of a structure to be protected, as I mayelect.
It is also to be understood that it is within the contemplation of my invention to combine the use of an endless chain with an endless cable to increase the Vdifficulties of successful tampering with the svstem.
The words protective platevas used in the claims are to be construed as applying to a plate of any material, whether glass, metal or otherwise, and to a plate of any desired shape used for protective purposes in connection with an endless traveling element. The term protective member7 is to be construed asapplied to walls` plates, bars, rods and pipes. n
That I claim is: f
1. In a burglar alarm system. the combination of an endless traveling element and a securing member having a channel through which the endless traveling element passes.
2. In a burglar alarm'system the combination of one or more protective plates arranged to protect a given portion of a structure, the plates having channels, and endless traveling `elements passing through the aforesaid channels. f
3. In a burglar alarm system the combination of a protective member arranged to protect a portion of a structure and having transversely disposed channels and one or more traveling elements passing through the aforesaid channels.
4. In a burglar alarm system a protective device comprising aV member supporting a shaped in cross section and positioned Within the first named member, the `members having alined channels and one or more endless traveling elements passing through `the aforesaid channels..
5. In a burglar alarm system a.protective device comprising a member supporting a locking'block, a locking block member U- shaped in cross section and positioned Within'the first named member, the membersl having alined channels, one or more endless traveling elements passing through the aforesaid Channels, and vlocking blo'ck fastening'means. v
